The 4G spectrum is still some way in the distance for the UK with the new 4G spectrum not due until 2012.

However, O2 is not to be held back and has begun the roll out of DC_HSPA. DC_HSPA (dal-cell high-speed packet access) is not 4G but appears to be an improvement over the present 3G connectivity. The new service may see download speeds double in some areas.

O2 spokeman had this to say: ‘major UK cities’ will be the first to benefit from the roll out, with London, Manchester and Birmingham being the likely candidates.

To-date the new iPad and Nokia European Lumia 900 supports DC-HSPA.

Three, and the Everything Everywhere collaboration between Orange and T-Mobile aims to join the DC_HSPA roll our later this year. Vodafone as yet have no plans for the service.

T-Mobile USA is planning to restructure the company, leading to job cuts according to a leaked email by CEO Philipp Humm. The email doesn’t go into specifics, but Humm says that some “difficult decisions” would be made in the next few days.

We’ll find out the rest of the details when the company divulges them over the next few days. Here’s the leaked email in full:

Dear colleagues,

Since the beginning of the year, T-Mobile has stressed that 2012 is a rebuilding year for the company. A vital step in that process was announced in March with the consolidation of our call centers. This week, T-Mobile is taking the second essential step. We are announcing a new structure that further aligns our costs with our revenue realities, enables teams who support our field organization to act and react with greater speed and effectiveness to customer and market opportunities, and better positions us to return to growth.

The new organization required difficult decisions that will impact some of our employees. This week, news will be shared personally with employees and teams who are directly affected by the restructuring. Changes will include some position eliminations and changes to individual roles and responsibilities. It is important to emphasize these impacts to employees result from business decisions. We have tremendous employees here at T-Mobile and we truly wish we could retain all our talent, but our business realities require hard choices. For affected team members, we are providing generous transition support including severance, assistance with COBRA continuation coverage, and outplacement services. As mentioned in the March announcement, customer service representatives in the remaining 17 call centers, technicians in engineering, and frontline employees in our T-Mobile corporate-owned stores will not be affected.

Our rebuilt structure enables T-Mobile to realize significant savings, allowing us to invest in future growth — in particular modernizing our network to LTE, repositioning the T-Mobile brand, and aggressively pursuing the B2B segment where we plan to add 1,000 positions over the next few years. We gain the agility to put resources where the current opportunities are, grow in areas where potential is greatest, and act on emerging opportunities quickly and rationally.

The restructuring provides a sustainable organizational model, centered on our T-Mobile Values, with the following attributes:

A greater focus on driving Customer Delight by reducing the layers between working teams and executive leadership, and shifting and consolidating groups in the field sales regions and the FSC to minimize redundant work — resulting in more effective coordination and communication.

A renewed emphasis on Best Place to Perform and Grow: Enhanced people manager spans of control (number of direct reports), enabling faster decisions, more ability to execute, and more empowerment of employees at all levels.
Evolution of our leadership model from player-coach, where more time is spent on daily tasks than on planning and guiding, to leader-coach, where time is focused more strategically on coaching, developing, delegating, and motivating.

We approached the restructuring process and decisions with care, rigor and cross-functional alignment. A team comprised of top leaders, with support from industry-leading subject matter experts, worked closely together over the past few months to develop an effective and sustainable structure. We strongly believe the organizational principles we applied are lasting ones. More details on the new organizational structure will be shared in department and team communications this week and more broadly after that.

I want to assure you we will move through the communications this week very thoughtfully, but also as quickly as we can while preserving the quality of the conversations that need to happen. As always, our T-Mobile Values will guide our actions.

Thank you for your patience as we work through what will be a difficult week. Thank you for your continued commitment.

With sincere appreciation,

Philipp Humm CEO & President
T-Mobile USA

O2 is changing their Priority Moments rewards scheme as it looks to hand partial control over to their customers. The latest update to the scheme finds the network asking customers for feedback on the companies they’d like special offers from.

Previously, O2 customers had to “make do” with offers from companies selected by O2 but now, O2′s customers can suggest brands by tweeting the company using the hash tag #o2prioritymoments or posting on the O2 Facebook page. O2 will take the suggestions and then approach the companies most popular with customers.

Priority Moments is available to download from the iOS App Store and Google Play Store and can also be accessed from the company’s WAP-enabled mobile website. The app is also available on RIM’s BlackBerry devices and all you need to access the app is text ‘MOMENTS’ to 2020.

What’s your thoughts on O2′s new Priority Moments? Has the app saved you money? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Huawei is back in the UK with two further entry-level smartphones, the Ascend Y100 and the G7105, which will both launch as exclusive to network operator O2.

Whilst not as good as the Huawei Ascend G300, which is exclusive to Vodafone, the two devices reaffirm the Chinese company’s commitment to the low-end market whilst their flagship Ascend D-Quad smartphone, which is set to launch in the UK later this year, will target the high-end market for the company.

The Huawei Ascend Y100 features a 2.8 inch touchscreen display with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and a 2 megapixel camera, which Huawei say supports video recording at 30 frames per second, the only device in this price range to do so. The Ascend Y100 will launch on June 1st for £79.99 on PAYG or free from £10 per month on pay monthly contracts.

The Huawei G7105 takes the company back to their feature phone roots, offering very little other than a 2.8 inch LCD display and 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom. The G7105 does not feature WiFi connectivity, but ships with Opera Mini, which should reduce the data usage whilst speeding up page load times. The G7105 is available now for £39.99 in white.

Verizon Wireless has expanded its 4G LTE network for the second time in as many months, bringing the next-generation mobile network to 27 more areas.

The expansion kicks off on May 17th and the new areas covered include Jersey Shore, Monmouth Beath, Atlantic City, Toms River and a lot more.

Verizon has aspirations to bring 4G LTE to all over the US, so if you’re not covered yet then rest assured it won’t be long before Big Red gets round to updating your area.

Full press release below.

Just In Time For Summer Verizon Wireless Bringing The Power Of Its 4G LTE Network To Jersey Shore May 17

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Verizon Wireless today announced that just in time for the busy summer season, it is bringing the nation’s largest 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to a large portion of the Jersey Shore May 17. With the 4G LTE network, customers can use 4G LTE wireless devices to access the Internet faster, listen to music or watch video, take advantage of thousands of applications, and stay in touch with family and friends, all with speeds up to 10 times faster than before.

When Verizon Wireless turns on its 4G LTE network here, customers who live in, or visit shore points and surrounding communities including Sea Bright, Monmouth Beach, Belmar, Point Pleasant, Toms River, Atlantic City and into Cape May County will have access to the nation’s fastest 4G network.

“The size of our 4G LTE network gives us a significant competitive advantage over competitors as it enables more residents, small businesses and local government to take advantage of the speed and connectivity benefits offered by this advanced technology,” said Verizon Wireless Regional President Mario Turco. “We are committed to continuing the aggressive rollout of our 4G LTE network in 2012.”

4G LTE Devices and Plans

Verizon Wireless customers can choose from a variety of more than 20, 4G LTE-enabled devices, including notebooks and netbooks; hotspots and modems; and smartphones and tablets, including the new LG Lucid™, an easy-to-use smartphone offering 4G LTE speeds at a low price, and the soon to be launched DROID Incredible 4G LTE by HTC, which will allow users to shoot HD video and capture photos at the same time with its Video Pic feature, all over the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network.

The company also recently introduced HomeFusion? Broadband, a solution that leverages the power and speed of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network to deliver high-speed, in-home Internet access for residential broadband, particularly in areas where Internet options are limited or are not currently available.

4G LTE Overview

Verizon Wireless introduced the globe’s first large-scale LTE network on December 5, 2010, and currently offers service in 230 markets nationwide, and is on course to deliver 4G LTE to its entire 3G wireless footprint by the end of 2013. The company’s 700 MHz spectrum gives Verizon Wireless specific advantages with 4G, including a contiguous, nationwide network license.

In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink. When customers travel outside a 4G coverage area, their devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless’ 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast.

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network was named “Fastest 4G Network Yet” by Popular Science’s 2011 Best of What’s New Awards, and was ranked No. 1 on PC World’s 100 Best Products of 2011. For more information about Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network, please visit: www.verizonwireless.com/lte.

A mere matter of days after the EU ruling to cap roaming costs, O2 has announced new plans for its roaming network.

O2 will offer travellers 25MB of date for a cost of £1.99. The new package O2 Travel will launch the day when EU roaming caps come into force. It would perhaps be more graceful for them to bring in the offer now as a sign of good will.

O2 had this to say:

O2 marketing and consumer director Sally Cowdry (pictured) said: “We know people want to able to relax and enjoy their holidays without worrying about complicated phone charges.

“With simple charges and a generous 25MB data bundle, O2 Travel provides a great way for our customers to keep in touch and share their holiday moments with family and friends without having to worry about the costs.”

O2 said the decision to offer O2 Travel was influenced by customer research which found that 60 per cent of UK citizens used mobile data while travelling abroad and that mobile data usage while on holiday is doubling each year

The cost of making and receiving calls overseas are set to drop from July 2012.

The European Union have set a cap on prices for roaming in the EU. This will be a welcome to those mobile phone users who have been ripped-off by the atrocious network charges that exist for roaming overseas.

Charged from July are: 24p minute to mae a call, 7p minute to receive a call and 8p to send a SMS message and 58p for data usage. The networks will certainly not like this when some charge up to and over a £1 for incoming calls and a text message can cost up to 36p or more depending on where you are in the world.

Unfortunately there is no such cap for world-wide roaming.

It is now left down to the networks to see how they will attempt to recoup the costs and of course, attempts will be made, do not be left in doubt about that.

T-Mobile and Orange have already increased charges at the beginning of 2012. It remains to be seen whether other networks will increase charges following this news.

“EU rapporteur and MEP Angelika Niebler said: “Parliament has succeeded in its call for cheaper roaming prices for consumers, and in particular for data roaming.

“In addition, from July 2014, consumers will be able to choose an operator other than their national operator for roaming services. The new rules will also help to open up the market to new entrants and so increase competition.”

Today’s best deal comes from T-Mobile. The offer is available in the Carphone Warehouse. The cheapest price point is the Samsung Galaxy Note, white or black, at a fantastic £21 for 24 months. The smartphone handset price is free.

If you were looking for the ideal deal, then this is it. I am not sure if prices will drop lower than it already is but for a top-end smartphone with a fantastic screen size and the functionality inbuilt, this is a deal that should not be missed.

Today the European Union announced plans by the European parliament to cap the cost of mobile roaming. The cap was voted on and will come into effect from July.

Today the European Union announced plans by the European parliament to cap the cost of mobile roaming. The cap will come into effect from July. The new rate sees the cost of calls limited to just 24p per minute whilst texts will cost 7p and data roaming will cost 58p per megabyte. At present, the cost of data roaming can be up to £1 per MB, but some networks have data bundles available, such as Vodafone Data Traveller.

The EU has introduced the new rates as part of a long term plan to bring the cost of EU roaming to similar levels as “home” network costs and the latest reduction in rate will actually benefit customers who roam around Europe.

However, networks rely on roaming revenue and as the cost of EU roaming decreases, we’re likely to see the cost of non-EU roaming rise drastically to offset the lost revenue. Other possibilities include networks increasing the cost of UK usage to offset the lost revenue.

It’s unclear whether any of the networks have launched appeals or referendums to oppose the cap, but either way, it’s become EU law so should be in place from July.

Just walked past the Orange store and all the windows are displaying the network’s latest offer, which sees Sony’s first own-branded device, the Xperia S, available from just £21 per month when bought with Orange Home Broadband.

That’s a total cost of £31 per month, which is great value for a great smartphone (read our review) as well as unlimited home broadband.

This offer follows on from last month, where Orange offered up the HTC One X for £31 per month when upgrading your contract and taking home broadband. Whilst the One X offer was good, the Xperia S offer is brilliant.

Head over to Orange’s website or an Orange store near you now.

Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone device, the Lumia 900 has finally made its long awaited debut in the UK, courtesy of retailer Phones4u who have gained an exclusive on the device until May 27th. Phones4u are also offering a free Nokia Purity HD headset to anyone who orders before May 31st.

Featuring a 4.3 inch AMOLED display, the Lumia 900 is powered by a 1.4 GHz single-core CPU and ships with the Tango update of Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. The US version of the device was announced back at CES in January and released in the US in early April, but increased demand for the device in the US led to a delay in the release date for the UK non-LTE version.

Head over to Phones4u for more info or to buy and if you’re not sure if this is the device for you, why not check out all our hands on and videos here.

O2 in partnership with Costa Coffee is to offer Costa customers free internet. The deal is for unlimited Wi-Fi and you will be allocated 30 minutes free. The Costa offer will involved in 835 Costa Coffee shops across the UK.

O2 said the deal shows its commitment to working closely with the retail industry. The operator is in the process of deploying 3,000 hotspots in the UK, and is working with retailers on services such as Priority Moments and the recently launched O2 Wallet.

O2 Wi-Fi managing director Gavin Franks said: “Coffee shops are seen as the traditional heartland for public access wifi and Costa is the largest coffee chain in the UK.

Costa UK marketing director Kevin Hydes said: “As people spend around half an hour in our stores, we are delighted to be partnering with O2 and providing our customers with 30minutes of free WiFi.

“This is the latest in a series of new partnerships with industry and sector leading brands for O2 Wifi. In 2012, O2 Wifi has already announced an additional 3,000 UK hotspots which are currently being deployed across the UK.”

The LG Optimus L7 features a 4.3 inch display and runs on a angle-core 1GHz processor. The smartphone comes equipped with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The L7 will be available on pay as you go from Phones4U. Phones4U is has the L7 in white on offer. They have been doing very well as a network, often taking in the exclusive orders for white variants of smartphones. The price SIM-free is £329 but on pay as you go attached to one of the networks, the cost comes down to £299.

The L7 is a great device and fits well into the market. It uses a single core 1GHz processor which is quite some distance from the quad-core 1.4GHz that ships in Samsung’s new Galaxy S3.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was announced a few days ago. The L7 carries with it a 5 megapixel camera and at 8.7mm is it thinner than the Galaxy S3.

Intel has developed several new smartphones of late, running on the Android operating system. Last week one of the first devices the Intel Lava Xolo arrived in Asia.

The Orange Santa Clara is expected to arrive in the UK fairly soon and will be Intel’s first Android smartphone to come to the UK.

Orange UK has opened a ‘register your interest’ page on the Orange Santa Clara so we would think that the device will not be too much longer before it arrives on the shelves. Santa Clara is only the pre-launch name and the full name will be announced when the product is launched.

The Intel Medfield has been talked about for some time and it is hoped that it will bring new featured and perhaps capabilities to the new devices.

Orange UK have listed the Nokia Lumia 900 in the support section of their UK website, indicatings the network will launch the Lumia 900 in the near future.

The network has not provided a release date for Nokia’s latest flagship, but given the increased demand for the device in the US, if you want one you will be in for a wait.

O2 has become the first network to confirm that it will not be stocking Nokia’s newest device. The Nokia 808 PureView is capturing hearts and minds with its new PureView camera technology.

Nokia has announced today that its newest smartphone will come to the market this month (May). India and Russia will be the first countries to receive the PureView before markets are opened globally.

The tweet this morning to O2, asked if they would be stocking the Nokia 808 PureView.

Nokia’s newest smartphone will feature a 41 megapixel sensor capable of 38 megapixel images. The device will run on Nokia’s original symbian smartphone platform.

Nokia has been working with Microsoft over the last 12 months and have introduced new Windows Phone to their Lumia range including the Nokia Lumia 800, 900, 710 and 610.

The three other big networks have not yet made a decision on whether they will be stocking the 808 PureView but if you are on the o2 network or had hoped to get the Nokia 808 PureView on contract, an upgrade or payg, it looks like this will not be happening for you at O2.

However, things can change quickly overnight and if the PureView becomes a very popular device, we are sure that O2 will need to look again at their sales options.

Everything Everywhere is calling for business leaders and consumer champions to join their campaign against the slow 4G rollout in the UK. The campaign, called 4GBritain, is aimed at getting the government “to do whatever is necessary to move forward” with the roll-out.”

Everything Everywhere is spearheading the campaign, following the decision by Ofcom to reject the company’s call to allow them to launch 4G services later this year.

A spokeswoman for Everything Everywhere, formed of the merger between Orange and T-Mobile in 2010, said:

“This is a call for attention to be brought to this issue, to stop battling in the background and let us catch up with the other 34 countries that have already launched 4G services,”

Olaf Swantee, Everything Everywhere’s Chief Executive said:

“The UK had struck me as a place where mobile technology is deployed first and yet the infrastructure is behind Germany, Scandinavia and the US. I want to do something about this issue,”

It looks like the fight for 4G isn’t about to slow down any time soon. You can keep up with our 4G coverage through our dedicated portal.

As an owner of the arc S this can only mean good news for me, because where Three goes, other networks should follows – therefore, I am hoping to see updates to my SIM Free very soon.

Head on over to the Three portal to grab your update. I believe this one has to be done via PC and is not available OTA.

Now this is a bargain for what is still quite a good smartphone.

The iPhone 4 8GB has technically only been out for about 6 months (the 8GB variant was launched at the same time as the iPhone 4S, but the 16GB and 32GB versions were launched the year before) and is now available for free on a 12 month contract at £36 per month from Phones4u. The device used to cost £279 upfront, but this is now down to zero for a limited time.

The contract, with the network supplied by Vodafone comes to a total of just £432 over 12 months, which is just £3 more than Apple who sell the device sim-free for a whopping £429. What does your money get you? 300 minutes, Unlimited texts and 500MB mobile data per month.

The iPhone 4 still features a pretty stellar specs list, especially with the Retina Display (960 x 640 pixels), single-core Cortex A4 processor, 512MB RAM and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

Head over to Phones4u to snap up this bargain now.

The latest stage of the joint network rollout means T-Mobile and Orange customer’s handsets will now automatically use the network with the strongest signal.

2010 saw a major change in the UK networks with the launch of Everything Everywhere (EE), the joint venture between Orange and T-Mobile to deliver the UK’s largest network. Since the launch of EE, the two networks have gradually begun to roll out a joint network, originally allowing customers to use the other network’s 2G signal as a backup plan.

Signal Sharing explained

The 2G network sharing was then extended to include 3G network signal sharing back in October last year, but the key problem with both of these sharing agreements was that they were only used in the case of no “home” network signal. Furthermore, this process was non-seamless meaning that customer’s would only be able to benefit when coverage was that poor. An example of this could be when a T-Mobile customer had 1 bar of 2G signal in an area with full Orange 3G signal, the customer’s handset would remain on the T-Mobile network despite the much better signal on Orange.

This “problem” now looks to be resolved with the launch of “Smart Signal Sharing“, which means that a customer’s handset will automatically choose the best reception. This new service will work even better as it provides a seamless experience, even if mid-call which was not previously available.

Which network will it use?

The launch of “Smart Signal Sharing” now means that customers can make use of either networks HSDPA network (supporting up to 21Mbit/s), leading to more coverage and better data speeds throughout the country for either network’s customers.

The device will choose either network depending on their respective coverage in that location. The key benefit to this is that not only will calls (which was generally covered by the 2G signal sharing) be available in more areas, but now the device will automatically use the best available data connection.

How do I tell which network I’m connected to?

Your phone will display one of two network names depending on who your home network is:

Orange Customers

Orange customers will see one of two network names:

In areas where Orange has the best signal, it will show Orange as the network.

In areas where T-Mobile has the best signal, it will display “Orange T-Mobile” as the network name.

T-Mobile customers

Similar to Orange, T-Mobile customers will also see either one of two network names:

In areas where T-Mobile has the best signal, it will show T-Mobile as the network.

In areas where T-Mobile has the best signal, it will display “T-Mobile Orange” as the network name.

What does it cost?

For both networks’ customers, the cost of calls, texts and data when roaming to the other network is the same as if on the home network.

If you’re plan has inclusive allowances, usage on either network will come out of your inclusive allowance with no additional charges for “roaming” to the other network.

However, the cost of calling customers on the other network (i.e. a T-Mobile customer calling someone on Orange) will still be charged as a cross-network call for those who are calling outside their allowance or on a pay as you go basis.

Teething Problems

Here’s the key part; any massive change like “Smart Signal Sharing” is bound to have teething problems and with the latest service from EE, the teething problem is related to data access whilst roaming across to the other network.

User reports show that despite HSPA+ connectivity being displayed on the device, data access was non-existent and hopefully Everything Everywhere will aim to resolve this as a priority.

More Information / Coverage Check

So now you’ve read all the info above and want to decide on which network is generally better for you. We’d recommend checking each network’s coverage checker using the links below as well as looking at their dedicated more information pages.
