Apple’s new iPhone is due later this year and as with everything prior to an event, the rumours keep coming and keep growing.

Whilst this is another rumour, at least until we hear it from Apple’s CEO himself, reports suggest that Steve Jobs ‘had a hand’ in the creation of the next new iPhone.

Rumours about the new iPhone has been rife with everything from the size, display and materials used to build it – changing from one moment to another.

However, Steve Jobs took sick leave from Apple in January 2011 but several broadsheets have put their name behind the backing that Jobs had “worked closely on the redesigned [smart]phone before his death [last] October.” Bloomberg in addition to The Wall Street Journal and Reuters ‘back-up’ the claims.

“Bloomberg reports that one of the people – (presumably “familiar with this order”) – hinted that it is believed that Jobs himself had “worked closely on the redesigned [smart]phone before his death [last] October.

Apple has been working on the new device since before the current iPhone 4S model was introduced last October, said one person with knowledge of the project. Jobs, who had gone on medical leave from Apple starting last January, played a key role in developing the phone, this person said.”

Rumours of an LG quad-core smartphone took on more substance today with an image leak.

The quad-core LS970 is reported to feature a 13 megapixel camera, 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor and a huge 2GB of RAM.

The image from BriefMobile shows the LG smartphone revealing the back cover and the externals with battery exposed.

The LS970 is due for release nearer the end of the year so it is likely we will know much more about it as time goes on.

If you are still on the fence about upgrading to a new iPhone then this offer may help to make the decision for you.

Sprint will be offering a minimum of $100 trade-in towards the purchase of a new iPhone 4S when you activate a new line of service.

The offer is due to start today 18 May 2012 and may prove an incentive for those customers who are disillusioned with their networks or want a change of network to Sprint.

However, the offer is open to new and existing customers but it does mean you have to take out a new 24 month commitment.

The offer ends on 30 June 2012.

Samsung’s Galaxy S III flagship was almost certain to continue the success of its predecessor but if early pre order figures are accurate, the Galaxy SIII could blow even the stiffest competition out of the water. An unnamed Samsung official is quoted in the Korea Times as saying that Samsung’s latest smash hit has amassed nearly 9 million preorders across 100 carriers around the world.

Samsung’s Galaxy SII, which won the prestigious “Phone of the Year” award last year, took ten months to ship 20 million units, whilst the latest one has reached that milestone in two weeks since its announcement. Whilst the Galaxy SII figures counted shipments (and excess stock in warehouses, distributors etc), the Galaxy SIII figures count pre-orders which are almost as good as actual sales figures.

The key thing here is that these Galaxy SIII figures Do not include Apple’s home market in the USA, which also happens to be one of the biggest markets globally and key to any manufacturer’s success. Whichever way you look at it, Samsung have another smash hit on their hands and the competition definitely have something to worry about.

The inofficial whatsapp client for Meego was finally released yesterday.

It rushed trough social media like a fire trough dry wood, the inoffical whatsapp client “Wazapp” for MeeGo devices was released yesterday by its creator Tarek Galal. At the Moment it’s in beta-state and does not support image/music/location etc sharing , but that will be fixed in the future, it also contains some bugs but so far i have found it working flawlessly. I will post a review of it as soon as i used it a few days with screenshots and everything .

Ever wondered when the world of forensic analysis, i.e. all that fancy stuff from CSI (and other such TV programs) would become more “mobile”? Maybe you haven’t but RIM’s latest patent application should get you talking.

Waterloo based RIM have applied for a patent outlining an “apparatus” connected to a portable electronic device (think phone or tablet) that would shine light on nearby objects, take photographs and display results including potential contamination.

Why have they applied for the patent? It’s either a wacky and ingenious way to get the BlackBerry platform into more government departments or just a wild guess at something that could be used in the future. Either way, it doesn’t look like it’ll be a real tangible service/product soon (or maybe it will, who knows?)

This one is for all our followers Down Under; if you’ve been waiting on tenderhooks for news of Nokia’s Lumia 610 and 900 in your territory then you’re in luck as it looks like both devices will land in June.

The Lumia 900 is set to be an Optus exclusive (for now at least), and will cost $0 upfront alongside a $59 contract over 24 months. Not keen to be tied down? Shell out $699 and the device will be yours free of all strings. However, it’s worth noting that despite a fully functional LTE network, the Lumia 900 for Optus will be HSPA+ only and not LTE compatible.

The Lumia 610 looks set to land in June, initially as a ‘Boost Mobile’ exclusive until it lands on Vodafone Australia in July. The Lumia 610 looks set to be prepaid only and not available on pay monthly contracts but its initial $329 price tag should could down in price when Vodafone launch the model.

We’ll bring you more details when we have them but for now, why not check out our hands on photo galleries with the Lumia 900 in amazing white.

Latest research shows Apple holds 7.9% of the total global mobile phone market, sitting in third place behind Samsung and Nokia.

Samsung may be reaping the rewards from its multiple Galaxy product ranges, but Apple is showing that the world can be dominated with just a few products. Latest research from Gartner shows that Apple has gained 7.9% market share of the entire global phone sales market, despite only have three iPhones on sale. The research firmly pegs Apple in third place behind Nokia and Samsung.

Total sales of mobile phones are down on last year, but smartphones continue to rise as more people choose smartphones over featurephones. Gartner also warns that whilst Apple’s iOS (and Windows Phone) offer different experiences, devices running on the Android platform would struggle to differentiate going forward with the main differential being price, especially in the mid-range.

“This is particularly true for smartphones based on the Android OS, where a strong commoditization trend is at work and most players are finding it hard to break the mould.”

BlackBerry & OS Approved by CESG for Government Use

Slough - London, UK – May 17, 2012 – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced that CESG, the National Technical Authority for Information Assurance in the UK, has approved the BlackBerry® 7 operating system for government use. The approval enables public sector workers to utilise the enhanced performance and rich functionality of the latest BlackBerry smartphones available in the UK.

The BlackBerry® Enterprise Solution from RIM is the only mobile solution approved by CESG to protect material classified up to and including ‘Restricted’.

Stephen Bates, UK Managing Director, RIM, said: “We’re pleased to see CESG taking such positive steps to help ensure UK government workers have access to the latest suite of BlackBerry 7 smartphones. Thanks in part to our industry leading security credentials, BlackBerry smartphones are widely deployed in UK public sector organisations including the Ministry of Defence (MoD), most of Central Government and more than half of the UK’s police forces, NHS and local government organisations. BlackBerry smartphones are enabling greater efficiencies and improved citizen service by providing access to data such as patient records, the Police National Computer and other government systems at the point of need.”

Using the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution has led to striking savings and improved citizen service across many public sector bodies, including UK police forces who are using BlackBerry smartphones to increase productivity amongst officers and to enable them to spend more time on the streets and less time in the station.

BlackBerry smartphones currently available in the UK and covered by the new approval from CESG include the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900, BlackBerry Bold 9790, BlackBerry® Torch™ 9810, BlackBerry Torch 9860, BlackBerry® Curve™ 9360 and BlackBerry Curve 9380.

Japanese commerce giant Rakuten leads a $100m funding round in the pin-an-image application that is Pinterest. Rakuten already own the ebook company Kobo and its ebook eReaders.

Hiroshi Mikitani, chief executive of Rakuten had this to say about social discovered and how this helps to increase the potential to commerce and the development of images over text on the internet.

We talked about how we can help each other and we can help their presence in Japan which is one of the major markets in the internet industry

Are Rakuten sites already using the “Pin it” badge?
Not at this moment but we are going to.

Pinterest is more targeted. They use beautiful graphics very effectively to create interest circles. They are extremely good at it. Because of that, the traffic coming from Pinterest probably will have a very high conversion rate. That is why I think they are very good at this discovery shopping.

Apple have obviously not been happy with the jail breaking community and today surprises were in store for users of its U.S. appstore and iTunes store.

On searching through Apple’s iTunes music store for the word jailbreak and you are greeted with song titles with the name jailbreak censored as seen below.

So far this is only happening in the states and it is not known whether this will come to the UK or other international stores.

I think artists will be most unhappy to see their song titles censored in such a manner as will developers who want to ‘coin-in’ on the term jailbreak. Is this only the beginning or will we see the censorship deepen?

Apple has not commented on their reasons for censoring what is after all legitimate titles in iTunes and the AppStore.

Apple earlier persued a claim for the domain iPhone5.com The squatters registered the name in 2008 and its content was carefully noted as nor endorsed, sponsored, nor otherwise affiliated with Apple’.

The attorneys in Cupertino successfully filed a complaint and this was upheld with the World Intellectual Property Organization.

Domain squatters are not new to the internet but have become more prevalent of late, buying up hundreds or more of domains that may potentially be wanted by high-profile companies in the future. The squatters hopes to make profit by selling some domains or inadvertently getting web hits via this method are being increasingly thwarted as Registars are forced to release the name to the branded counterparts.

Nokia’s Lumia 710 “budget” Windows Phone device definitely looks likely to fulfill Nokia’s aim of bringing Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS to more people.

The Lumia 710 incorporates a 3.7 inch display with Nokia’s ClearBlack display technology alongside a 5 megapixel camera with HD video capture and is powered by a 1.4GHz processor, delivering the superfast Windows Phone experience.

The Lumia 710 has definitely done well in the UK, but what about the US, where Nokia is pining to be a force yet again? According to some user feedback, the Lumia 710 is definitely exceeding expectations yet again.

Nokia Conversations, Nokia’s official blog, have posted up a selection of user reviews for the Lumia 710, taken from Amazon.

Without listing all they’ve written (we really recommend you check it out as the reviews are really good), here’s some of the key highlights:

Andrew: loves how it integrates his online life into the platform.

Mimo: loves the Lumia 710′s value, Facebook integration and Nokia Drive.

Akash: a solid, stable and fast Windows Phone device.

You may have read yesterday that HTC’s One X and EVO 4G LTE had been stopped from entering the US after Apple succeeded in proving the device infringed on a patent owned by the company.

The Verge reports that to overcome this issue, HTC has developed a different ROM for both devices, which specifically doesn’t feature the data tapping feature that was the cause of the ITC decision to ban sales of those smartphones in the US. The data tapping feature, which has been patented by Apple, allows you to click on a number, email address or web link and show a menu of options.

Clicking on a web URL on the US versions of these two smartphones will result in the link being opened in the default app (i.e. default browser), without displaying the pop up links menu. To change the app that it opens in, you have to go the Settings Menu and choose the default app inside the ‘App Associations’ menu, which is not present on the international version of these devices.

HTC’s Sense UI, which runs on the companies HTC One Series including the One X and One S, has come under fire from XDA Developers, who feel that the method of implementing multitasking on the devices.

The community feels that HTC’s implementation of multitasking on Sense 4.0 has led to apps being killed off and then not returning to their last-used state when being reopened.

Here’s what HTC had to say about it:

“HTC is aware of some questions in the enthusiast community about how the HTC One X handles multitasking and memory management for background apps. We value the community’s input and are always looking for ways to enhance customers’ experience with our devices. That said, multitasking is operating normally according to our custom memory management specifications which balance core ICS features with a consistent HTC Sense experience“.

As part of their Sense UI, HTC is applying their own memory management in order to “optimise” the user experience. Whilst it may be okay for most users, there are power users who will be disappointed by HTC’s implementation. If that’s you, then fear no more as you can root your One X and tweak/apply a custom ROM.

Samsung’s recently announced Olympic phone the Galaxy SIII may not be the only official smartphone for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

A report uncovers a new patent filed by the Korean owners for a handful of new titles. The report suggest they could be new devices registered for the future. Names include the Galaxy Lunge, Galaxy Forge, Galaxy Wield, Galaxy Mission, Galaxy Rivet and the Galaxy Victory.

It is likely the the Galaxy Victory and the Galaxy Lung may have an Olympic tie-in. Samsung will be releasing special editions of the Samsung Galaxy SIII with exclusive Olympic content for certain contenders who are taking part in the Olympics.

The Olympics are not too far away so we would expect that any further news on new devices would not be too long in coming forth. We at UK Mobile Review can certainly see a case for the traditional RED or Samsung’s love of Fuscia to make an appearance or even the possibility of colours to match the olympic circle of rings.

Nokia today announced a new series of phones to compliment their S40 series. The new 110 and 112 will feature a new update to Nokia’s S40, bringing in the 6th edition of the os.

Nokia Press Release

Nokia 110 and Nokia 112 offer Facebook, Twitter, world-class EA games and access to thousands of apps from the Nokia Store

Karachi, Pakistan – Nokia has today unveiled two new mobile phone models as it continues to accelerate its strategy to connect the next billion consumers to information and the internet. The Nokia 110 and Nokia 112 have been designed to appeal to young, urban consumers who want to experience a fast, affordable online experience.

Both devices are perfect for communicating across Facebook, Twitter and social media networks. The internet experience is also smooth thanks to the Nokia Browser. This innovative technology allows users to consume less data by up to 90%, by compressing websites in the cloud. Both devices offer direct access to Facebook and Twitter from their home screens. TheNokia 112 also features preloaded eBuddy instant messaging service right out of the box, so users can use popular chat services to keep conversations going 24/7.

In common with other Nokia mobile phones, consumers can choose from thousands of apps to download on the Nokia Store. With the upgraded camera, they can now customize their contacts with pictures, and share them with friends via social networks and Bluetooth.

“Today’s mobile phone users want a quick internet experience that allows them to discover great content and share it with their friends – but without being held back by high data costs,” said Mary T. McDowell, executive vice president, Mobile Phones, Nokia. “The new Nokia 110 and Nokia 112 devices combine browsing, social media, apps, world-class entertainment and long battery life to create a great package for young, urban consumers who want to do it all.”

Perfect for all-day and all-night entertainment
The devices all feature a generous 1.8″ display optimized for a great gaming experience. In the coming months, the Nokia 110 and Nokia 112 will bring free* 40 key EA Games, valued at EUR 75 if bought separately, including well known titles like Tetris®, Bejeweled®, Need for Speed(TM) The Run, Monopoly Here & Now, and SimCity(TM) Deluxe. Consumers will be able to easily access the content by clicking on the Games Gift EA icon on their home screen which will take them to the Nokia Store to download the games. Once they have accessed the offering, they will have 60 days to download the games of their choice, keeping the games forever.

Both new phones offer an improved VGA camera for sharp and clear pictures with support for up to 32GB of external memory, enough for more than 6000+ songs or 90,000 pictures. Consumers can tune into their favorite radio stations and share their favorite songs with friends over Bluetooth.
Latest reports suggest that Apple’s new iPhone 6 could arrive with a 4-inch display.

Apple has kept the same 3.5 screen though out its iPhone family and some would say that it is time for a change. Larger smartphones are arriving everyday with the likes of HTC One series, Samsung Galaxy SIII and Nokia’s new windows phone, the Lumia 900.

The report from the Wall Street Journal cites sources who say Apple has placed the new sized screen under order. A 4-inch screen from Apple would still be undersized in comparison with the 4.7 inch of the HTC One X and Samsung’s Galaxy S3 at 4.8-inch.

Here we have an unboxing of the forthcoming Galaxy S3.
Please do note that the video is not in English but it gives you an idea of the packing of the Galaxy S3 will contain and how it matches up to the other smartphones on offer. I am rather envious of all the devices the reviewer has on hand but it does make a lovely line-up.

Apple has shown its displeasure at the iPhone 4S class-action suite. Apple is accused of misrepresentation of Siri’s capabilities.

However, iPhone 4S users who have joined in the class-action suit were accused of ‘not availing themselves of Apple’s 30-day return policy or one-year warranty’.

Apple asks for dismissal of the case on the grounds:

“Tellingly, although Plaintiffs claim they became dissatisfied with Siri’s performance “soon after” purchasing their iPhones, they made no attempt to avail themselves of Apple’s 30-day return policy or one-year warranty—which remains in effect. Instead, they seek to take an alleged personal grievance about the purported performance of a popular product and turn it into a nationwide class action under California’s consumer protection statutes. The Complaint does not come close to meeting the heavy burden necessary to sustain such claims” Apple Motion to Dismiss

In addition Apple’s lawyers point to the ‘beta’ branding and that the apparent failure of Siri on specific issues were never promised.

Latest research from ABI Research shows that the majority of users spend little to nothing on mobile apps, with more than 70% of users spending less than $7.50 per month. The research also found that the top 3% of spenders accounted for nearly 20% of all revenue generated.

“The median amount among the consumers who spend money on apps is much lower than the average, just $7.50 per month,” senior analyst Aapo Markkanen said. “This reflects the disproportionate role of big spenders as a revenue source.”

The research also found that the apps that generated the most revenue were often utility apps targetted at business professionals or iOS games with in-app purchases, as Apple discovered.

Whilst the research concerns the US market, it can be applied to app revenue generation globally and although not accurate, it can provide an indication of app revenues worldwide.

Here’s the full press release.

3% of Users Account for One-Fifth of All Money Spent on Mobile Apps

LONDON – May 14, 2012
?According to a US consumer survey conducted by ABI Research, about two-thirds of app users have spent money on an application on at least one occasion. Among these paying users, the mean spend was $14 per month. Behind the seemingly high average amount there are, however, some striking findings.

Senior analyst Aapo Markkanen explains, “The median amount among the consumers who spend money on apps is much lower than the average, just $7.50 per month. This reflects the disproportionate role of big spenders as a revenue source. The highest-spending 3% of all app users account for nearly 20% of the total spend, while over 70% spends either nothing or very little.”

The numbers also reflect certain trends in different app categories. Thus far, the releases that have best succeeded in making money have typically been utility apps often used for business purposes, or iOS games monetized through strings of in-app purchases. In both cases the money comes from a remarkably small base of customers. Is there anything developers can do to boost the conversion rate from free to premium?

Markkanen has two recommendations. “First, don’t get obsessed by mobile and apps, but remember also the web,” he adds. “Most of the successful app concepts either support, or are supported by, a web component. Second, see your product through a long-term lens, asking yourself what could convince your customers to still engage with the app in two years’ time. Evernote, for example, has excelled at both. It has skillfully combined the web and the mobile, and at the same time it has also managed to become a habit for many of its users. It demonstrates that the longer its customers stick around with a free version of an app, the likelier they’re going to convert to its premium version.”

The world’s largest mobile network by subscribers, China Mobile, announced today that it was in talks with Apple to bring Apple’s immensely popular iPhone to the Chinese telecoms carrier.

China Mobile is the only Chinese network not to carry the iPhone as the 3G frequency being used by the network is not currently supported by Apple’s iPhone.

“We’ve been actively talking to Apple on how we can cooperate,” China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua, who assumed the post in March, told a shareholders meeting. “I can’t give you too many details, but I’d like to repeat that both sides do hope to boost our cooperation,” Xi added after the meeting.

Xi also revealed that China Mobile has an ambitious global expansion plan, that could see it offer mobile services in the USA. China Mobile also said that the number of subscribers grew to 667.20 million in March, which is more than twice the entire population of the USA and Xi said:

“We want to become a more global company. For that to happen, we are interested in tapping other markets such as Hong Kong and the United States,” Xi said.

“We have applied to the United States for a license, but it’s not been rejected yet. Rather, it’s undergoing the relevant procedure. We hope the U.S. government will give us their approval soon for us to expand our services there.”

Last year Apple filed a law-suit against some HTC phones, now it seems to carry out.

Earlier today i heard that the HTC One X and the HTC Evo 4G LTE are being delayed in the US because of Apple’s law-suit angainst them in December 2011, where apple claimed HTC would use some of their patents in those Adroid based devices .

HTC confirmed those rumors earlier today as i quote : ”The U.S. availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order,”

“We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval.”

Last Year Apple stated infront of the ITC that HTC infrigned their patents of Data detection, the ITC ruled in Apple’s favour, and now it seems they stopped the import of HTC devices.

Traditionally Google has only launched one Nexus branded handset per year, following the lead of Apple, but that could be set to change according to the Wall Street Journal. WSJ report that Google is planning a much bigger roll out of Nexus branded handsets this year with up to 5 manufacturers, including Motorola who are being purchased by Google, all launching Nexus branded stock Android smartphones.

Why is Google planning this? To ease growing unrest over the company’s planned acquisition of Motorola which Google partners believe could give the company unfair favouritism. Google is also hoping that the launch of a range of Nexus branded stock Android devices would mean that the hardware OEMs differentiate against each other based purely on hardware, and not the current hardware/UI differentiation status quo.

Google is also hoping that offering multiple manufacturers early access to the latest Android build will represent faster updates for non-Nexus devices and the WSJ also comments that Google could look to enforce the pure Android platform on all Android devices as the use of custom UIs often leads to slower updates and a poorer experience.

Google’s plan of attack isn’t exclusive to mobile smartphones either as the company could use the same concept to relaunch Android tablets. The new Nexus branded handsets would be sold directly through Google’s online store, network-free, unlocked and at a full price.

Apple could be planning an iCloud-based photo sharing community, with users able to comment on cloud-stored photos; is Apple set to take on Instagram and Facebook?

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple could be set to move into a new cloud-based era, with new services and features planned for its iCloud service. One of these features is said to be a new photo sharing service.

One of the best and potentially most lucrative aspects of the new service for the company is the ability to add comments to images stored in the cloud. This would open up a whole new community for Apple, allowing them to take on the likes of Instagram (and Facebook who purchased them), where users comment on pictures.

Other potential services in the update to iCloud, which is expected to land at WWDC in June, could include an update to personal syncing, with videos, notes and reminders all set to sync across multiple devices. Apple is expected to unveil all at WWDC in just a few weeks, where the company will also unveil the latest version of their mobile OS, iOS 6.

Rafe from All About Windows Phone has established that there are now 90,000 apps available on the Windows Phone Marketplace, meaning the platform is growing at an incredible rate having recently crossed the 70,000 apps milestone less than two months ago.

The numbers pale in comparison to Apple’s App Store (around 600,000) and the Google Play Store (500,000) but given the platform is only around a year old, 90k is a good milestone for Microsoft (and Nokia) to have reached.

As we all know, once you get to that number of apps, it’s less about quantity and more about quality. That being said, it’s definitely great to see Nokia’s adopted platform become appealing to developers.

The Sony Xperia S27i has been leaked by its user agent profile on Sony’s website, bringing some details about the as-yet unannounced device. The Xperia S27i, codenamed ‘Lotus’ is expected to be the successor to Sony’s Xperia Active smartphone.

We’re expecting the S27i Lotus to feature a rugged profile, possibly waterproof and/or dustproof, as well as a WVGA resolution display and 1GHz dual-core ST-Ericsson NovaThor U8500 processor. The user agent shows the device running the Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform, and like the 2011 Xperia range, we’d expect this to get an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich either by launch or post-launch.

Our friends over at Mobilefun have uploaded some hands on videos showing off the official flip cover, holder and battery charger, C-pen and WiFi Display Hub. MobileFun have long been a favourite place of mine to pick up a massive array of accessories that you probably won’t find elsewhere.
Back at CES 2012, Sony unveiled the Xperia S which was their first own branded device. Featuring a sleek design, excellent camera and amazing style, the device had everything but the latest version of Android.

Users of Sony’s flagship 2012 smartphone had been told that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update would be coming “in the future” but without any concrete dates and now it’s been leaked the update will come by the end of May/early June. The release date comes via one of Sony’s support staff who wrote on their forums that the official Android 4.0 update for the Xperia S would land in that timescale.
