It rushed trough social media like a fire trough dry wood, the inoffical whatsapp client “Wazapp” for MeeGo devices was released yesterday by its creator Tarek Galal. At the Moment it’s in beta-state and does not support image/music/location etc sharing , but that will be fixed in the future, it also contains some bugs but so far i have found it working flawlessly. I will post a review of it as soon as i used it a few days with screenshots and everything .

This one is for all our followers Down Under; if you’ve been waiting on tenderhooks for news of Nokia’s Lumia 610 and 900 in your territory then you’re in luck as it looks like both devices will land in June.

The Lumia 900 is set to be an Optus exclusive (for now at least), and will cost $0 upfront alongside a $59 contract over 24 months. Not keen to be tied down? Shell out $699 and the device will be yours free of all strings. However, it’s worth noting that despite a fully functional LTE network, the Lumia 900 for Optus will be HSPA+ only and not LTE compatible.

The Lumia 610 looks set to land in June, initially as a ‘Boost Mobile’ exclusive until it lands on Vodafone Australia in July. The Lumia 610 looks set to be prepaid only and not available on pay monthly contracts but its initial $329 price tag should could down in price when Vodafone launch the model.

Samsung may be reaping the rewards from its multiple Galaxy product ranges, but Apple is showing that the world can be dominated with just a few products. Latest research from Gartner shows that Apple has gained 7.9% market share of the entire global phone sales market, despite only have three iPhones on sale. The research firmly pegs Apple in third place behind Nokia and Samsung.

Total sales of mobile phones are down on last year, but smartphones continue to rise as more people choose smartphones over featurephones. Gartner also warns that whilst Apple’s iOS (and Windows Phone) offer different experiences, devices running on the Android platform would struggle to differentiate going forward with the main differential being price, especially in the mid-range.

“This is particularly true for smartphones based on the Android OS, where a strong commoditization trend is at work and most players are finding it hard to break the mould.”

Nokia Builds on Series 40 with Two New Mobiles originally appeared on UK Mobile Review on May 16, 2012.

Latest research from ABI Research shows that the majority of users spend little to nothing on mobile apps, with more than 70% of users spending less than $7.50 per month. The research also found that the top 3% of spenders accounted for nearly 20% of all revenue generated.

“The median amount among the consumers who spend money on apps is much lower than the average, just $7.50 per month,” senior analyst Aapo Markkanen said. “This reflects the disproportionate role of big spenders as a revenue source.”

The research also found that the apps that generated the most revenue were often utility apps targetted at business professionals or iOS games with in-app purchases, as Apple discovered.

Whilst the research concerns the US market, it can be applied to app revenue generation globally and although not accurate, it can provide an indication of app revenues worldwide.

LONDON – May 14, 2012
?According to a US consumer survey conducted by ABI Research, about two-thirds of app users have spent money on an application on at least one occasion. Among these paying users, the mean spend was $14 per month. Behind the seemingly high average amount there are, however, some striking findings.

Senior analyst Aapo Markkanen explains, “The median amount among the consumers who spend money on apps is much lower than the average, just $7.50 per month. This reflects the disproportionate role of big spenders as a revenue source. The highest-spending 3% of all app users account for nearly 20% of the total spend, while over 70% spends either nothing or very little.”

The numbers also reflect certain trends in different app categories. Thus far, the releases that have best succeeded in making money have typically been utility apps often used for business purposes, or iOS games monetized through strings of in-app purchases. In both cases the money comes from a remarkably small base of customers. Is there anything developers can do to boost the conversion rate from free to premium?

Markkanen has two recommendations. “First, don’t get obsessed by mobile and apps, but remember also the web,” he adds. “Most of the successful app concepts either support, or are supported by, a web component. Second, see your product through a long-term lens, asking yourself what could convince your customers to still engage with the app in two years’ time. Evernote, for example, has excelled at both. It has skillfully combined the web and the mobile, and at the same time it has also managed to become a habit for many of its users. It demonstrates that the longer its customers stick around with a free version of an app, the likelier they’re going to convert to its premium version.”

Rafe from All About Windows Phone has established that there are now 90,000 apps available on the Windows Phone Marketplace, meaning the platform is growing at an incredible rate having recently crossed the 70,000 apps milestone less than two months ago.

The numbers pale in comparison to Apple’s App Store (around 600,000) and the Google Play Store (500,000) but given the platform is only around a year old, 90k is a good milestone for Microsoft (and Nokia) to have reached.

As we all know, once you get to that number of apps, it’s less about quantity and more about quality. That being said, it’s definitely great to see Nokia’s adopted platform become appealing to developers.

Michael from PocketNow has uploaded a video comparing the mammoth HTC One X against Nokia’s flagship Lumia 900 smartphone.

The video is really well thought out and a very fair comparison of the two smartphones that the respective companies hope will give them the edge going into the second half of 2012.

HTC’s One X features a quad-core 1.5 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor whilst Nokia’s Lumia 900 features a 1.4GHz single-core CPU. Despite a much more powerful CPU in the One X, Nokia’s Lumia 900 features the Windows Phone OS meaning it doesn’t need a multi-core CPU and works perfectly fluid with a single-core processor.

The Nokia Lumia 800 is ‘literally out of this world’ or at least as far away from the earth that you would expect a mobile smartphone to be.

A team from the ASTRA project (Atmospheric Science Through Robotic Aircraft) chose the Nokia Lumia 800 to be at the forefront of its investigations into low cost observations of the atmosphere.

The Lumia 800 is launched into the stratosphere and used as a reading tool for the projector of other missions to come, like weather balloons.

However, I am not very scientific but I can appreciate a beautiful shot of the atmosphere and the other beautiful pictures that have been shot with the Nokia Lumia 800 and we show a few of them here.

Nokia’s 41 megapixel toting 808 PureView has been spotted at Khalida’s Mall in the UAE, with the device appearing at the Nokia branded store in one of the region’s malls.

The 808 PureView was apparently in store in limited quantities, but the device was not on general showing as it’s not released yet.

No camera samples were allowed to be taken but Jay‘s tipster says the finished 808 PureView was simply amazing!

The 808 PureView looks set for release on our shores sometime in the next month or so and you can check all our Nokia 808 coverage, including multiple hands on and videos, through our dedicated portal.

Apple looks set to drop Google and make the move to its own maps application. It is thought that the new maps will be the clinching feature of the new OS.

We are not yet sure how the maps can bring a bigger newer New touch to Apple’s iOS 6 after the launch of Siri but it is something we look forward to where Apple can take this.

Apple has purchased Placebase, C3 Technologies and Poly 9 – the three combined offers Apple the technology and software to bring forth a unique and captivating experience. The app is said to look much different to its present guise but we do not imagine that it will be too far different that novice users will not be able to use it. Apple has been known for their simple UI and it is likely they will not want to counteract that position when ease of use is part of its known capabilities.

Apple acquired C3 technology back in October 2011 and it is known for its 3D mapping solutions, street-level photography as well as user-generated images.

You will be familiar with C3 technology if you use Nokia Maps as it plays a part in their inbuilt technology and was part of Nokia Ovi Maps.

We have not clarified what licences Nokia has with Apple for the use of C3 technology.

Nokia Reading begins its roll-out today with the new application being available in the first instance toRussia, Germany, Spain, France and the UK. Other countries will receive Nokia Reading throughout the rest of the year. Nokia Reading should start to show up in the Marketplace over the next few weeks. But, being eager, I have already checked today, but its not yet arrived in the UK.

Nokia Reading will bring best sellers and new releases at competitive prices and international classics available for free. Nokia Reading is different to other eBook readers in that the application will present books from your local language – bring local books to your windows phone. Nokia Reading will provide ebooks not only to global countries but it will also mean that places that are non accessible to traditional readers such as Kindle and Kobo are able to read books via Nokia Reading. The range of free books will aid those who are unable to afford the purchase of books or who would like a wider ranged library.

Nokia plans to update and enhance Nokia Reading with audiobooks and news streams in the future.

Nokia’s 808 PureView smartphone was announced back at Mobile World Congress in February and impressed everyone with its 41 megapixel Carl Zeiss optics alongside 1080p HD video capture.

The 808 PureView runs the Symbian Belle OS, and whilst it’s been updated with a new look and fresh UI, the platform is still Symbian which has not historically done well in the key US market but the sensor alone could possibly persuade people to switch from either iOS or Android. It’s also known that Nokia plans to bring the PureView technology to their Lumia devices in the future.

The best bit of news for our US readers is that Nokia US President Chris Weber has confirmed the 808 PureView is actually headed to the US market but will be sold outright with no carrier subsidies.

The Nokia 808 PureView is expected to cost around $700 but no release date information is currently available.

This is absolutely hilarious but Apple’s straight-talking Siri voice recognition service on the iPhone 4S has taken to advising users that the best cellphone ever is in fact, Nokia’s Windows Phone flagship Lumia 900 smartphone.

Siri works by retrieving information from analytical engine Wolfram Alpha and it seems like top customer reviews for the Lumia 900 have finally begun to hit home in the most bizarre of circumstances.

We’ve tested it just now and it works on our iPhone 4S which is in the UK. If you want to show this off or just wind people up, get them to ask Siri the following question:

Nokia appears to be getting some exclusive branding on their Windows Phone.

The Nokia Lumia 900 which has recently gone on sale in the UK was sighted with a Nokia logo on the Marketplace hub.

Nokia Windows Phone includes many exclusive applications which will not be available anywhere else. The newly revealed Windows Marketplace icon could be an indication of Nokia’s intention to open its own Nokia-branded store within the Windows Phone Marketplace.

It is not yet known if other Windows Phone manufacturers will be following in the same footsteps.

Nokia has had several court cases over patents between Germany’s IPCom. The struggle has been ongoing for over five years regarding patents.

Nokia claims IPCom’s feeds for licensing were ‘excessive and unjustifiable’. However, Germany’s IPCom won a High Court ruling last year that Nokia was infringing on patent 100A.

Nokia lost its appeal today but stated the impact will not affect sales in the UK. IPCom is seeking an injunction on the sales of Nokia phones in Britain.

Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone device, the Lumia 900 has finally made its long awaited debut in the UK, courtesy of retailer Phones4u who have gained an exclusive on the device until May 27th. Phones4u are also offering a free Nokia Purity HD headset to anyone who orders before May 31st.

Featuring a 4.3 inch AMOLED display, the Lumia 900 is powered by a 1.4 GHz single-core CPU and ships with the Tango update of Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. The US version of the device was announced back at CES in January and released in the US in early April, but increased demand for the device in the US led to a delay in the release date for the UK non-LTE version.

Latest research from market research firm Nielsen has shown that more than half (50.4%) of US mobile subscribers now own a smartphone, following an increase from December 2011 (47.8%).

Smartphone penetration continued to dominate the key US market, with Apple being called the top manufacturer whilst Android was touted as the top platform. Nokia’s Lumia 900, released in the US last month, has continued to do well and capture consumers’ imagination, whilst the Windows Phone platform only captured 1.7% market share in Q1 2012 (even Windows Mobile, the older version of the platform, had a higher market share at 4.1%).

During Q1 2012, 48% of smartphones ran Android, whilst iOS captured 32% market share and RIM’s fledgling BlackBerry platform came in at a healthy 11.6% market share.

Following on from India and Russia as two of the key launch markets for Nokia’s 808 PureView smartphone, Mexico could be set to follow after Nokia posted the news on their official blog.

Similar to India and Russia, Nokia have not posted any news about the release date for Mexico, but both India and Russia are expected to have the device later this month meaning that Mexico may not be too far behind.

Featuring a 4.0 inch AMOLED display with Nokia ClearBlack display technology, the 808 PureView is powered by a 1.3GHz single-core CPU and feature a monster 41megapixel camera. Mexico next up for Nokia 808 PureView originally appeared on UK Mobile Review on May 8, 2012.

Nokia’s Lumia 900 has gone up for pre-order in Norway with a price of 4,290 kr. Nokia’s latest flagship will debut with retailer Elkjøp on June 1st.

It looks like the US demand that caused the delay on the UK launch has also had a knock-on effect on other countries as well, but after a long time where Nokia have struggled, it’s great to see the overwhelming demand for one of their smartphones.

I’ve spent quite a lot of time with Nokia’s new Lumia 900 and I personally love the device, especially in White. I went hands on with the device and think it has a lot of potential as a smartphone. See all our coverage through our dedicated Lumia 900 portal.

Nokia’s Lumia range of Windows Phone devices are definitely packed in a love hate relationship with their users as the beautiful design, smooth style and powerful specs have unfortunately suffered from the odd quirky bug. The company’s flagship Lumia 900 is no different, with both an LTE bug (which has been fixed) and a purple screen issue.

Nokia has announced in public that it is aware of what’s causing the problem and is planning to release a software update that will fix the issue. Nokia’s already proven it’s capable of delivering timely updates to fix issues with its devices and we’re betting that this particular bug should be fixed as soon as the update is released.

Nokia is yet to confirm a date but has said it will make an announcement when the update is ready to be released.

Internal documents showing off RIM’s new BlackBerry OS have leaked through CrackBerry, showing off the lockscreen, video editor and the OS’ cool screen sharing feature.

The OS inherits many characteristics of Nokia’s N9 MeeGo Swipetastic UI, with RIM’s OS bringing a very similar three homescreen (App launcher, Task Manager, Unified Notifications) approach and is in stark contract to RIM’s current non-finger friendly BlackBerry OS 7.

RIM have definitely thought about ensuring their new platform presents several different cool features and one of these is the motion-based lockscreen where tilting the device either displays a second row of notifications or the full notification.

BlackBerry 10 also brings an advanced video editor, courtesy of RIM’s acquisition of JayCut, as well as a feature that introduces screen sharing whilst in a message, email or video call.

This Morning i came across some exiting News on my way to Work; it looks like the unofficial Whatsapp-Client for Meego/Maemo is on it’s way to the customer.  It looks like Arie from “everythingN9.com” could try out this app as one of the first people in the world and says “the .deb will be posted soon”

In my opinion this app looks great , on everythingN9 he posted some screenshots and i think tgalal really deservs a lot of credit here, if you remember, he’s done it almost by himself so we should be really grateful for what he’ll be giving us and although the initial release does not support media-sharing and emoticons, the app still looks amazing.

Anssi Vanjoki, the man many people believe should have become Nokia CEO, was interviewed by Finnish website tietoviikko.fi and according to the translation, he finds his Nokia N9 the best smartphone and also believes that open source platforms are the way forward.

Vanjoki left Nokia when he passed over for the Nokia CEO job and some of the translation from the source quotes Vanjoki as saying:

“Microsoft is so big pockets, I do not doubt for a moment say that it would become something. As the saying goes, money can buy and get a horse.

It’s the best phone that I have ever used. Its interface is totally superior to other tarjokkaisiin over.”

Whilst it’s not a straight translation, we can read into it that he believes Nokia has the future backing of Microsoft, should the Finnish company’s woes continue and the N9 stands head and shoulders above the competition.

Nokia’s plan to combat falling sales and poor financials has been revealed: Hybrid devices. The Finnish company lost its number one global manufacturer spot to Samsung last week and former Nokia Chairman, Jorma Ollila, told the Financial Times the company was venturing out to find the answer.

What are “Hybrid” devices? One form would be the “phablet” market, where smartphone and tablets combine to form a large screen smartphone. Samsung’s Galaxy Note phablet sports a 5.3 inch display and is the most phablet on the market to date. (Galaxy Note Review)

Nokia’s “Hybrid” devices could be set to run Windows Phone 8 or even the new Windows 8 OS from Microsoft, which bring’s the Metro UI from Windows Phone to Microsoft’s redesigned desktop platform.

Nokia could even create more handsets such as the Nokia 808 PureView, which combines a smartphone with a 41 megapixel camera. Either way, it looks like Nokia have their future direction sorted out and here’s hoping that they pull it off.

Nokia is facing a class-action lawsuit by shareholders, who are displeased by the company’s transition to Windows Phone, Yahoo Finance reports. The lawsuit, filed in New York by Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP, says:

“[Nokia executives] told investors that Nokia’s conversion to a Windows platform would halt its deteriorating position in the smartphone market.

It did not.”

The lawsuit was filed today and argues that Nokia misled the shareholders over the evolution to Windows Phone and that once Nokia announced their Q1 results, the company showed that Windows Phone had not halted Nokia’s decline.

The complaint charges Nokia and certain of its officers and directors with violations of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. Nokia provides telecommunications infrastructure hardware, software, and services worldwide.

The complaint alleges that during the Class Period, defendants told investors that Nokia’s conversion to a Windows platform would halt its deteriorating position in the smartphone market. It did not. This became apparent on April 11, 2012, when Nokia disclosed that its first quarter performance would be worse than expected. Nokia expected its first quarter 2012 non-IFRS Devices & Services operating margin to fall by 3%, and projected first quarter 2012 Devices & Services net sales of €4.2 billion. It also disclosed a glitch in its newest Windows offering – the Lumia 900. Nokia had to immediately offer customers an automatic $100, making the phone essentially free.

As a result of this disclosure, the price of Nokia’s American Depositary Shares (“ADRs”) dropped over 16% in a single day.

Plaintiff seeks to recover damages on behalf of all purchasers of Nokia publicly traded securities during the Class Period (the “Class”). The plaintiff is represented by Robbins Geller, which has expertise in prosecuting investor class actions and extensive experience in actions involving financial fraud.

Nokia’s Q1 financial results saw the company announce a $1.7 billion loss, as two million Lumia handset sales failed to offset the ever shrinking developing markets and falling Symbian handset sales.

Nokia have released a statement to SlashGear:

“Nokia has become aware of the filing of a securities class action complaint naming Nokia Corporation as a defendant, filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York on May 3, 2012. Nokia is reviewing the allegations contained in the complaint and believes that they are without merit. Nokia will defend itself against the complaint.”

Orange UK have listed the Nokia Lumia 900 in the support section of their UK website, indicatings the network will launch the Lumia 900 in the near future.

The network has not provided a release date for Nokia’s latest flagship, but given the increased demand for the device in the US, if you want one you will be in for a wait.

Nokia’s current Windows Phone Lumia flagship device, the Lumia 800, and its smaller brother, the Lumia 710, are both also showing as out of stock, meaning Orange and Nokia could perhaps relaunch the entire series into the market backed by fresh marketing campaigns.

Microsoft have begun sending our “Save the Date” emails for the Windows Phone Developer Summit on June 20-21 in San Francisco.

The Redmond based company is expected to fully announce Windows Phone 8 (known as Apollo) and delve into the details and APIs that developers will need to develop for the latest interation of Microsoft’s platform.

The Apollo update is set to be released later this year alongside the Windows 8 platform and the two smartphone version of Microsoft’s latest Windows OS should see the Metro UI redesigned to support tablets, smartphones and PCs alike.

At least we now only have a few weeks to go until Microsoft could reveal all.

Quick one from me; Nokia have announced that alongside the launch of the 808 PureView earlier today, they have extended their partnership with Carl Zeiss which is good news for Nokia devices going forward.

The partnership brings Carl Zeiss’ impressive camera technology and knowhow to Nokia’s smartphones and there had been thoughts of the partnership becoming non-exclusive, but both companies are happy to continue working together.

Jo Harlow, Nokia’s Head of Smart Devices, said:

“Carl Zeiss was a crucial partner in the creation of the first PureView experience,” said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices. “The benefits of our ongoing collaboration will be more PureView innovation and further advancements in smartphone imaging in the coming months and years.”

The Nokia 808 PureView is the latest in imaging wonders that the two companies have combined to deliver, with previous imaging smartphone kings including the Nokia N8 (with its 12 megapixel camera and Xenon flash), Nokia N86 (with unique dual-slide design) and Nokia N82 (king of Xenon).
