Checking Carphone Warehouse’s coming soon page today reveals something bright and looking very similar to a Galaxy.

The Pink Samsung Galaxy Note has appeared on the Carphone Warehouse’s page today with an expected date of June 2012.

The Pink version includes the same benefits of its more sombre siblings with a 5.3 inch screen with HD Super AMOLED technology, an 8 megapixel camera and spring Androids 2.3 Gingerbread.

Apple iPad 2 Drops in Price at Carphone Warehouse

We brought you news earlier of a drop in refurbished iPads from Apple Stores. Now Carphone Warehouse has gone one better and the discount in prices is available on new stocks.

The prices have been dropped by between £30-£50 on the iPad 2, Apple’s second generation iPads. The 32GB has been reduced by £30 with the 64GB reduced by £50. The iPad 2 can now be purchased at a cost of between £369 and £529 from the original selling price of £479-£659.

Both colour choices remain available and the offer of WiFi or 3GB versions.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 now just £199

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, the successor to the company’s original Galaxy Tab (and indeed first Android tablet) is now available in the UK for just £199 through retailer Carphone Warehouse. The silver variant of the device is available now, whilst the White version will launch on May 18th.

Your hard-earned money will get you a WiFi only Android tablet running the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system with 8GB internal memory. The device also features Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface and is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor.

The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 also features a 7inch touchscreen with 1024×600 pixels resolution, 1GB RAM, 3 megapixel rear camera, front-facing video call camera, an array of connectivity options and a 4,000 mAh battery.

Mobile Phone Roaming Charges to Drop

The cost of making and receiving calls overseas are set to drop from July 2012.

The European Union have set a cap on prices for roaming in the EU. This will be a welcome to those mobile phone users who have been ripped-off by the atrocious network charges that exist for roaming overseas.

Charged from July are: 24p minute to mae a call, 7p minute to receive a call and 8p to send a SMS message and 58p for data usage. The networks will certainly not like this when some charge up to and over a £1 for incoming calls and a text message can cost up to 36p or more depending on where you are in the world.

Unfortunately there is no such cap for world-wide roaming.

It is now left down to the networks to see how they will attempt to recoup the costs and of course, attempts will be made, do not be left in doubt about that.

T-Mobile and Orange have already increased charges at the beginning of 2012. It remains to be seen whether other networks will increase charges following this news.

“EU rapporteur and MEP Angelika Niebler said: “Parliament has succeeded in its call for cheaper roaming prices for consumers, and in particular for data roaming.

“In addition, from July 2014, consumers will be able to choose an operator other than their national operator for roaming services. The new rules will also help to open up the market to new entrants and so increase competition.”

Samsung Galaxy S3 Commitment

The recent hive of activity surround the Samsung Galaxy S III continues to build.

The Samsung Galaxy S III’s imminent debut will take place on 3 May and everyone who is anyone aims to be part of the party.

Carphone Warehouse has announced today, that it too, will be joining the big two, O2 and Vodafone in the sales of Samsung’s newest device.

Never has such activity surround a phone been as anticipated, outside that of the iPhone. We, here, at UK Mobile Review think this may be because it is likely to be the Official Phone for the Olympics. The Olympics is headed for London in the Summer and it is a very big event for the country as a whole. The last thing you are going to want to be known for, is The Shop where you cannot buy an Olympic phone. Or alternatively, if there is going to be an Olympic phone, you, as the high street phone dealer, who has made your name as an independent retailer, will of course, want to be selling a popular phone for the season.

Little is known about the Samsung Device, with much of what we have heard so far being speculation about its processor and display. Read more about it here. However, Samsung’s Galaxy S II is a popular smartphone and we have no doubt that a Galaxy S III will follow in its footsteps.

This year in the UK, we celebrate both the Olympics and the Queens Diamond Jubilee. There is no news as yet whether there will be a Offiicial Diamond Jubilee Phone for the Queen’s celebrations.

Carphone warehouse is selling the HTC One V on contract from £20.500 per month. The HTC One V features Beats Audio and comes with a 3.7″ touchscreen display. Dressed in a unibody design of aluminium the One V arrives out of the box with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The HTC One V is available on PAYG from £249.95 with £10 top-up voucher.

HTC One V goes up for pre-order in the UK

HTC’s first two One Series devices, the One X and the One S both launched in the UK last Thursday and now the third member of the inaugural HTC One Series, the One V has gone up for pre-order.

Available for pre-order through Carphone Warehouse, the device is expected to be delivered week beginning April 23rd (only 10 days away then) and is available on contracts from O2, Orange and Vodafone, starting at £20.50 per month with a 24 month minimum term.

With the One V also featuring Android Ice Cream Sandwich, the cheap price point and premium quality finish will most definitely make this a top seller.

Carphone Warehouse raided in armed robbery

Yet another Carphone Warehouse store has been subject to an armed robbery, with the latest one taking place in Cheltenham.

Four men entered the store at around 5pm last night wielding claw hammers and a knife.

Staff in the store, on Tewkesbury Road, were forced to hand over the store’s stock, which included several high-end smartphones, iPhones, iPads and games consoles.

Police attended the scene of the crime, but the robbers made their getaway in a dark-coloured vehicle.

HTC One X, HTC One S launched in the UK

It’s pretty much been expected since most networks confirmed they would have it today, but HTC’s latest One Series has launched in the UK with the One X and One S available to purchase today.

We’ve already covered all the deals in our pre-order round-up post, but some other ones to watch out for is O2′s launch offer on the One S and super pricing on the One X.

The HTC One X features a 1.5GHz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 “4-PLUS-1″ CPU which powers the 4.7 inch SLCD2 720p HD display. The HTC One S on the other hand sacrifices the quad-core processor for a 1.5GHz dual-core Krait CPU which powers the 4.3 inch Super AMOLED display (540 x 960 pixels).

Both devices feature 1GB RAM under the hood, an 8MP rear camera with HTC’s Sense imaging chip and the ability to snap picture in just 0.2 seconds from the lock screen. Both devices also have the capability to snap hi-res photos and record 1080p HD video simultaneously. Both devices run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC’s Sense UI v4 on top.

HTC have announced that all three One Series devices, the One X, One S and One V are to launch in Central Europe next week.

The One X will cost €599, whilst the One S comes in at €499 and the One V will come in at €299.

We went hands on with the One X and One S at Mobile World Congress last month, where the devices were announced. Featuring Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC Sense UI 4.0 as standard across the range, the One Series is definitely impressive.

All three devices will launch in Europe on April 2nd; we already know of pre-orders for the One X and the One S in the UK, with most retailers getting the devices next week.

UK telco retail stores to extend Sunday hours during the Olympics

UK telecommunications retailers and network stores could extend Sunday opening hours during the Olympics after Chancellor George Osborne announced a nationwide suspension to Sunday trading laws during the Games.

Retail store working in London and near to the Olympics site have backed proposals for longer working hours, as it would inevitably lead to overtime pay and increased commissions.

Mobile News Online report speaking with several retail staff whom are happy to work extended hours on a Sunday during the Olympics.

It is bound to be a good move for all retailers as thousands of people will be in and around London on those days and business will most definitely be booming.

Like their rival, Carphone Warehouse are offering the device on pre-orders with a delivery date of April 5th, the same date the device will land in their stores.

If you choose to order the device from Carphone Warehouse, the device will cost you from £36 per month or £479.95 if you choose to buy it outright.

Rival retailer Phones4u are offering the One X free on similar tariffs except pre-orders will come with a free HTC MediaLink HD for wireless streaming of media.

Featuring a 4.7 inch display, quad-core NVIDIA “4-PLUS-1″ processor and Android 4.0 with HTC Sense 4.0, the One X is widely tipped to be one of the hottest smartphones of 2012.

Carphone Warehouse are hoping to become the place of choice to purchase the new iPad when released on March 16th by offering consumers money off the iPad when they trade in their old iPad.

For iPad 1 WiFi only users, customers will get £135 for the 16GB model, £160 for the 32GB model and £175 for the 64GB model. If you have an iPad 1 WiFi + 3G model, you’ll get £155 for the 16GB model, £175 for the 32GB and £205 for the 64GB.

iPad users will receive more for their old device. Wi-Fi only iPad 2 customers will be given £245 for the 16GB, £275 for the 32GB and £325 for the 64GB model. Wi-Fi + 3G iPad 2 owners will receive £275 for the 16GB model, £325 for the 32GB and £355 for the 64GB model.

Nokia Lumia 900: Carphone Warehouse

The elusive Nokia Lumia 900 appeared earlier this year on Carphone Warehouse as coming soon, only at the time, the device was not destined for the UK.

However, that has all changed with the Nokia Lumia 900 coming to the UK and so the pre-registration page on the Carphone Warehouse is back up and running. You can register and Carphone Warehouse will inform you as soon as they have details of the Lumia 900 in stock.

The Lumia 900 is the big brother of the Lumia 800 and will carry an 8-megapixel camera and sport the gorgeous slim-shaped design that we know of in the Lumia 800 and Nokia N9.

I would register rather early if I were you, as I am sure this is going to be a very popular phone.

The Lumia 900 is the third Windows Phone out of Nokia’s collaboration with Microsoft.

Carphone Warehouse sales assistant stands accused of £40,000 fraud

A 24-year-old Carphone Warehouse employee has appeared in court charged with fraud at the UK’s largest independent mobile retailer.

Addison Marks appeared at Telford Magistrates Court where he stands accused of three counts of fraud, amounting to £40,000, whilst working at the company’s Telford retail store between January 5th and August 31st 2011.

Marks is accused of making fraudulents entries into the company’s sales systems to make a personal profit. Lisa Morris-Jones, defending Marks, told magistrates that the charges cover a period when £35,000 – £40,000 worth of goods had gone missing from the store.

Marks did not enter a plea and the case was adjourned, to recommence on February 14th.

Nokia Lumia 900 coming to the UK

Nokia recently announced the Nokia Lumia 900. The 900 is the third windows phone to be released by Nokia with the Lumia 900 being LTE equipped for 4g networks. The UK has yet to start the sale of 4g spectrum. However those already impressed with Nokia’s entrance into the windows phone ecosystem will be pkeased to see the 900 is making its way to the UK later this year.

BlackBerry RIM: Sold! ‘one’ BlackBerry Bold 9900

Manufacturers have been quick to dampen speculation that they are not interested in RIM or that they will make any offers on BlackBerry RIM. However, although Research in Motion have lost shares there can be no denying that their email enterprise remains the one to beat. In addition, the keypad evolution on the BlackBerry is second to none. It is enough to say that my latest purchase is the BlackBerry Bold 9900, on which I am writing this article. I have for sometime looked for a way to ‘blog on the go’ and the Apple iPad could not give me what I required, and that is a tactile keyboard that allows me to write on the go, quickly efficiently and extensively.

Although it may seem senseless to you, I can honestly say that the purchase of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is worth it for the joy of the keypad alone. Carphone Warehouse unfortunately advertise the white 9900 but do not stock it and I was directed to Phones4u who had the white in stock and very kindly got me up and running on my preferred network Vodafone.

A friend told me “if you want to be productive on the move, get a BlackBerry’. I am already seeing the clarity of his message.

Best Buy UK begin closing stores

Weekend gone, Best Buy began closing their stores following their decision to exit the UK market.

The joint venture with Carphone Warehouse, valued at a cool £1.1 billion, began in 2008 but even the opening of the first of the 11 stores, was delayed by a year, finally opening in 2009.

Two years on, Best Buy lost £46.7 million in the six months to September 2011 and faced with more losses, they decided to quit the market.

A Carphone Warehouse spokesperson confirmed that despite the store closures, the companies’ relationship was strong and Best Buy would still retain a 50% share of the largest independent retailer in the UK.

The net effect of the partnership, aside from the losses and charges, is that Best Buy own 50% of Carphone Warehouse, a partnership that will no doubt help both companies in the long-term.

Best Buy quitting the UK on January 15th

We’ve been expecting this for a while but Best Buy has finally confirmed it will close its 11 retail big-box format stores and its UK operations on January 15th 2012.

The US supremo has agreed to shut down the UK operations, after the joint venture with Carphone Warehouse’s release was dogged by launch issues and then failed to take off as the UK entered a recession.

Best Buy announced the final store closure data in a corporate letter, Yahoo reports. It read:

“We’ve loved bringing our passion for the latest and greatest technology to Britain over the past two years, and have always had the utmost appreciation, respect and commitment to the entire UK marketing place, our customers and stakeholers.”

“However, as you may know, based upon the outcome of our employee consultation, we intend to cease retail trading at our Best Buy UK branded stores and website by January 15th, 2012.”

Carphone Warehouse gets Lumia 800 branding

Carphone Warehouse have rebranded the landing page on their website with a little help from the guys at Nokia.

Visitors to the website of the largest independent retailer in Europe (Phone House) and the UK will be treated to some loud advertising around Nokia’s Lumia 800 Windows Phone device.

The advertising is only on the homepage but will definitely make an impact on the handset’s sales; visitors to Carphone Warehouse’s website usually have an interest in purchasing a mobile phone and this user-targetted advertising will definitely improve the reach this advertising has.

Yet another spectacular offer from Carphone Warehouse’s Winter Clearance sale. Following on from the HTC Cha Cha, they’ve also dropped the price on the Nokia E7.

Featuring the Symbian platform, possibly the Anna variant, the E7 is Nokia’s sleek, beautiful QWERTY slider device. It features a stunning 4.0 inch AMOLED screen with Nokia’s ClearBlack display and Corning Gorilla Glass.

HTC Cha Cha now just £7.99 per month

As part of the Winter Clearance over at Carphone Warehouse, they’ve dropped the price of the HTC Cha Cha to just £7.99 per month. That £191.76 over the two year commitment. That includes 50 minutes and 150 texts every month but sadly no data.

Running the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, the Cha Cha was one of the first phones to launch with a dedicated Facebook button allowing you to upload your pictures to the social networking site at the touch of a button.

The network coverage is provided by Talkmobile, a Multi Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) who are owned by the Carphone Warehouse group and operate using Vodafone UK’s coverage.

Overall, it’s a great deal for the handset. It’s definitely worth buying as someone’s first mobile phone. You can read our review of the device here.

Nokia N8 now only £10.50 per month

This is definitely one of my favourite smartphones. Featuring a gorgeous design, hotshot 12 megapixel snapper, HD Video capture and the Symbian operating system, this smartphone is definitely a good choice, especially at its all new low price.

Carphone Warehouse has now listed the phone for free on a £10.50 per month contract, which works out at the super low price of £252 over two years. Not only is this below the PAYG price for the phone, it is also significantly cheaper than its rival, the iPhone 3GS. The deal also allowS you to pay for the phone over two years as opposed to upfront, and with most Carphone Warehouse devices unlocked and unbranded, it works out a smashing deal.

The network is provided by Vodafone’s stellar network and the deal comes with 100minutes and 500 texts every month. It’s unclear whether the device will come with the latest Symbian Belle OS or an earlier variant.

Best Buy UK closing down sale begins tomorrow

We reported that Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy were set to end their joint venture in the UK by January 15th, and the inevitable closing down sale has come earlier than most expected.

Launching tomorrow via Best Buy’s online and retail channels promises to offer 10% – 30% off all items, and all products sold will still come with their original 12 months manufacturer warranty. Best Buy have closed all their stores this weekend to prepare for the sale.

No doubt by launching the sale earlier, Best Buy will be hoping to clear their stocks and make the whole shutting down process earlier. Plus, Christmas really could come early for the company as the sale will commence whilst people are considering Christmas presents to buy and this could see the company gain unexpected sales and interest.

Phones4u to head to America?

Phones4u is rumoured to be setting its sights on the US phone market, just as rival retailer Carphone Warehouse has just sold its stake in the joint venture with Best Buy in the U.S..

Phones4u is well experienced in operating both retail stores and concessional stores, through its large retail stores network and partnership with DSGi (owners of Currys and PC World) leading to Phones4u concessions in those stores.

Having travelled to a few countries on different continents, the one thing I’ve found personally is that there is a lack of specialist mobile phone chains. A move by Phones4u across the pond would certainly be brave by current economic standards but the brand has the knowledge and track record to crack the U.S. market and become the go-to destination for mobile phones.

£20,000 worth of mobile phones stolen

Thieves strike a store at independent retailer, Carphone Warehouse, and steal mobile phones worth up to £20,000.

The incident occurred at Carphone Warehouse’s store in West Didsbury on 19th November 2011; three armed men entered the store and two of the men stole the loot whilst a third stole mobile phones from customers and staff.

The third man was reported as saying ‘Don’t make me shoot you’ and revealed what was supposedly the handle of a black gun below his top.

Detective Constable Neil Tate, West Didsbury CID, said:

“These men have stolen thousands of pounds worth of mobile phones, and in doing so put staff and customers at this store through an ordeal no-one should ever be subjected to.

“The fact that one of the offenders threatened to shoot those inside gives you a picture of how scary it must have been for those involved.

“That is why it is so important we trace those responsible and bring them to justice.

“I want to appeal to anyone who has information to come forward. £20,000 worth of mobile phones is a lot of goods and I want to urge people to be on their guard against anyone who offers them cheap mobile phones. Unless they are a licensed dealer, please do not buy a mobile phone from someone and call us immediately as this could be vital to tracing the offenders.”

BlackBerry Curve 9380 headed to Carphone Warehouse

RIM’s new low-cost BlackBerry Curve 9380 smartphone is headed to Carphone Warehouse in the coming weeks.

Featuring a 3.2 inch WVGA (360 x 480 pixels) display, the Curve 9380 is powered by a rumoured 800MHz display and alongside the Curve 9360 is aimed at the low-cost spend market. The Curve 9380 is also the first low-cost all touchscreen display from RIM and is aimed at those who like RIM’s all touchscreen display but are priced too high.

It’s expected to be available at the same price as the Curve 9360 which is around £20 – £25 per month on contract and £200 – £250 sim-free. With Apple’s iPhone 3Gs and cheaper Android smartphones from ZTE and Huawei available at the same price point, the 9380 is certain to have some very stiff competition.

Nokia Lumia 800 coming sim-free on 16th November

The last few days have seen some interesting rumours surface regarding the hotly-anticipated Nokia Lumia 800.

The Lumia 800, Nokia’s first Windows Phone handset, is set for launch on 16th November, and was initially expected to be available both sim-free and on contract.

Earlier this week, online retailer Clove stated that the Lumia 800 would not be available to purchase without contract until early 2012 and today, Nokia confirmed that Clove were mistaken and the Lumia 800 would launch sim free on the 16th;

“The Nokia Lumia 800 goes on sale on the 16 November as we stated during the launch at Nokia World.

“There are some rather odd stories circulating at present, it’s rather flattering as it proves that there are a lot of people who believe the Lumia 800 will be a major sales item and are now trying to get it onto their shelves.

“Therefore we are making sure that by using these channels the Lumia 800 will be available to our customers in the widest variety of outlets from SIM free to contract.”

So that’s the 800 confirmed as sim-free from Wednesday next week! I recently spent some very brief time with the 800, you can read my thoughts here.

Now all we need to know is where to buy it sim-free; Carphone Warehouse seems the best bet given the majority of their devices are sim-free but Phones4u may also stock the sim-free devices. I guess we’ll all know very soon!

Carphone Warehouse to close UK Best Buy stores

11 UK superstores to close following losses of £83 million.

Carphone Warehouse is expected to close its 11 UK Best Buy superstores, following disappointment performances since they were first opened in 2010.

Carphone Warehouse, the UK’s largest mobile independent retailer, joined forces with Best Buy, the US retail giant, to launch the American retailer’s UK operations, but external factors such as the global credit crunch and subsequent buying freeze led to unspectacular results.

When unveiling the new partnership in 2009, the company planned to open 200 stores, which was quickly dwindled down to 100 UK stores. It stopped opening new stores after opening its 11th store.

“We always said we would open 11 stores and then conduct a strategy review. We are now conducting our evaluation with our partners and will provide an update in due course,” a Carphone Warehouse spokesperson said on Sunday. The company declined to comment further.

In under two years since they were unveiled, the joint retail stores have attained £83 million worth of losses, with a further £35 million half-year loss expected to be announced on Tuesday when Carphone chairman Charles Dunstone announces the company’s half-year results.

According to The Sunday Times, Dunstone may unveil the closures as early as Tuesday. However, it doesn’t mean Best Buy will exit the UK market, as some Carphone Warehouse stores will be revamped with mini Best Buy concessions selling a range of electrical goods.

iPhone 4S headed to Phones4u and Carphone Warehouse

Apple’s iPhone 4S has only been announced for a few hours but Carphone Warehouse and Phones4u have both signalled their intent to stock the device.

They’ve both added iPhone 4S ‘register for updates’ sections to the homepages of their website; it is my understanding according to sources that both companies will stock the device on its October 14th launch date.

Features on the device include a dual core processor, an 8-megapixel camera with face detection and 1080p Full HD video capture. The battery has also been improved to offer 8 hours of talk time on 3G or 14 hours of 2G talk time. The iPhone 4S is powered by the same dual-core Apple A5 chip found in the iPad 2 and will ship with iOS5.

Three, O2 and T-Mobile have already shown their hand in stocking the device on launch and with these two retailers stocking the iPhone 4S as well, Apple could have a very big seller!
