Ever wondered when the world of forensic analysis, i.e. all that fancy stuff from CSI (and other such TV programs) would become more “mobile”? Maybe you haven’t but RIM’s latest patent application should get you talking.

Waterloo based RIM have applied for a patent outlining an “apparatus” connected to a portable electronic device (think phone or tablet) that would shine light on nearby objects, take photographs and display results including potential contamination.

Why have they applied for the patent? It’s either a wacky and ingenious way to get the BlackBerry platform into more government departments or just a wild guess at something that could be used in the future. Either way, it doesn’t look like it’ll be a real tangible service/product soon (or maybe it will, who knows?)

Samsung may be reaping the rewards from its multiple Galaxy product ranges, but Apple is showing that the world can be dominated with just a few products. Latest research from Gartner shows that Apple has gained 7.9% market share of the entire global phone sales market, despite only have three iPhones on sale. The research firmly pegs Apple in third place behind Nokia and Samsung.

Total sales of mobile phones are down on last year, but smartphones continue to rise as more people choose smartphones over featurephones. Gartner also warns that whilst Apple’s iOS (and Windows Phone) offer different experiences, devices running on the Android platform would struggle to differentiate going forward with the main differential being price, especially in the mid-range.

“This is particularly true for smartphones based on the Android OS, where a strong commoditization trend is at work and most players are finding it hard to break the mould.”

BlackBerry & OS Approved by CESG for Government Use

Slough - London, UK – May 17, 2012 – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced that CESG, the National Technical Authority for Information Assurance in the UK, has approved the BlackBerry® 7 operating system for government use. The approval enables public sector workers to utilise the enhanced performance and rich functionality of the latest BlackBerry smartphones available in the UK.

The BlackBerry® Enterprise Solution from RIM is the only mobile solution approved by CESG to protect material classified up to and including ‘Restricted’.

Stephen Bates, UK Managing Director, RIM, said: “We’re pleased to see CESG taking such positive steps to help ensure UK government workers have access to the latest suite of BlackBerry 7 smartphones. Thanks in part to our industry leading security credentials, BlackBerry smartphones are widely deployed in UK public sector organisations including the Ministry of Defence (MoD), most of Central Government and more than half of the UK’s police forces, NHS and local government organisations. BlackBerry smartphones are enabling greater efficiencies and improved citizen service by providing access to data such as patient records, the Police National Computer and other government systems at the point of need.”

Using the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution has led to striking savings and improved citizen service across many public sector bodies, including UK police forces who are using BlackBerry smartphones to increase productivity amongst officers and to enable them to spend more time on the streets and less time in the station.

BlackBerry smartphones currently available in the UK and covered by the new approval from CESG include the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900, BlackBerry Bold 9790, BlackBerry® Torch™ 9810, BlackBerry Torch 9860, BlackBerry® Curve™ 9360 and BlackBerry Curve 9380.

RIM is planning an expansion of its Indian retail outlets, in a move to bring the company closer to their key Indian audience. The new stores will build on the original store opened in Delhi last month as well as the new store in Gurgaon which was opened last Friday.

The new stores will feature areas to showcase both consumer and enterprise applications and customers will be able to try out devices in a live demo area. The 15 new stores will launch in major locations across India, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

RIM’s flagship stores concept in the India is proving quite popular and it would be great to see the company bring the stores to the European continent (preferably the UK). The concept of a manufacturer branded retail store has worked exceptionally well for Apple across the world and there is no reason why RIM can’t make a similar success of the idea.

The BlackBerry Curve 9320 was announced only a few days ago and it is already in the hands of a reviewer. I like how the reviewer has his site logo on both the BlackBerry on display and his BlackBerry Playbook in the background.

Here we take a hands-on look at the functions and buttons at work on BlackBerry’s newest smartphone. The 9320 is the successor to the 9300 and 8520. The 8520 has been one of the best sellers for BlackBerry with its low price starting point. The reviewer does let us know that the price of this device is ‘cheap as chips’.

The approval allows all DoD customers to use the following BlackBerry 7 smartphones on DoD networks:

RIM and TomTom announce a partnership where the companies will work together to bring TomTom's real-time traffic data to RIM's new BlackBerry 10 operating system.

RIM’s new BlackBerry 10 platform definitely looks good and several companies are eager to get on board with RIM’s latest creation. The most recent company to be revealed as working with RIM on the new platform is TomTom, a global household name in navigation. TomTom and RIM will work on bringing the former’s real-time traffic data to BlackBerry Traffic, one of RIM’s new BB10 services.

RIM is hoping to use BlackBerry Traffic to reduce commute times and the partnership with TomTom could even see user commutes reduced by up to 50 minutes per week. TomTom’s map and location data will be available to use for users through BlackBerry Maps, whilst for developers, an API will be available throughout BlackBerry 10 to query map and location information.

RIM’s new BlackBerry 10 platform is really a last chance saloon for the company and every mainstream platform needs a solid navigation solution; if the implementation is right, the company’s new platform could definitely take a big step in the right direction.

Latest research from market research firm Nielsen has shown that more than half (50.4%) of US mobile subscribers now own a smartphone, following an increase from December 2011 (47.8%).

Smartphone penetration continued to dominate the key US market, with Apple being called the top manufacturer whilst Android was touted as the top platform. Nokia’s Lumia 900, released in the US last month, has continued to do well and capture consumers’ imagination, whilst the Windows Phone platform only captured 1.7% market share in Q1 2012 (even Windows Mobile, the older version of the platform, had a higher market share at 4.1%).

During Q1 2012, 48% of smartphones ran Android, whilst iOS captured 32% market share and RIM’s fledgling BlackBerry platform came in at a healthy 11.6% market share.

Internal documents leak showing off RIM's new BlackBerry 10 OS, showing off some of its cool BB10 exclusive features such as motion based lockscreen and screen sharing.
No related posts.

Internal documents showing off RIM’s new BlackBerry OS have leaked through CrackBerry, showing off the lockscreen, video editor and the OS’ cool screen sharing feature.

The OS inherits many characteristics of Nokia’s N9 MeeGo Swipetastic UI, with RIM’s OS bringing a very similar three homescreen (App launcher, Task Manager, Unified Notifications) approach and is in stark contract to RIM’s current non-finger friendly BlackBerry OS 7.

RIM have definitely thought about ensuring their new platform presents several different cool features and one of these is the motion-based lockscreen where tilting the device either displays a second row of notifications or the full notification.

BlackBerry 10 also brings an advanced video editor, courtesy of RIM’s acquisition of JayCut, as well as a feature that introduces screen sharing whilst in a message, email or video call.

South Wales Police have introduced the BlackBerry Smart Solutions to improve their work and community relations.

The BlackBerry smartphones allows them quick and easy contact back to the main police station to check and identify individual information from the street and information can be update live. This allows the officers to spend more time on the street and less time in the Police Station updating, recording and researching information, that is now easily on hand via the BlackBerry Solutions.

Take a look at the video to see the Police Officers at work and how they implement BlackBerry Solutions into their everyday policing policies.

Research In Motion’s CEO, Thorsten Heins, said in a press conference yesterday that the company will be launching a 4G LTE version of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

The tablet is expected to be equipped with an updated dual-core 1.5GHz processor, Near Field Communications (NFC) capabilities and a similar design and size to the current BlackBerry PlayBook, which is currently available in a Wi-Fi only capacity.

The device is expected to launch by the end of 2012, but rumours suggest that a June/July launch could be also be possible as RIM looks to regain traction, following a dismal financial performance.

The company has just launched their new BlackBerry 10 operating system and alongside the launch of the platform, unveiled a superb stylish powerful high-spec developer exclusive device.

It looks like RIM could be back in the smartphone game if the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device is anything to go by. RIM’s CEO Thornsten Heins, announced the developer-exclusive device in his keynote at BlackBerry World 2012.

Engadget report the smartphone features a high resolution display than Apple’s Retina Display (355ppi vs 330ppi) and a higher resolution display than the company’s 7-inch Playbook tablet despite a much smaller 4.2 inch display.

Features under the hood include 16GB internal storage, 1GB RAM, a microSIM card slot, microHDMI-out and both front and back cameras. The device comes running PlayBook OS 2.0 and RIM has already confirmed the device will be upgradeable to the company’s BlackBerry 10 OS later this year.

This deivce looks fantastic and early reports suggest that it has definitely got a lot of developers on board to developing apps for the newly announced platform. The BlackBerry 10 OS should also have the benefit of Mippin support, with the app maker recently announcing plans to support app development for all of RIM’s platforms.

RIM’s only just begun giving out its first BlackBerry 10 developer device but has already confirmed that a second “very limited-edition” device will break ranks and be made available to developers later this year.

The second device will be available to anyone who has been given the Alpha device (at BlackBerry Jam this week), developed an app for the platform and had it approved by RIM and the reason for the second device is that RIM are not planning to upgrade the Alpha dev device to the full version of BlackBerry 10 but still want to reward developers.

The only question is how long until either developer device appears on eBay (and if anyone would like to sell one, feel free to contact me!)

Samsung overtook Apple to become no 1. in smartphone shipments globally, as part of the 42.5% year on year smartphone market growth.

Market research firm IDC say that overall phone shipments totalled 398.4 million versus Q1 2011 and Samsung, who recently ousted Nokia to become No 1 global handset maker, also overtook Apple to lead both markets.

Samsung just reported a record 82% increase in profits delivering a total of 5.05 trillion won, helped by amazing sales for its Galaxy SII flagship and according to the IDC, Samsung captures 29.1% of the smartphone market in Q1 versus Apple who claimed 24.2% market share.

Ramon Llamas, IDC senior research analyst, said:

“The race between Apple and Samsung remained tight during the quarter, even as both companies posted growth in key areas. Apple launched its popular iPhone 4S in additional key markets, most notably in China, and Samsung experienced continued success from its Galaxy Note smartphone/tablet and other Galaxy smartphones. With other companies in the midst of major strategic transitions, the contest between Apple and Samsung will bear close observation as hotly-anticipated new models are launched.”

IDC’s research also confirms that Nokia fell from 23.2% to 8.2%, whilst RIM dropped from 13.6% to 6.7% and HTC dropped from 8.9% to 4.8%.

With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy SIII tomorrow evening, it looks like Samsung’s reign atop the pile could continue further. Some of the rumoured specs of the upcoming flagship device include a 4.8 inch 720p (or possibly 1080p Full HD) Super AMOLED HD display, quad-core 1.4GHz Exynos CPU and 12 megapixel camera. We’re reporting live from the event so stay tuned as we bring you it whilst it breaks.

BlackBerry Jam is underway in Orland and key to any move forward by RIM is the get developers on board developing the much-needed applications for any new operating system.

In today’s keynote RIM said it is possible for developers to earn $10,000 a year with their new applications for BlackBerry 10 within the first year.

RIM’s key message is that developers want to be part of a mobile ecosystem without breakage and wish to see a keen return on their investment.

RIM, of course, is not going to hand out $10,000 in its guaranteed payout. Developers will be required to submit suitable apps not just any useless junk.

Are you a developer who is keen on taking the opportunities that RIM is offering?

Today, during their BlackBerry World 2012 keynote, RIM officially released their BlackBerry 10 platform.

Based on a similar QNX-based technology to RIM’s BlackBerry Playbook, BlackBerry 10 brings a whole UI redesign to RIM’s smartphone and possible tablet portfolio.

The first BlackBerry 10 devices are not expected until the back end of this year but that hasn’t stopped RIM from bringing the platform to the limelight.

Full press release below.

Press Release RIM Launches BlackBerry 10 Platform

Developers get powerful tools in advance to build apps that deliver highly engaging mobile experiences for users

BlackBerry World 2012 / BlackBerry 10Jam – Orlando, FL- Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today unveiled its vision for the BlackBerry 10 platform at the BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, Florida released and the initial developer toolkit for native and HTML5 software development. The toolkit is available in beta as afree download from http://developer.blackberry.com.

“BlackBerry 10 builds upon the core values and exceptional user experiences that have attracted more than 77 million BlackBerry customers around the world today,” said Alec Saunders, Vice President, Developer Relations and Ecosystems Development. “Developers building for BlackBerry 10 will be able to easily create the kind of cutting-edge apps that deliver truly engaging experiences and ‘wow’ customers, whether through integration with native features and other apps like BBM or by leveraging the new signature design elements of this new and powerful mobile computing platform.”

“There is tremendous interest, anticipation and momentum building toward the launch of BlackBerry 10 devices, and today we’re extremely excited to release the BlackBerry 10 developer beta tools for general use,” said Christopher Smith, Vice President, Handheld Application Platform and Tools at Research In Motion. “Developers can use this first beta of the tools to get started building apps for BlackBerry 10 and as the tools evolve over the coming months, developers will have access to a rich API set that will allow them to build even more integrated apps. The toolkit we are delivering today also meets developers on their own terms. Whether using the powerful Cascades framework, writing direct native code or developing in HTML5, BlackBerry 10 will empower developers to create attractive and compelling apps that excite customers.”

The toolkit includes the BlackBerry® 10 Native SDK with Cascades, which allows developers to create graphically rich, high performance native applications in C/C++or Qt. The Native SDK for BlackBerry 10 has a rich set of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that give developers access to core device features and arange of BlackBerry application services, such as Push and Payment services. Cascades is a powerful native application development toolset that allows developers to easily build visually stunningapplications without having to write graphics code.

More details about the NDK for BlackBerry 10are posted on http://devblog.blackberry.com/2012/04/blackberry-10-native-sdk and for Cascades at http://devblog.blackberry.com/2012/04/blackberry-10-cascades-available-n….

The toolkit also includes support for HTML5 application developers with the BlackBerry 10 WebWorks TM SDK, allowing them to create native-like applications using common web programming technologies. The BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK allows developers to use HTML5 and CSS for building apps and provides JavaScript bindings to native device APIs along with RIM’s open source UI toolkit, bbUI.js, to create applications with native-like capabilities. Inthis initial release of the BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK, developers have access to a core subset of the full WebWorks APIs, including Identity, Application and App events, System and system events. More details about the BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK are posted on http://devblog.blackberry.com/2012/04/blackberry-10-webworks-sdk.

Applications created with any of the BlackBerry 10 tools will run on BlackBerry 10 smartphones as well as BlackBerry® PlayBook tablets when the new platform becomes available for the PlayBook. All of the SDKs will be updated to give developers access to more of the BlackBerry 10 unique capabilities over the coming months.

To further help developers get started on the BlackBerry 10 platform, BlackBerry 10 Jam attendees are being provided a BlackBerry 10Dev Alpha device. This testing unit is a further commitment from RIM to provide the developer community with the tools they need to build successful applications for BlackBerry 10 devices, so that they are ready when the first BlackBerry 10devices are expectedto launch in the latter part of 2012.

The NDK for BlackBerry 10, including Cascades, is available for download at http://developer.blackberry.com/native/download.

RIM has admitted that it is behind the Wake Up Australia campaign that saw a flash mob of black-clad protestors appear outside an Apple Store in Australia carrying placards adorned with “Wake Up”. We originally believe Samsung was behind the campaign but reports suggested that RIM could have been the culprit, which has now been confirmed by RIM.

What is it all about? Well RIM says the campaign is designed to get Australians to “wake up” to it’s upcoming BlackBerry 10 platform and the Canadian BlackBerry manufacturer is promising an announcement on May 7th, which is designed to show Australians the true meaning of being “best in business”.

This is actually pretty good marketing but may have worked against the BlackBerry maker as so many people expected Sasmung to be the culprit given the proximity to the Galaxy S III launch this Thursday. Nonetheless, we’re interested to see what RIM has to say and we’ll bring you the info as it breaks.

Remember the “Wake Up Australia” campaign which kicked off with protests at an Apple retail store in Australia? At the time, we thought it was co-ordinated by Samsung, given its close proximity to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy SIII this Thursday.

Instead, Samsung confirmed on Friday that the campaign had nothing to do with the campaign, which saw black-clad protestors arrive at an Apple store with “Wake Up” banners.

A little digging and investigating by MacTalk amongst others has revealed that the website linked to the campaign (Wake Up Australia) could in fact have been published by RIM, as the source code for the website reveals DoubleClick Floodlight Tag ID, 2215527, which is also used on RIM’s Australian BlackBerry website.

RIM is not expected to reveal any new smartphones at BlackBerry World 2012 this week so we’re no closer to knowing what this campaign is to do with but rest assured, we’ll bring you all the news as it breaks.

Honestly, this is something I never thought I’d find myself writing but given the ongoing patent lawsuits and countersuits in the industry, it was bound to happen. Apparently, RIM has been accused of stealing the idea for the BlackBerry Infrastructure back in 1995, by the claimant Tahir Mahood.

The BlackBerry Infrastructure provides the supersecure delivery of email and calendars that BlackBerry devices have become known for but last year, RIM suffered some major public outages leaving millions of people stranded. RIM’s secure infrastructure and social network BlackBerry Messenger, which uses the infrastructure, were accused of being used to co-ordinate the London Riots last year, which further affected the company’s already red finances.

With RIM’s BlackBerry Jam 2012 developer conference starting next week, the first images of a BlackBerry 10 Developer Alpha device have appeared on the web.

CrackBerry reports that attendees to the conference will receive the device for them to test their apps on but this particular device will never be put on sale for consumers.

The device is said to feature a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 1200×600 resolution display alongside an LED flash on the rear and a custom version of RIM’s BlackBerry 10 OS.

BlackBerry 10 Jam is underway in Orlando. As part of the speakers, sessions and labs there will be toolsets available for developers of BlackBerry 10.

The first stage of BlackBerry 10 Developer Tools will include SDK kits for Native, Webworks, Adobe air and Android applications.

Attendees will also receive a limited edition BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha smartphone to develop on. BlackBerry makes it clear that is is not a finalised BlackBerry 10 smartphone either by its software or hardware but that it is running a modified version of the PlayBook OS. It is only for developers and not for the ordinary consumer or user and you can only pick one up at the BlackBerry 10 Jam. And again… its another event that I am not at. Sigh…

We will of course bring you images of the device, once we have more information.

Google is tidying up its back garden and pruning the weeds and with it goes an array of services that it no longer sees a use for.

One of these is Google Sync for BlackBerry which will cme to an end on 1 Jue 2012. Users of the app can continue to use the service after its death, so I would suggest thou grab the download now. I have never used the service but will grab the download anyways. You never know when you might need it in the future by my thinking.

In addition, Google Talk is to disappear with users required to use the Android app.

RIM looks set to launch a white variant of their popular BlackBerry Bold 9790 smartphone, with images of the unreleased device appearing on CrackBerry Forums.

The device is set for a Q2 launch, and has been spotted in the wild previously in the same forums.

When it does launch, we can expect Phones4u to aim for an exclusive with the device; so far, they are holding exclusives on several smartphones in white, including the Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 900.

Although RIM has and continues to have a bad year in the lead up to BlackBerry 10, they are still working hard on its developing market strategy with the release of the BlackBerry Curve 9220.

Research in Motion announced the BlackBerry Curve 9220 for the India market. Although it is a budget BlackBerry, it does what a BlackBerry does best. The device comes with a full QWERTY keyboard. To-date BlackBerry’s still have the best keyboard of all smartphones. The 9220 has a 2.44-inch display with an optical trackpad.

The BlackBerry Curve 9220 is specialised for its community focus and social sharing and comes with a dedicated shortcut to access BBM and an FM radio “to listen to news in your community.” It has a 2 megapixel camera with fixed-focus and video recording, Bluetooth and a speakerphone. With 512MB and the additional option of a microSD card, Wi-Fi but not 3G, the Curve 9220 will get you through the day with 7hours of talk time and 18 days of standby from a single charge.

RIM’s global sales chief Patrick Spence told Reuters:

“We’re really trying to build on and help those people who are moving from feature phone to smartphone. We believe we can be successful in that”.

For quite some time, Twitter has been running their own advertising platform called Promoted Tweets, which allows advertisers to send our specific tweets to users of mobile and desktop devices.

Twitter has now announced two improvements to Promoted Tweets, with the ads program now supporting BlackBerry devices (via the mobile web or official Twitter app) and the second feature is the option to target users of specific operating systems. The option includes desktop/laptop computers as well as iOS, Android, BlackBerry and other mobile devices (smartphones and tablets).

Kevin talks about the pros and cons of the device and that it does give him a feeling of exclusivity when he is using the Porsche but that the BlackBerry 9900, essentially exactly the same phone but in a different dressing is the better of the two models.

So here’s something I came across whilst browsing CrackBerry; one of the users on their forum claims to have a BlackBerry Bold 9700 Ferrari Limited Edition (or whichever way you want to put that!)

This looks seriously immense, but it’s running OS5 (so quite outdated) and isn’t really going to cut it. Then again, if you’re a Ferrari addict, will you really care? It’s gold, immense and comes with special Ferrari packaging.

It does look like it was produced by RIM in conjunction with Ferrari, either as a limited edition device or as potentially the start of RIM’s luxury range, which also features the Porsche BlackBerry.

Either way, I’ve not seen this before so I thought I’d bring it to your attention. Full pics below.

Is this why the company’s ex-CEO was forced to resign?

RIM’s ex-CEO, Jim Balsillie wanted to open up the company’s BBM platform to rival devices, sparking a change of strategy for the suffering BlackBerry maker.

Sources inside the company said to Reuters, that Balsillie, who resigned as CEO of the company in January, was in talks with carriers in the US and Europe to give users of rival devices access to RIM’s popular social messaging platform.

Under the arrangement, the plan was for networks to offer certain “social” plans that would include access to BBM, allowing networks to entice consumers from feature phones to entry level smartphones. The BBM service would still have run on RIM’s private network.

However, Balsillie found opposition to his plan from throughout RIM, and this was ultimately the reason he walked away from his role as co-CEO of the company. There was the additional factor that RIM’s servers may not have been able to cope with the additional strain of the influx of BBM users following the several high-profile outages last year.

The biggest U.S. mobile provider, Verizon Wireless has announced plans to start charging customers a $30 fee on top of the handset price paid on upgrades with the extra revenue used to offset Verizon’s ever growing costs.

Last quarter, Verizon reported a decline in wireless profit margins, which were deeply affected by the amount Verizon paid to Apple to gain rights to sell the popular iPhone.

Whilst new subscribers often help to boost revenue, existing customers switching devices can often lead to little or no extra revenue for the company, which is one of the principal reasons Verizon is introducing this fee.
