Sony Xperia P initial impressions

Sony Xperia P initial impressions

by Nirave18 July 2012

Sony’s mid-range Xperia P Android smartphone landed at UKMR HQ a few days back and I’m now going to share with you some of my initial thoughts about Sony’s mid-range Android smartphone, which looks like to take on HTC’s mid-range One S smartphone.

We received the Xperia P in Red and I’ve got to say well done to Sony as the quality of the colour finish is nothing short of outstanding. The red looks metallic and shines bright with no dull parts on the device which is an achievement in itself and something to shout about.

The Xperia P comes equipped with Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA Engine and Reality Display and together they deliver an excellent on-screen experience with deep blacks, rich colours and great colour which is accentuated by the notification bar which also changes colour.

The notification bar will change colour (in the Gallery app) depending on the colours in the picture being displayed and it adds a really cool show-off effect to the device.

A few things have definitely not been great though; firstly, the buttons just feel oddly placed as you have to press them (on the notification bar). Sony really should have placed them in the space just above the bar, which would have been a more logical placement.

Now to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Having reviewed the Xperia S, I knew what to expect software wise but I was still disappointed at having to go from an Android smartphone running Ice Cream Sandwich to one running Gingerbread; it just feels incredibly inferior and the expected update to ICS cannot come sooner for the Xperia P and its users.

Overall, the Xperia P offers a great mid-range experience at a relatively cheap price with great specs and a fantastic display. Android Gingerbread may not be the best platform of the moment, but it still offers a lot of features, which Sony have added to with their Timescape UI.

Here’s a hands-on video we shot at Mobile World Congress earlier this year.

We’ll be posting our full review in the near future so keep an eye out for that and check out the latest Xperia P contract deals below.
