Mobile Phone Roaming Charges to Drop

The cost of making and receiving calls overseas are set to drop from July 2012.

The European Union have set a cap on prices for roaming in the EU. This will be a welcome to those mobile phone users who have been ripped-off by the atrocious network charges that exist for roaming overseas.

Charged from July are: 24p minute to mae a call, 7p minute to receive a call and 8p to send a SMS message and 58p for data usage. The networks will certainly not like this when some charge up to and over a £1 for incoming calls and a text message can cost up to 36p or more depending on where you are in the world.

Unfortunately there is no such cap for world-wide roaming.

It is now left down to the networks to see how they will attempt to recoup the costs and of course, attempts will be made, do not be left in doubt about that.

T-Mobile and Orange have already increased charges at the beginning of 2012. It remains to be seen whether other networks will increase charges following this news.

“EU rapporteur and MEP Angelika Niebler said: “Parliament has succeeded in its call for cheaper roaming prices for consumers, and in particular for data roaming.

“In addition, from July 2014, consumers will be able to choose an operator other than their national operator for roaming services. The new rules will also help to open up the market to new entrants and so increase competition.”

Nokia Lumia 900 Heads to Phones4u

Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone device, the Lumia 900 has finally made its long awaited debut in the UK, courtesy of retailer Phones4u who have gained an exclusive on the device until May 27th. Phones4u are also offering a free Nokia Purity HD headset to anyone who orders before May 31st.

Featuring a 4.3 inch AMOLED display, the Lumia 900 is powered by a 1.4 GHz single-core CPU and ships with the Tango update of Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. The US version of the device was announced back at CES in January and released in the US in early April, but increased demand for the device in the US led to a delay in the release date for the UK non-LTE version.

LG Optimus L7 Available Today

LG Optimus L7

The LG Optimus L7 features a 4.3 inch display and runs on a angle-core 1GHz processor. The smartphone comes equipped with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The L7 will be available on pay as you go from Phones4U. Phones4U is has the L7 in white on offer. They have been doing very well as a network, often taking in the exclusive orders for white variants of smartphones. The price SIM-free is £329 but on pay as you go attached to one of the networks, the cost comes down to £299.

The L7 is a great device and fits well into the market. It uses a single core 1GHz processor which is quite some distance from the quad-core 1.4GHz that ships in Samsung’s new Galaxy S3.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was announced a few days ago. The L7 carries with it a 5 megapixel camera and at 8.7mm is it thinner than the Galaxy S3.

Phones4U to show Samsung Galaxy SIII launch live in store

Phones4U’s London Oxford Street store will be broadcasting a live stream of the Samsung Galaxy SIII launch tomorrow evening the retailer has announced.

The event will be broadcast on big screens at the store on 112-114 Oxford Street, which also features Samsung co-branding. Viewers will be treated to complementary food and drink and could also snap up a free Samsung Galaxy Note in a giveaway competition.

If you’re unable to get down to the store and aren’t attending the event then don’t forget, UKMobileReview will be live from Samsung Unpacked 2012 so stay tuned!

Now this is a bargain for what is still quite a good smartphone.

The iPhone 4 8GB has technically only been out for about 6 months (the 8GB variant was launched at the same time as the iPhone 4S, but the 16GB and 32GB versions were launched the year before) and is now available for free on a 12 month contract at £36 per month from Phones4u. The device used to cost £279 upfront, but this is now down to zero for a limited time.

The contract, with the network supplied by Vodafone comes to a total of just £432 over 12 months, which is just £3 more than Apple who sell the device sim-free for a whopping £429. What does your money get you? 300 minutes, Unlimited texts and 500MB mobile data per month.

The iPhone 4 still features a pretty stellar specs list, especially with the Retina Display (960 x 640 pixels), single-core Cortex A4 processor, 512MB RAM and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

Nokia Lumia 900 Release Date Announced for Phones 4U

We posted earlier about the delay of the launch for the Nokia Lumia 900. There was a preliminary date set for 4 May. We now have updated information on the release date for the Nokia Lumia 900.

Today, Phones4U have confirmed that they will be stocking the Nokia Lumia 900 as of 14 May 2012.

Phones4U will be selling the devices in both the black and the white. It is not known yet whether they have exclusivity on the white addition. They are known for their exclusivity of white smartphones when they are initially released on to the market.

Those customers who pre-ordered prior to 16 April will receive Purity in-ear headphones along with a Nokia Play 360 Wireless Speaker free as a gift or early purchase and also because of the delays sales time.

Nokia Lumia 900 UK release date delayed

Loyal readers of UKMobileReview will have read that Nokia’s Lumia 900 had gone up for pre-order in the UK with an April 27th release date through retailer Phones4u. Phones4u had announced that they had an exclusive on the white variant of the Lumia 900 and were expecting both to go on sale at the end of this month.

Those looking forward to the device will be disappointed to know that Phones4u have pushed back the release date of the Lumia 900, now expecting the device to be in stock from 14th May, almost three weeks away! The upside of the delay is that it’ll give you longer to pre-order and get a free Nokia Play 360 Wireless Speaker, which is worth £120.

Featuring a 4.3 inch AMOLED display of 480×800 pixels resolution and Nokia ClearBlack Display, the Lumia 900 packs a powerful punch with a 1.4GHz single-core Scorpion powering the Windows Phone OS. Other features of the device include 720p HD video capture, 16GB storage, 512MB RAM and a front-facing camera.

Nokia Lumia 900 heads up for UK pre order

Nokia’s latest flagship Windows Phone device, the Lumia 900 has gone up for UK pre order ahead of its imminent UK release date.

The Lumia 900, which sports LTE support in the US courtesy of network partner AT&T, features a 4.3 inch AMOLED display, Windows Phone OS and 8 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. The US version of the Lumia 900 was announced back in January and launched yesterday, whilst the international version of the Lumia 900, was made official back at MWC in February and will launch in the UK from April 27th.

The device is available from Phones4u, who are offering it free on pay monthly contracts starting from £36 per month and will be available in White exclusively (see our hands on) from Phones4U.

HTC One X, HTC One S launched in the UK

It’s pretty much been expected since most networks confirmed they would have it today, but HTC’s latest One Series has launched in the UK with the One X and One S available to purchase today.

We’ve already covered all the deals in our pre-order round-up post, but some other ones to watch out for is O2′s launch offer on the One S and super pricing on the One X.

The HTC One X features a 1.5GHz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 “4-PLUS-1″ CPU which powers the 4.7 inch SLCD2 720p HD display. The HTC One S on the other hand sacrifices the quad-core processor for a 1.5GHz dual-core Krait CPU which powers the 4.3 inch Super AMOLED display (540 x 960 pixels).

Both devices feature 1GB RAM under the hood, an 8MP rear camera with HTC’s Sense imaging chip and the ability to snap picture in just 0.2 seconds from the lock screen. Both devices also have the capability to snap hi-res photos and record 1080p HD video simultaneously. Both devices run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC’s Sense UI v4 on top.

HTC One X and HTC One S available at Phones4u

An impromptu stop at my local Phones4U offered some very nice surprises.

Following hot on the heals of Three UK’s announcement that the HTC One X and HTC One S being available from tomorrow on the Three network.

We can confirm that both the HTC One X and the HTC One S will be available on Phones4U from tomorrow. We can also confirm that Phones4U already has the smartphones in stock and in the shop. They have stocks of the HTC One X in the Black and the White and the HTC One S available in White. Further stocks should see Phones4U stocking the Black One S. However, Phones4U have had exclusive ‘White’ stock on many smartphones and it may decide to stick with the white only version for the One S depending on its popularity.

Prices are already listed on the website for the HTC One S free on contract from £31 and HTC One X free on contract from £36. (Other deals are available which involve lower monthly tariffs but a payment upfront for the handset).

The HTC One X is also available offline for £499.95

Phones4u end HTC One X, One S Free Media Link HD offer

Regular readers of UKMR will have read that Phones4u were offering a free MediaLink HD with all HTC One X and HTC One S pre-orders.

However, it seems that with the release date just a few days away now, Phones4u (and subsidiary Dial-A-Phone) have closed the promotion, with all tariffs now standard offerings and not with the free accessory.

Samsung Opens New Store in London

Samsung has today opened a new ~~Apple~~ store in London’s Oxford Street. Samsung’s new store takes its cue from Apple’s store in London with its clean lines, similar to that found in Apple Stores.

The new Samsung store has its home within Phones4U taking over the first floor of the building.

On display are a range of Samsung’s most popular products including the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S II. Staff are undergoing training to make sure that they are well-formed about Samsung products to aid customers. Reminiscent of Apple stores, the products are laid out on simple designed tables with easy access for customers to try out the host of products on sale.

Apple has been celebrated as one of the no1 retail shoppers experience worldwide and the retail designer for the Apple shops, Ron Johnson, has already been plucked from Apple for his experience in producing The Instore Experience.

HTC One X, One S and One V to launch next week

HTC have announced that all three One Series devices, the One X, One S and One V are to launch in Central Europe next week.

The One X will cost €599, whilst the One S comes in at €499 and the One V will come in at €299.

We went hands on with the One X and One S at Mobile World Congress last month, where the devices were announced. Featuring Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC Sense UI 4.0 as standard across the range, the One Series is definitely impressive.

All three devices will launch in Europe on April 2nd; we already know of pre-orders for the One X and the One S in the UK, with most retailers getting the devices next week.

UK telco retail stores to extend Sunday hours during the Olympics

UK telecommunications retailers and network stores could extend Sunday opening hours during the Olympics after Chancellor George Osborne announced a nationwide suspension to Sunday trading laws during the Games.

Retail store working in London and near to the Olympics site have backed proposals for longer working hours, as it would inevitably lead to overtime pay and increased commissions.

Mobile News Online report speaking with several retail staff whom are happy to work extended hours on a Sunday during the Olympics.

It is bound to be a good move for all retailers as thousands of people will be in and around London on those days and business will most definitely be booming.

The device is currently available through Phones4u retail stores and online. The device costs £79.95 on pay as you go but is available from £59.95 with a pay as you go upgrade.

White Nokia Lumia 800 now available in the UK

Back at the beginning of February, Nokia announced the White Lumia 800, and the device has now been made available for purchase in the UK courtesy of Phones4u.

Phones4u have an exclusive on the device for the near future and are offering the White 800 for purchase on pay monthly contracts starting at £20.50 per month.

Phones4u have made the White Motorola RAZR available to pre-order with the device becoming available from March 1st.

The device will be sold free on contracts starting at £21.50 per month, which is a great price given the RAZR’s impressive specs list. A dual-core 1.2GHz processor alongside a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Gorilla Glass display and Android 2.3.5 make the RAZR an attractive proposition for the low monthly price.

Phones4u loses Head of Social Media

Phones4u’s Head of Social had taken the decision to exit his role with the company. Jeremy Waite joined the retailer a year ago with a focus on marketing through social media platforms such as FaceBook and Twitter.

Waite’s previous roles include as a social media consulting, working with companies such as Unilever, Centrica, MTV and Reebok.

During his tenure with Phones4U, the company moved social media from the marketing division to ecommerce and it’s unclear whether this influenced his decision to leave the company.

Nokia Asha 201 launches for £45

The Nokia Asha 201,announced at Nokia World in October last year, has made a surprise debut in the UK market with a super cheap price tag.

The device has landed on the sunny British shores courtesy of retailer Phones4u and network Vodafone.

Phones4U are offering the device on Pay as You Go with O2, Orange or Vodafone as your network and are charging £59.95 for the device, when bought with a mandatory £10/£20 topup.

Vodafone however, have secured an exclusive for the White Asha 201 and will be offering it for the bargain price of just £45 when bought with £10 topup.

The Asha 201 should definitely appeal to its target market with the 2MP rear camera, Symbian OS and BlackBerry styled portrait QWERTY keyboard certain to appeal given its price point.

White Nokia Lumia 800 set for March 6th UK release?

We know that Phones4u have begun pre-orders for the White Nokia Lumia 800, which the retailer claims is exclusive to them but whilst we’re certain it was going to land in March, it was unclear exactly when.

According to a tip received by ESPhoneBlog.com, the device will be in stock from March 6th onwards.

It is available for purchase on pay monthly contracts from just £20.50 per month on a 24 month contract.

White Nokia Lumia 800 set for March release through Phones4u

Phones4u has put up a pre-order page for the White Nokia Lumia 800, which Nokia outed a few days ago.

The independent retailer, second only to Carphone Warehouse, has announced that the White Lumia 800 will be headed to its shelves in time for a March release, and will be available free on pay monthly contracts starting at just £20.50.

Nokia says:

“Now in white, the Lumia 800 brings with it a more premium look and feel with its gloss finish, and is packed with power and performance underneath its sleek body.”

White Nokia Lumia 800 is also set to get a white wash (pun intended) on the UI, with exclusive white themes, wallpapers and skins alongside pre-loaded music tracks from artists such as The White Stripes.

Samsung announced a competition for new purchasers of their Galaxy range. Hosted by Tulisa Contostavious of N-Dubz and X-factor fame, new customers of Samsung Galaxy II, Samsung Galaxy Note or Galaxy Nexus will be entered into the competition. The prizes include the chance to shoot a music video with Tulisa.

BlackBerry RIM: Sold! ‘one’ BlackBerry Bold 9900

Manufacturers have been quick to dampen speculation that they are not interested in RIM or that they will make any offers on BlackBerry RIM. However, although Research in Motion have lost shares there can be no denying that their email enterprise remains the one to beat. In addition, the keypad evolution on the BlackBerry is second to none. It is enough to say that my latest purchase is the BlackBerry Bold 9900, on which I am writing this article. I have for sometime looked for a way to ‘blog on the go’ and the Apple iPad could not give me what I required, and that is a tactile keyboard that allows me to write on the go, quickly efficiently and extensively.

Although it may seem senseless to you, I can honestly say that the purchase of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is worth it for the joy of the keypad alone. Carphone Warehouse unfortunately advertise the white 9900 but do not stock it and I was directed to Phones4u who had the white in stock and very kindly got me up and running on my preferred network Vodafone.

A friend told me “if you want to be productive on the move, get a BlackBerry’. I am already seeing the clarity of his message.

Phones4u reveal BlackBerry Bold 9790 contract pricing

RIM’s successor to the BlackBerry Bold 9700 series, the Bold 9790, has appeared online at retailer Phones4u’s website.

Sporting a full QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen, the Bold 9790 is a more compact-version of its bigger brother, the Bold 9900 and will be available for free on contracts from £21.50 per month.

Delivery is expected to be January 30th and Phones4u will join O2, Orange and Vodafone in stocking the device, which has to live up to the success of its predecessor.

Phones4u will give you multiple network operators to choose from, including Vodafone, Orange and O2.

LG’s latest flagship offering, the Prada 3.0, has hit Phones4u’s shelves, with a contract offering from a very competitive £31 per month with Vodafone or Orange as your network provider.

The highlight deal costs £31 per month on a two-year contract with 900 minutes, 3000 texts and 500MB of monthly data and a free device.

Need less minutes? A slightly cheaper plan is available, with the device costing £89 upfront; the plan offers 100 minutes, 500 texts and 250MB mobile data for £26 per month over two years.

Phones4u have posted a video overview of the new Sony Xperia S. Coming to the retailer in White as an exclusive, they look over the camera, design and sharing capabilities of Sony’s new device.

The Xperia S features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor alongside the 4.3 inch Reality Display. The display is capable of 720p HD resolution, and also features Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA Engine. Other notable specs include a 12MP camera with Exmor R sensor, 1080p HD video capture and a 1.3MP front-facing camera capable of shooting 720p HD video. The Xperia S should be launched in March; an exact release date and pricing are not currently available.

Phones4u get White Sony Xperia S UK exclusive

Phones4u have joined O2 and Three in announcing plans to stock the Sony Xperia S smartphone later this year.

Announced earlier today as CES 2012, Sony’s new handset is similar to its brother, the Xperia Ion, and features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor alongside a 4.3 inch Reality Display capable of displaying (720 x 1280 pixels) HD resolution. Other notable features include 32GB internal memory, 1GB RAM, 12MP Exmor R camera with Mobile BRAVIA Engine and NFC support. Sony have also include a market-leading 1.3MP front-facing video camera, capable of recording video is 720p HD Ready resolution.

Phones4u have announced that they will be stocking both the White and Black variants of the device, with the White variant set to be exclusive to them. Pricing and availability is unknown but it shouldn’t be more than a few months before the device is released.

Phones4u to head to America?

Phones4u is rumoured to be setting its sights on the US phone market, just as rival retailer Carphone Warehouse has just sold its stake in the joint venture with Best Buy in the U.S..

Phones4u is well experienced in operating both retail stores and concessional stores, through its large retail stores network and partnership with DSGi (owners of Currys and PC World) leading to Phones4u concessions in those stores.

Having travelled to a few countries on different continents, the one thing I’ve found personally is that there is a lack of specialist mobile phone chains. A move by Phones4u across the pond would certainly be brave by current economic standards but the brand has the knowledge and track record to crack the U.S. market and become the go-to destination for mobile phones.

The world’s first Playstation certified mobile phone, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, has dropped the low price of £130 on pay as you go.

The deal is available instore only and is for Orange and T-Mobile customers, more details available here.

The device itself is unlocked and ships with a 16GB microSD card alongside an additional four game downloads on top of the six pre-installed games.

The Xperia Play offers a real investment at the low £130 price, and features a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512MB RAM, 16GB on-board storage, 4-inch 854 x 480 pixel display, Playstation style slide out controller and a five megapixel camera. Phones4u stores gain Wi-Fi Cloud connection

UK public WiFi access provider The Cloud has struck a deal with major high street retailer Phones4u which will see the retailer’s stores nationwide gain WiFi hotspots.

The deal will boost The Cloud’s retail footprint by around 10 percent and the WiFi will be available free of charge to Phones4u purchasers in-store. The move comes after Phones4u began a promotional campaign to offer its customers three months free WiFi with every device purchased.

The WiFi will also allow Phones4u staff to demo web content on smartphones as well as allow customers to browse the web on their current mobile device. Phones4u is also planning to use the WiFi service to deliver in-store marketing to WiFi users.

Phones 4U offers free Wi-Fi on all purchases

Retailer offers three months free Wi-Fi as a promotion on all purchases starting November 16th.

Phones4u have unveiled one of their Christmas promotions; three-months free WiFi through the Cloud and BTOpenzone wireless hotspots. The Wi-Fi access will come with a 1GB fair use policy per month and will be available to all devices purchased on contracts or with £10 topup on pay as you go.

The promotion will run until Christmas Eve, and once the customer’s Wi-Fi promotion has come to an end, the access will cost £2.99 per month.

Phones4u Director of Customer Development, Alistair Firth, said:

“We recognised that our smartphone customers want to be able to utilise the full capability of their handset without having to worry about their network data allowance.
