Apple’s new iPhone is due later this year and as with everything prior to an event, the rumours keep coming and keep growing.

Whilst this is another rumour, at least until we hear it from Apple’s CEO himself, reports suggest that Steve Jobs ‘had a hand’ in the creation of the next new iPhone.

Rumours about the new iPhone has been rife with everything from the size, display and materials used to build it – changing from one moment to another.

However, Steve Jobs took sick leave from Apple in January 2011 but several broadsheets have put their name behind the backing that Jobs had “worked closely on the redesigned [smart]phone before his death [last] October.” Bloomberg in addition to The Wall Street Journal and Reuters ‘back-up’ the claims.

“Bloomberg reports that one of the people – (presumably “familiar with this order”) – hinted that it is believed that Jobs himself had “worked closely on the redesigned [smart]phone before his death [last] October.

Apple has been working on the new device since before the current iPhone 4S model was introduced last October, said one person with knowledge of the project. Jobs, who had gone on medical leave from Apple starting last January, played a key role in developing the phone, this person said.”

If you are still on the fence about upgrading to a new iPhone then this offer may help to make the decision for you.

Sprint will be offering a minimum of $100 trade-in towards the purchase of a new iPhone 4S when you activate a new line of service.

The offer is due to start today 18 May 2012 and may prove an incentive for those customers who are disillusioned with their networks or want a change of network to Sprint.

Samsung’s Galaxy S III flagship was almost certain to continue the success of its predecessor but if early pre order figures are accurate, the Galaxy SIII could blow even the stiffest competition out of the water. An unnamed Samsung official is quoted in the Korea Times as saying that Samsung’s latest smash hit has amassed nearly 9 million preorders across 100 carriers around the world.

Samsung’s Galaxy SII, which won the prestigious “Phone of the Year” award last year, took ten months to ship 20 million units, whilst the latest one has reached that milestone in two weeks since its announcement. Whilst the Galaxy SII figures counted shipments (and excess stock in warehouses, distributors etc), the Galaxy SIII figures count pre-orders which are almost as good as actual sales figures.

The key thing here is that these Galaxy SIII figures Do not include Apple’s home market in the USA, which also happens to be one of the biggest markets globally and key to any manufacturer’s success. Whichever way you look at it, Samsung have another smash hit on their hands and the competition definitely have something to worry about.

Latest research shows Apple holds 7.9% of the total global mobile phone market, sitting in third place behind Samsung and Nokia.

Samsung may be reaping the rewards from its multiple Galaxy product ranges, but Apple is showing that the world can be dominated with just a few products. Latest research from Gartner shows that Apple has gained 7.9% market share of the entire global phone sales market, despite only have three iPhones on sale. The research firmly pegs Apple in third place behind Nokia and Samsung.

Total sales of mobile phones are down on last year, but smartphones continue to rise as more people choose smartphones over featurephones. Gartner also warns that whilst Apple’s iOS (and Windows Phone) offer different experiences, devices running on the Android platform would struggle to differentiate going forward with the main differential being price, especially in the mid-range.

“This is particularly true for smartphones based on the Android OS, where a strong commoditization trend is at work and most players are finding it hard to break the mould.”

Apple have obviously not been happy with the jail breaking community and today surprises were in store for users of its U.S. appstore and iTunes store.

On searching through Apple’s iTunes music store for the word jailbreak and you are greeted with song titles with the name jailbreak censored as seen below.

So far this is only happening in the states and it is not known whether this will come to the UK or other international stores.

I think artists will be most unhappy to see their song titles censored in such a manner as will developers who want to ‘coin-in’ on the term jailbreak. Is this only the beginning or will we see the censorship deepen?

Apple has not commented on their reasons for censoring what is after all legitimate titles in iTunes and the AppStore.

Apple earlier persued a claim for the domain iPhone5.com The squatters registered the name in 2008 and its content was carefully noted as nor endorsed, sponsored, nor otherwise affiliated with Apple’.

The attorneys in Cupertino successfully filed a complaint and this was upheld with the World Intellectual Property Organization.

Domain squatters are not new to the internet but have become more prevalent of late, buying up hundreds or more of domains that may potentially be wanted by high-profile companies in the future. The squatters hopes to make profit by selling some domains or inadvertently getting web hits via this method are being increasingly thwarted as Registars are forced to release the name to the branded counterparts.

Latest reports suggest that Apple’s new iPhone 6 could arrive with a 4-inch display.

Apple has kept the same 3.5 screen though out its iPhone family and some would say that it is time for a change. Larger smartphones are arriving everyday with the likes of HTC One series, Samsung Galaxy SIII and Nokia’s new windows phone, the Lumia 900.

The report from the Wall Street Journal cites sources who say Apple has placed the new sized screen under order. A 4-inch screen from Apple would still be undersized in comparison with the 4.7 inch of the HTC One X and Samsung’s Galaxy S3 at 4.8-inch.

Apple has shown its displeasure at the iPhone 4S class-action suite. Apple is accused of misrepresentation of Siri’s capabilities.

However, iPhone 4S users who have joined in the class-action suit were accused of ‘not availing themselves of Apple’s 30-day return policy or one-year warranty’.

Apple asks for dismissal of the case on the grounds:

“Tellingly, although Plaintiffs claim they became dissatisfied with Siri’s performance “soon after” purchasing their iPhones, they made no attempt to avail themselves of Apple’s 30-day return policy or one-year warranty—which remains in effect. Instead, they seek to take an alleged personal grievance about the purported performance of a popular product and turn it into a nationwide class action under California’s consumer protection statutes. The Complaint does not come close to meeting the heavy burden necessary to sustain such claims” Apple Motion to Dismiss

In addition Apple’s lawyers point to the ‘beta’ branding and that the apparent failure of Siri on specific issues were never promised.

Latest research from ABI Research shows that the majority of users spend little to nothing on mobile apps, with more than 70% of users spending less than $7.50 per month. The research also found that the top 3% of spenders accounted for nearly 20% of all revenue generated.

“The median amount among the consumers who spend money on apps is much lower than the average, just $7.50 per month,” senior analyst Aapo Markkanen said. “This reflects the disproportionate role of big spenders as a revenue source.”

The research also found that the apps that generated the most revenue were often utility apps targetted at business professionals or iOS games with in-app purchases, as Apple discovered.

Whilst the research concerns the US market, it can be applied to app revenue generation globally and although not accurate, it can provide an indication of app revenues worldwide.

Here’s the full press release.

3% of Users Account for One-Fifth of All Money Spent on Mobile Apps

LONDON – May 14, 2012
?According to a US consumer survey conducted by ABI Research, about two-thirds of app users have spent money on an application on at least one occasion. Among these paying users, the mean spend was $14 per month. Behind the seemingly high average amount there are, however, some striking findings.

Senior analyst Aapo Markkanen explains, “The median amount among the consumers who spend money on apps is much lower than the average, just $7.50 per month. This reflects the disproportionate role of big spenders as a revenue source. The highest-spending 3% of all app users account for nearly 20% of the total spend, while over 70% spends either nothing or very little.”

The numbers also reflect certain trends in different app categories. Thus far, the releases that have best succeeded in making money have typically been utility apps often used for business purposes, or iOS games monetized through strings of in-app purchases. In both cases the money comes from a remarkably small base of customers. Is there anything developers can do to boost the conversion rate from free to premium?

Markkanen has two recommendations. “First, don’t get obsessed by mobile and apps, but remember also the web,” he adds. “Most of the successful app concepts either support, or are supported by, a web component. Second, see your product through a long-term lens, asking yourself what could convince your customers to still engage with the app in two years’ time. Evernote, for example, has excelled at both. It has skillfully combined the web and the mobile, and at the same time it has also managed to become a habit for many of its users. It demonstrates that the longer its customers stick around with a free version of an app, the likelier they’re going to convert to its premium version.”

The world’s largest mobile network by subscribers, China Mobile, announced today that it was in talks with Apple to bring Apple’s immensely popular iPhone to the Chinese telecoms carrier.

China Mobile is the only Chinese network not to carry the iPhone as the 3G frequency being used by the network is not currently supported by Apple’s iPhone.

“We’ve been actively talking to Apple on how we can cooperate,” China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua, who assumed the post in March, told a shareholders meeting. “I can’t give you too many details, but I’d like to repeat that both sides do hope to boost our cooperation,” Xi added after the meeting.

Xi also revealed that China Mobile has an ambitious global expansion plan, that could see it offer mobile services in the USA. China Mobile also said that the number of subscribers grew to 667.20 million in March, which is more than twice the entire population of the USA and Xi said:

“We want to become a more global company. For that to happen, we are interested in tapping other markets such as Hong Kong and the United States,” Xi said.

“We have applied to the United States for a license, but it’s not been rejected yet. Rather, it’s undergoing the relevant procedure. We hope the U.S. government will give us their approval soon for us to expand our services there.”

Last year Apple filed a law-suit against some HTC phones, now it seems to carry out.

Earlier today i heard that the HTC One X and the HTC Evo 4G LTE are being delayed in the US because of Apple’s law-suit angainst them in December 2011, where apple claimed HTC would use some of their patents in those Adroid based devices .

HTC confirmed those rumors earlier today as i quote : ”The U.S. availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order,”

“We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval.”

Last Year Apple stated infront of the ITC that HTC infrigned their patents of Data detection, the ITC ruled in Apple’s favour, and now it seems they stopped the import of HTC devices.

Apple could be planning an iCloud-based photo sharing community, with users able to comment on cloud-stored photos; is Apple set to take on Instagram and Facebook?

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple could be set to move into a new cloud-based era, with new services and features planned for its iCloud service. One of these features is said to be a new photo sharing service.

One of the best and potentially most lucrative aspects of the new service for the company is the ability to add comments to images stored in the cloud. This would open up a whole new community for Apple, allowing them to take on the likes of Instagram (and Facebook who purchased them), where users comment on pictures.

Other potential services in the update to iCloud, which is expected to land at WWDC in June, could include an update to personal syncing, with videos, notes and reminders all set to sync across multiple devices. Apple is expected to unveil all at WWDC in just a few weeks, where the company will also unveil the latest version of their mobile OS, iOS 6.

Apple rebrands the new iPad, changing it to WiFi + cellular following adverse consumer reaction around the world over the company's use of the WiFi + 4G branding.

Apple has faced considerable pressure from consumer groups globally over the use of 4G branding on non-US versions of its new iPad. The world’s largest technology company had included the use of 4G in promotional and packaging material on the international version of the new iPad despite not supporting all LTE frequencies. As such, users in Australia could not use the LTE connectivity despite a fully working LTE network.

Australia’s authorities had already begun action against Apple and they were followed by the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK. Apple seems to have succumbed to the regulatory pressure around the world and has begun renaming the iPad from WiFi + 4G to WiFi + cellular, including in the USA where the iPad does support LTE.

Apple has a history of falling foul of the authorities and it’s unclear whether the action taken to rebrand the iPad will deter any potential regulatory action. The UK’s ASA has the ability to issue action post haste meaning Apple could still be in trouble in the UK.

It’s not often we cover non-mobile related news here on UKMobileReview but this one clearly shows the gains that Apple has received through its domination of the mobile industry.

Apple’s MacBooks, which epitomise style and substance in the desktop computing market but come with a high price tag, have not featured a top of the range display like the company’s mobile devices. he latest version of the company’s OSX Lion operating system includes updated 1,024 x 1,024 icons which should see Apple launch a ultra-high-res display on their Macbooks later this year.

A single share of Apple costs more than one iPad and the company is the most valuable technology company in the world. Apple’s shares are expected to hit the $2,000 mark by 2015, and if the Retina Display comes to the Macbook alongside other expected upgrades such as a thin portable form factor, Apple’s shares will continue to rise and rise.

Apple’s patent lawsuit fight with Samsung took a fresh twist today with Cupertino-based Apple accusing the Korean manufacturer of destroying crucial evidence in their own going drama.Network World reports that the evidence was documentation that Samsung had been ordered to hand over to Apple.

Apple said Samsung’s actions amounted to a Spoliation of evidence and that Samsung destroyed “vast quantities of relevant evidence in blatant disregard of its duty to preserve all such evidence.” Network World claim to have gained a copy of Apple’s motion, which was filed with the Northern District Court of California on May 1st.

According to the report, Apple claim that Samsung witnesses intentionally produced less documents than required under the original court ruling and Apple apparently said in the motion:

“Samsung’s ad hoc, unmonitored email ‘preservation’ methods have resulted in the irretrievable loss of unknown volumes of relevant emails. For example, Judge Grewal recently compelled the deposition of Won Pyo Hong, the head of Samsung’s Product Strategy Team, in part due to an email in which Dr.Hong ‘directly orders side-by-side comparisons of Apple and Samsung products for design presentations.’

“Apple and the Court cannot possibly know how many more emails Dr. Hong sent or received that would have supported Apple’s claims that Samsung copied Apple products had they not been deleted,” Apple continued.

The court is planning a hearing on June 7th to discuss Apple’s allegations but has given Samsung until May 15th to respond to the claims. Samsung has already asked for an extension due to time constraints, which Apple has already said shouldn’t be given. This one looks set to go all the way and we’ll bring you the news as it breaks!

Apple looks set to unveil their next iPhone in around four months, but latest reports courtesy of Apple watcher iMore suggest that the Cupertino-based company is still mulling over the design of the next iPhone.

We’ve seen the smaller dock connector before, but some of the undecided specs and parts of the device include the screen size and aspect ratio as well as the materials used to build the device.

Apple’s next iPhone is still expected to launch in and around October meaning the company will need to make the decisions quickly to give its manufacturing partners enough time to stretch the initial product launch across multiple countries.

Apple looks set to drop Google and make the move to its own maps application. It is thought that the new maps will be the clinching feature of the new OS.

We are not yet sure how the maps can bring a bigger newer New touch to Apple’s iOS 6 after the launch of Siri but it is something we look forward to where Apple can take this.

Apple has purchased Placebase, C3 Technologies and Poly 9 – the three combined offers Apple the technology and software to bring forth a unique and captivating experience. The app is said to look much different to its present guise but we do not imagine that it will be too far different that novice users will not be able to use it. Apple has been known for their simple UI and it is likely they will not want to counteract that position when ease of use is part of its known capabilities.

Apple acquired C3 technology back in October 2011 and it is known for its 3D mapping solutions, street-level photography as well as user-generated images.

You will be familiar with C3 technology if you use Nokia Maps as it plays a part in their inbuilt technology and was part of Nokia Ovi Maps.

We have not clarified what licences Nokia has with Apple for the use of C3 technology.

Anyone who follows technology stocks knows that Apple are pretty much the best bet out there. Apple’s stock has rose by absolutely phenomenal amounts over the last few years, reaching a high of $600 recently.

Independent analyst Andy M. Zaky, has claimed that the company’s stock price will rise to $2,000 by the end of 2015. Zaky has a history of accurately reporting on Apple stock for several years and Fortune report that his estimates over the past four years have been more accurate than the average Wall Street analyst.

Zaky projects that Apple will ship 55 million iPhones in Q1 2013, 80 million in Q1 2014 and 110 million in Q1 2015. Zaky has issued a warning of sorts that Apple needs to innovate past 2015 otherwise its stock could become stagnated and begin to fall.

“I’m fairly confident about these numbers,” Zaky said. ge of Apple and the peak growth year,” he said. “After 2015, growth will stall and Apple will become a mature company — at least for this era.”

This is absolutely hilarious but Apple’s straight-talking Siri voice recognition service on the iPhone 4S has taken to advising users that the best cellphone ever is in fact, Nokia’s Windows Phone flagship Lumia 900 smartphone.

Siri works by retrieving information from analytical engine Wolfram Alpha and it seems like top customer reviews for the Lumia 900 have finally begun to hit home in the most bizarre of circumstances.

We’ve tested it just now and it works on our iPhone 4S which is in the UK. If you want to show this off or just wind people up, get them to ask Siri the following question:

What is the best cellphone ever?

The results are excellent and definitely hilarious!

Yet another iPad mini rumour leaks, with the latest one bringing news of a release date as well as a supposed price tag. The report claims that Apple will debut the smaller version of its popular tablet in October and will launch in the US for between $200 and $250.

The latest report comes via Apple watcher iMore, who have accurately reported information about unannounced Apple products in the past and are saying the mini iPad will launch with a 7-8inch display (previous reports suggest 7.85 inches as the display size) whilst keeping the 2,048 x 1,536 pixels resolution of the new iPad.

According to recent reports Apple has offered Proview !00 million yuan ($16M U.S.) to end the dispute over the use of the iPad name.

However, it is reported that Proview has rejected the offer. Officials at the company are said to be seeking a massive $400M U.S. to allow Apple to acquire the right to the iPad name. Apparently the company is seeking the sum for creditors, eight of which are Chinese banks.

The company originally employed 18,000 people at the heights of its career.

Proview is relying on the Chinese courts to aid in its demands as an attempted lawsuit in California, was tossed out by a Santa Clara County Judge.

Google’s Play Store, formerly known as the Android Market, has crossed the 15 billion downloads milestone. Google confirmed to TechCrunch that they had crossed the milestone a few weeks ago whilst Apple’s App Store crossed the milestone in July 2011 and recently reached 25 billion downloads.

Both app marketplaces look set to continue their head to head race but Apple’s App Store, despite more downloads (1.25 billion versus 1 billion) looks to be slowing, with downloads falling 30% in March. Google’s Play Store currently has more than 500,000 apps whilst the App Store has crossed the 600,000 milestone.

Apple has released an update to its iOS to 5.1.1.

The new update is available for the iPad, iPod touch an the iPhone. The update to iOS 5.1.1.1 is mostly bug fixes for AirPlay and a few others.

However, as always there is the underlying event of jailbroken devices and this is seen as perhaps another of Apple’s efforts to plug the hole that hackers are determined to find.

What differences have you found since the update?

Latest research from market research firm Nielsen has shown that more than half (50.4%) of US mobile subscribers now own a smartphone, following an increase from December 2011 (47.8%).

Smartphone penetration continued to dominate the key US market, with Apple being called the top manufacturer whilst Android was touted as the top platform. Nokia’s Lumia 900, released in the US last month, has continued to do well and capture consumers’ imagination, whilst the Windows Phone platform only captured 1.7% market share in Q1 2012 (even Windows Mobile, the older version of the platform, had a higher market share at 4.1%).

During Q1 2012, 48% of smartphones ran Android, whilst iOS captured 32% market share and RIM’s fledgling BlackBerry platform came in at a healthy 11.6% market share.

The latest Samsung devices were really amazing and the hype about the Galaxy S3 was unbelievable, that mirrors now in the numbers that have been released today: samsung surpasses apple with 2 percent . So that now Samsung leads in Germany with 24% , second is Apple with 22% , Nokia , who were leading in 2010 with 41%, are now on third place with 21,6% , last but not least is RIM with 2,8% .

Overall Smartphones are dominant in Germany, 18 million Smartphones stand against 8 million “classic” cellphones.

I wonder how this all will change in the next few years, how far nokia will drop , if apple can make it back to the top , or if a new challenger will appear, but those questions will be answered in the Future.

Wondering what Apple will be calling the next generation of its iPhone smartphone? Until the launch of the New iPad earlier this year, you’d have thought it would go with the iPhone 5, but it could be called the New iPhone.

Either way, Apple has attempted to seize control of iPhone5.com, claiming that the web domain infringes on Apple’s intellectual property regarding the name of its smartphone. The website in question operates a forum which speculates on rumours of the “iPhone 5” and launched in October 2010.

Apple has filed a claim with the World Intellectual Property Organisation seeking to gain control of the domain and the WIPO is assessing the claim now; given the number of copyrights and patents Apple holds over the iPhone features, style and name, it’s only a matter of time before Apple gets its wish and another website falls at the hands of a big technology giant.

There is no denying that mobile gaming is most definitely on the up and a new study has found that between iOS and Android, mobile gaming is worth up to five times more on Apple’s iPhone versus the spate of Android devices.

The study was conducted by research firm Newzoo, who looked at data from iOS and Android and conducted a survey amongst 17,000 people. Some of the data found by the company includes 28% of smartphone gaming takes place on an iPhone whilst 60% of tablet gaming takes place on an iPad. The most interesting fact is that 91% of all mobile gaming revenue comes from in-app purchases whilst only 9% comes from the actual cost of the game.

Newzoo CEO, Peter Warmam, attributes the success of iOS to the in-app purchase experience:

When analyzing Apple’s successful monetization, there is one dominant factor outside of differences in audience demographics and preferences: Apple requires users to connect their credit card information directly to their account, thus creating a seamless purchase experience.”

It appears that Apple never tires of going to court and today adds another suit to its name.

The iPhone 4S, on which we are insistent to have known as the iPhone 5 was the iPhone 5 that never was. At a half way mark the 4S brought new things to Apple, including Siri.

However, the matter of the iPhone 5 will not go away. We are as yet unsure what the new iPhone will be called. Will it be the ‘new iPhone’, iPhone 5 or iPhone 6? Either way, Apple is making sure that it owns the domain that accompanies iPhone 5.

Today, Apple filed a claim for the domain iphone5.com with the World Intellectural Property Organisation (WIPO).

The great thing about this game is that there are no in-app purchases so the game is played on your skill alone and not any ‘cheat buy-in’ facilities.

Take a look at the game in action. At the time of writing the game is available for $0.99

The Apple iPad brought new innovation and technology to the world of tablets. However, as with any piece of technology, ideas improve, technology moves on, or someone along the line does something a little bit different or even better.

Take a look at SwipeSelection. It improves on Apple’s default keyboard improving your editing and text selection. It is simple to use and will be available for free when it arrives on the Cydia MarketPlace. Your iPad will need to have been jailbroken for you to be able to take advantage of this facility.

Take a look and see how SwipeSelection works on Apple’s iPad.

Apple’s next iPhone has leaked yet again, this time on the day that Samsung unveil its competitor, the Galaxy SIII smartphone (our live coverage of that event is here.)

The latest leak of the new iPhone brings us three pieces of interesting news, the first being the device will feature a 4-inch display, the second confirming it will be thinner and the third surfacing news of a redesigned smaller dock connector.

We’ve heard of the large display before and more recently, the thinner profile was leaked and today those two rumours (which are seeming more and more likely) are joined by the smaller dock connector, which is sure to annoy accessory manufacturers everywhere.
