Updated: BlackBerry Z10: How to transfer data from old BlackBerry

by Nirave3 February 2013

The BlackBerry Z10 runs on the BlackBerry 10 Operating System and uses the new BlackBerry Link desktop software. BlackBerry Link doesn’t work with devices running BlackBerry OS 7 or older, such as the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Torch 9860.

BlackBerry’s desktop software has always been able to move all your BlackBerry data to your new BlackBerry using the Device Switch application. As we’ve mentioned, BlackBerry Link doesn’t support older devices which means the software doesn’t work in the same way.

Here’s how to copy the data from your old BlackBerry to the new BlackBerry Z10 or BlackBerry Q10.

Update (10/02/13): We’ve been informed by BlackBerry that there are known issues with contacts and media transferring using the BlackBerry Link software. Aside from contacts and media, using BlackBerry Link for the Device Switch will still transfer the rest of your data. To transfer contacts, take a look at our Bluetooth contacts transfer guide.

In this guide, we’ve use BlackBerry Link for Mac – the Windows version is very similar and this guide should still be accurate – if you notice something that isn’t accurate, please let us know in the comments and we’ll update this windows instructions as well.

Step 1: Download BlackBerry Link for BlackBerry Z10

The first step is to download the BlackBerry Link software for your PC or Mac. Visit this link: and click on either Download for PC or Download for Mac.

Once the download is complete, click on the file and follow the onscreen instructions to install the application. Once installed, follow the steps below.

Step 2: Transferring your data: Your Old BlackBerry

Connect your old BlackBerry to your computer and open BlackBerry Link. Once the software recognises your phone, select the device in the tabs at the bottom of the screen. You’ll then be presented with a screen that says:

From this screen, select Transfer Device Data and then you’ll see this screen:

Click Next at the bottom of the screen and then the software will backup your device.

Step 3: Transferring your data to BlackBerry 10

Once the backup of your old device is completed, you’ll be asked to connect your new BlackBerry 10 device. Using the USB cable supplied in the box, connect your BlackBerry Z10 (or other BB10 device) to your computer. Once it recognises the device, select it and then press next. BlackBerry Link will then transfer all the information to your new smartphone – once complete, you’ll also be able to use BlackBerry Link to delete the data on your old device.

We hope this guide helped – if it did, please share the information with your friends and followers using the links below. If you have any questions about BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry Link or the BlackBerry Z10, let us know in the comments below and we’ll do our best to answer them!

Have gone through the process with bb torch, yet no contacts or media transferred to z10.

    • Nirave

Which BB torch is it? Check that your media is saved on your device and not on your memory card. BlackBerry Link won’t copy off of your memory card.

For the contacts, are you wirelessly synchronising? i.e. do your contacts sync with your email account (such as hotmail/gmail)? If so, the contacts won’t transfer and you’ll need to set up the individual accounts on your Z10 to sync your contact list.

It doesn’t work bcoz when I connect BB Bold I get one option which is launching BB desktop software only.

    • Nirave

That is an issue local to your device. We’ve tested this on several old BlackBerry smartphones and all presented the option to transfer data.

Are you on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server with work? If so, it’s likely that the BES server is preventing you from transferring data. It’s worth noting that BES on BlackBerry 10 won’t be available until March/April.
