How to: Set up push email on Nokia N900

| December 17, 2009 | 24 Comments

n900Here comes the first of our (hopefully) many How To: tutorials. Actually its the second after our N97mini hard reset tutorial.

It took me about half an hour to work out how to properly configure the Nokia N900 to get push emails working and this is what I’ve found is the simplest way:

Part 1: Sign up for Nokia Messaging (if you already use Nokia Messaging go to Part 2)

Part 2: Set up Nokia Messaging on the N900

  • Go to Menu > Email.
  • Click Next.
  • Click on Service Provider and select Nokia Messaging and press done.
  • Click Next.
  • Enter your account details (the first email address you added to your Nokia Messaging account – the same details you should use here) and click next.
  • Once it acquires all your settings & email info it will go to the homescreen and show Nokia Messaging. (If you’ve set up more than one email address, they will all show when you click on Nokia Messaging).
  • You’re Done :D

I hope this has helped!

If you require any other help, feel free to @reply me on twitter: @nirave or leave a comment here!

P.S. You can leave the email app closed (not even running in the background) and it should deliver emails fine :D

i cant find nokia messenging under the service provider, i signed up and they sent me a download link however when i try to open this link it says it didnt auto detect the symbian op system. any help?? thanks, oh and how do i synchronise my contacts from hotmail?

    • Nirave says:

I have attached screenshots to the above post in order to show how to do it. Where it says service provider, click on the option there and Nokia Messaging is there.

Don’t use the link they provide as it doesn’t work for Maemo.

I am not sure regarding synchronising hotmail contacts, I will have a look and come back with a post if I find anything.

Happy New Year from all @ Mobile Users.

Just followed the steps, very easy. I received an email saying it is a trial. Is this not a free service? I read it was, but did it change in the last few days?

    Hi,

well when it comes to configuring nokia messagin in N900 i am not getting Nokia Messaging in the list of service providers. I use nokia messaging easily on my nokia 5230 and 97mini but somehow it doesnt show the option in N900. On checking talk.maemo forums i found out many ppl are facing this issue. I tried everything from changing sim to reboots nothing works, I am using the latest firmware and messaging is also supported in my region. Any idea how do i get my phone to list Nokia Messaging?

    • Dizi says:

hey, i can assume that you’ve downloaded from the ‘extra-testin’ and from the ‘extra-devel’ some applications, you have to flash youre device, search for ‘flash n900′ at google, look for the maemo.talk result, follow the instructions there, you are hopefuly all-set.

    Hi Nirave,

We’re using MS Exchange 2003 server but have no static IP address. What would be the simplest way to set an N900 up?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer

It just doesn’t work for me. It doesn’t push email. Unless I select auto-connect and I’m manually connected (because It doesn’t auto connect) It doesn’t download email. Is the same sh*t that to use email accounts on the phone. I’m about to drop this phone….

    Hi,

I managed to get it work after digging up an old T-Mobile UK simcard and then wen to email and account setup selected United Kingdom then other and scrolled down for Nokia Messaging and it was there so i selected it and put in my nokia email details and it connected through wifi and downloaded all my email accounts and emails to my fone. I let it complete then switched off my fone and put back my normal simcard back in and started email and nokia messaging was there with all the email accounts i had set up. thanx..

    Hi,

I have to say that Nokia Messaging sucks big time on N900. I was using it on my E71 up to a few days ago with no problem but I haven’t been able to set it up on N900 for past few days. Initially I couldn’t even get connected to Nokia servers using my account details but apparently there were some problems with Nokia Messaging a few days ago so no complaints about the phone here.

Since that started working I can finish the whole set up process and I have my Nokia Messaging account available but it doesn’t sync with Nokia servers (even though it prompts for my password every now and then) and my e-mail accounts linked with Nokia Messaging are not available. If I try to add a mailbox for Nokia Messaging it just ads a normal account in general e-mail. So I tried to set up a new account on Nokia web page but when I select N900 it gives the message “Your mobile phone already has the latest Nokia Messaging software installed.” After that I thought that I’d give it a go with a different e-mail that is not linked with my Nokia Messaging account. Still no luck – it just adds a normal, extra e-mail account.

I know that some of you managed to make it work so does anyone know what I’m doing wrong? My account is definitely working as I can log in to Nokia Messaging on the web and it was working fine up to a few days ago on my E71. I’m running Maemo 10.2010.19-1 (global version, not country specific though) Also, not sure if that’s important as it’s an automatic setting but the server name in the account settings is: em1x-236.lhr.messaging.nokia.com

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hey,
I already setup a nokia messagin account on the website and added two email accounts. Now when I add the Nokia Messaging account to my N900 I don’t see any of the email accounts under the Nokia Messaging section.

I also tried to add a email account from inside the Nokia Messaging settings, but the account is added a independent one and not as a sub-account of Nokia Messaging.

Have you come accross any such issue?

    Thanks,
    -Debjit

Ok, this is my problem now…
I managed to do that last year when I bought the phone. I send it back due to repairs and Nokia send me a new one
I tried to do this again, everything shows up BUT none of the emails work…why? no idea
    Thanks in advance

I tried following the steps on your page “How to: Set up push email on Nokia N900″, but seem to be unable to activate “Push Email”.
While registering, I get a message that my cellular telephone number is not valid.
When I click on the N900 graphic, I get a message saying my phone is already equipped with the necessary software, and to set up the account from my N900.
When I complete that, it does not ask anywhere for my phone number – how can it Push email?

Thanks for getting back to me!!

    John
